Rome IATA airport codes: FCO, CIA and ROM explained
Rome is served by more than one passenger airport. FCO identifies Rome Fiumicino, CIA identifies Rome Ciampino, and ROM is the Rome metropolitan code used in travel and reservation systems.
What is the Rome IATA airport code?
Rome does not have one airport-specific IATA code covering every passenger flight. The city’s two main passenger airports are coded separately: FCO for Rome Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” Airport and CIA for Rome Ciampino “Giovan Battista Pastine” Airport.
ROM is a metropolitan code. IATA’s coding system allows cities served by multiple airports to use a city or metropolitan identifier in reservation and fare systems. For Rome, ROM groups the city search while the physical flight still operates from an airport such as FCO or CIA.
Airport live checks & travel tools
Use current local conditions, official live-status links and planning calculators before you travel. Airline gate, terminal and flight times can change; your carrier remains the final source for flight-specific details.
Live flight center
Check the airport's official flight board, then confirm any last-minute gate or timing change with the airline.
Current airport-area weather
Useful for planning your trip to the airport. This is model-based local weather, not an aviation METAR or an airline operational forecast.
Quick official checks
Open the source that matches the decision you are making right now.
When should I reach the airport?
A planning estimate based on flight type and common time buffers. Always increase the buffer for severe weather, major holidays, unusual airport alerts or airline instructions.
Connection-risk checker
This is a planning heuristic, not an airline minimum-connection-time rule. International arrivals that require U.S. entry processing, baggage claim and security can need substantially more time.
Parking cost estimator
Uses the airport-specific rates stored in this article's configuration. Rates can change; verify availability and final pricing on the official parking page before driving in.
Passenger pickup readiness
Landing time is not curb-ready time. Add time for taxiing, deplaning, baggage claim, customs when applicable and walking to the correct pickup zone.
FCO vs CIA vs ROM: what each Rome code means
| Code | Type | What it identifies | Traveler use | Main mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FCO | IATA airport code | Rome Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” Airport | Tickets, baggage tags, train, taxi, terminal and parking plans | Assuming every Rome flight uses FCO |
| CIA | IATA airport code | Rome Ciampino “G.B. Pastine” Airport | Flights, bus, taxi, pickup and parking | Booking an FCO transfer for a CIA flight |
| ROM | Metropolitan / city code | Rome broadly in reservation and travel systems | Searching multiple Rome-area airport options | Treating ROM as a terminal or airport |
| LIRF | ICAO code | Rome Fiumicino | Operational aviation contexts | Using LIRF instead of FCO for normal passenger planning |
| LIRA | ICAO code | Rome Ciampino | Operational aviation contexts | Using LIRA instead of CIA in travel reservations |

FCO: Rome’s main international airport
FCO is Rome Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” Airport. It serves Rome but is physically located in the municipality of Fiumicino, west of central Rome near the Tyrrhenian coast.
Current Aeroporti di Roma airport mapping shows Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 as the two main passenger terminals. Older search results mentioning active passenger Terminals 2 or 5 can therefore be misleading for current trip planning.
Terminal 1
Used by a current mix of domestic, Schengen and selected international services. Airline assignment—not destination type alone—should determine where you check in.
Terminal 3
Handles domestic, Schengen and non-Schengen services, including many long-haul flights. Always confirm the live terminal before leaving.
Boarding areas
Areas such as A and E are boarding zones after the terminal process. They should not be confused with road-access passenger terminals.
CIA: Rome Ciampino airport travel essentials
CIA identifies Rome Ciampino “Giovan Battista Pastine” Airport, around 15 km from central Rome. It is a separate airport from Fiumicino and is commonly associated with short-haul and low-cost passenger traffic.
Current airport regulations publish normal terminal operating windows of approximately 03:00–23:00 for Departures and 06:00–24:00 for Arrivals. Departures-terminal access during normal night closure is restricted to passengers holding a valid ticket for a flight within the next 24 hours.
Departures
Published terminal opening starts at 03:00, although seasonal operational adjustments are possible.
Arrivals
The Arrivals terminal is published as operating until midnight and closed from 00:00 to 06:00.
