Why DCA is mainly short-haul while IAD handles more long-haul flying
Reagan National is not simply a smaller version of Dulles. A federal 1,250-statute-mile perimeter rule generally limits nonstop service at DCA, while specific beyond-perimeter slot exemptions allow selected longer routes. That is one reason a Washington search can show DCA for many domestic trips but IAD for a much broader long-haul and international network.

Think of 1,250 miles as the normal nonstop boundary—not an absolute wall. Congress has authorized limited exceptions beyond it.

Reagan’s printable PDFs are official—but the exposed files contain legacy 2014–2015 information
This is an important source-quality trap. The DCA website still links to an official terminal PDF whose footer says “Information effective 10/14” and a parking PDF marked “Information effective 1/15.” The terminal PDF contains former Terminal A/B/C labels and airline names such as US Airways and Virgin America. The old parking PDF even shows a Cell Phone Waiting Area that the current airport website says is closed.

Blue & Yellow Line Metro
The Reagan National Airport station connects to the airport by covered walkways. It is usually the cleanest no-car choice for central Washington when Metro service fits your schedule.
Uber/Lyft and taxi
Ride-app pickup is on the Arrivals level in designated zones. Taxi loading is also at the baggage-claim curb. Follow current curb signage and the app’s live pickup pin.
Terminal 2 Kiss & Fly
For Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue and United passengers with a boarding pass and no bag to check, follow purple signs to the pull-off between the garages and Metro station. Vehicles cannot wait there.
Rental cars
On-airport rental companies operate from Parking 1, Level 1. The airport describes the walk as roughly 10–15 minutes; shuttle service is also available.

Why travelers choose IAD
IAD is the Washington region’s major long-haul international gateway. The main terminal is connected to midfield gate areas, and the Silver Line provides rail access to the Washington Metro system.

The current Dulles terminal map is genuinely useful because it reflects the modern concourse layout. Read it by decision layer instead of staring at the whole diagram.
Ticketing & security
Airline ticketing/check-in is on the Departures level. East, West and PreCheck screening are shown before the post-security train/gate choices.
Gate transportation
The map shows AeroTrain routing to A, B and C areas and a separate Shuttle to D Gates path—one of the most important details for a tight connection.
Arrivals & ground transport
Baggage claims 1–15, International Arrivals near Baggage 15, taxi at Curb 1, shared/hotel/public transport at Curb 2 and app rides at Curb 3 are mapped on lower levels.
International arrivals at IAD: immigration, bags, customs, recheck and meeting point
For most long-haul international itineraries to Washington, IAD is the airport code you are looking for. The arrival process depends on whether your origin has U.S. preclearance.
Can DCA have international flights?
Yes, but Reagan National has a limited international network. The airport states that immigration and customs screening for its international flights occurs before boarding at the foreign origin. That is why DCA can receive selected flights from U.S. preclearance airports even though Dulles is the region’s main long-haul international gateway.

Non-precleared international arrivals proceed through U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing.
Collect every checked bag
Dulles instructs international passengers to collect all luggage before leaving the CBP facility. Re-entry after exit is not allowed.

IAD supports official CBP Mobile Passport Control for eligible groups. Set up the profile before travel, then submit the trip to CBP after landing; the current Dulles guidance says the receipt is valid for four hours.
Precleared origin
If U.S. CBP inspection