Commercial night restriction
ADR states that scheduled commercial take-offs and landings are normally restricted during the 23:00–06:00 night period, subject to specified exemptions.
How to get from Rome airports to the city
Fiumicino and Ciampino require different transport planning. FCO has an airport railway station connected directly to the passenger-terminal complex. CIA does not have an equivalent rail station inside the airport terminal.
Leonardo Express: FCO → Roma Termini
The Leonardo Express is Trenitalia’s non-stop airport train between Fiumicino Airport and Roma Termini.
- Journey: about 32 minutes
- Frequency: scheduled roughly every 15 minutes
- Current single fare: €14
- Children: specific free-travel rules apply when accompanied by a paying adult
- Luggage: Trenitalia states there is no luggage surcharge on Leonardo Express
Integrated Rome Metrebus tickets are not valid on Leonardo Express.
FL1 regional train
FL1 is useful when Roma Termini is not your destination. It serves important Rome stations including Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina.
Trenitalia currently describes service at about every 15 minutes on working days and every 30 minutes on Sundays and public holidays. Verify your exact train because engineering work can temporarily alter schedules.
Ciampino airport buses
ADR lists daily bus services from Ciampino Airport toward Roma Termini and other connection points. Bus stops are opposite International Departures.
Operators currently listed by ADR include SIT, Terravision and RomeAirportBus/Schiaffini, while other services connect toward Ciampino railway station or Anagnina.
Ciampino rail connection
There is no railway platform inside the CIA passenger terminal. A traveler using rail must connect between the airport and an external rail or metro point such as Ciampino station or Anagnina, depending on the selected service.
Rome airport taxi fares: verified fixed-price routes
Roma Capitale’s current taxi tariff publishes predetermined fares for several airport journeys. These fixed fares apply to eligible direct journeys and include normal supplements except the published supplement that may apply from the fifth passenger onward in a suitably sized vehicle.
| Route | Current fixed fare | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| FCO ↔ inside Aurelian Walls | €55 | Direct eligible journey between Fiumicino and the central Rome zone defined by the tariff. |
| CIA ↔ inside Aurelian Walls | €40 | Direct eligible journey between Ciampino and the defined central zone. |
| FCO ↔ CIA | €55 | Useful benchmark for direct airport-to-airport taxi transfer. |
| FCO ↔ Tiburtina | €60 | Predetermined direct fare. |
| FCO ↔ Ostiense | €50 | Predetermined direct fare. |
| CIA ↔ Tiburtina | €40 | Predetermined direct fare. |
| CIA ↔ Ostiense | €40 | Predetermined direct fare. |
| FCO ↔ Civitavecchia Port | €130 | Relevant for cruise passengers; allow a large flight-to-port buffer. |
Changing between Rome airports is not a terminal connection
If one flight uses FCO and another uses CIA, you are making an airport-to-airport ground transfer. There is no airside corridor that allows you to remain inside one airport system.
Confirm both airport codes
Look at each flight segment individually. ROM on a search page is not enough.
Complete arrival formalities
Depending on origin and itinerary, this can include border control, baggage claim and customs before you can leave the first airport.
Travel across the Rome area
Road time is variable. The official taxi tariff currently lists €55 for a direct eligible FCO–CIA journey.
Start the second airport process
You may need to check in again, hand over baggage and pass security at the departure airport.
Fast Track, screening and airport arrival planning
Airport security is only one part of the departure process. Airline check-in, baggage acceptance, document checks and—on some routes—border control can add time before boarding.
ADR Fast Track
The current ADR booking system displays Fast Track at €10.
Fiumicino Fast Track
ADR currently publishes guaranteed Fast Track operation for Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 from 05:00 to 23:00.
Ciampino Fast Track
ADR currently publishes guaranteed operation at Ciampino Departures from 05:00 to 23:00.
Children aged 0–12 may use Fast Track without the paid charge when accompanying an eligible paying adult or otherwise holding the required voucher under ADR’s current booking conditions.
EES is active; ETIAS is still not accepting applications
The EU Entry/Exit System, or EES, is fully operational at participating European external borders from April 10, 2026. It applies to many non-EU nationals making short stays and electronically records entry/exit information and relevant biometric data, subject to exemptions.
ETIAS is different. As checked in September 2026, the official EU information states that ETIAS is not yet in operation and no travel-authorisation applications are currently being collected.
Entry/Exit System
Fully operational. Travelers in scope should allow for the applicable external-border procedure, particularly when first registering in the system.
Not live yet
Do not pay a third-party website for an ETIAS authorization while the official EU service says applications are not being collected.
Parking at FCO and CIA: select the airport before paying
ADR Mobility operates airport parking products for both Fiumicino and Ciampino. Current booking prices can vary by airport, parking product, date, stay length and promotion, so a static “daily price” can become misleading quickly.
Fiumicino parking
Select Fiumicino before choosing a parking product. Consider terminal location, luggage and transfer time rather than price alone.
Ciampino parking
A Ciampino reservation is airport-specific. Recheck CIA before payment if a flight search originally displayed only “Rome.”
Reduced-mobility and special assistance
ADR Assistance supports passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility at the Rome airports. The most important step is to request assistance through the airline or tour operator when booking and ideally at least 48 hours before the scheduled flight.
The airport assistance system then supports eligible passengers through the applicable airport process. Assistance points and accessible routes exist at Fiumicino and Ciampino, but airline-specific needs such as boarding support, aircraft seating and mobility-device handling should still be attached to the flight booking.
Request ahead
Give the airline advance notice so the airport assistance provider receives the service request.
Tell the airline
Airport assistance does not replace airline notification for wheelchair, boarding or aircraft-specific requirements.
Allow extra time
Do not assume the minimum normal check-in routine will cover assistance, mobility-device or escort processes.
Lost baggage is not the same as lost property
The correct contact depends on what went missing and where. A checked suitcase that did not arrive is normally handled by the airline or its ground-handling company. An item lost in an airport terminal is handled through airport lost-property procedures.
| Problem | Who to contact first | Useful detail |
|---|---|---|
| Checked bag missing at FCO | Airline / handling company | ADR says the responsible handler is identified on the monitor near the baggage belt. |
| Item lost before or at FCO security | ADR Security Lost & Found | Published phone: +39 06 6595 5253. |
| Item lost after FCO security | Airside Lost & Found | Published phone: +39 06 6595 3313. |
| Item lost at CIA terminal | Ciampino Lost Property | Published phone: +39 06 6595 9327. |
| Item left on aircraft | Airline / handling company | An aircraft item is not treated the same way as an item found in a public terminal area. |
Common Rome airport mistakes and what to do
Your booking says ROM but your transfer says FCO
Open the actual flight segment. ROM is a city-level code. Confirm whether the flight operates from FCO or CIA before keeping the transfer.
You went to the wrong Rome airport
Contact the airline immediately. Check-in and bag-drop deadlines still apply even when the mistake involves two airports serving the same city.
An old page tells you to use FCO Terminal 2 or Terminal 5
Do not follow it without verification. Current ADR mapping identifies Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 as the passenger-terminal structure travelers should check.
You bought a normal Rome public-transport ticket for Leonardo Express
Check the ticket before boarding. Trenitalia states that integrated Metrebus tickets are not valid on Leonardo Express.
Your CIA flight leaves very early
Check the current terminal opening and bus/taxi schedule. Do not assume all public areas or services operate throughout the night.
A website asks you to pay for ETIAS now
Stop and check the official EU site. As of this article’s September 2026 verification, ETIAS is not operational and applications are not being collected.
Your FCO–CIA connection looks short
Recalculate using baggage, border processing, road transfer, check-in and security—not only the taxi driving time.
Your checked bag did not arrive
Use the airline or its ground handler first. Airport lost property is generally for belongings lost in the terminal, not delayed checked baggage.

Official sources used for this Rome airport guide
Stable code information was separated from operational details. IATA and aviation identifiers were checked separately from airport operations, while transport, taxi, border and assistance information was verified against the organization responsible for that service.
Confirm FCO or CIA before you commit money
FCO means Fiumicino, CIA means Ciampino, and ROM is a Rome metropolitan search code. Once you know the physical airport, confirm the operating airline, terminal, live flight status, transport service, airport parking and current entry requirements before leaving.
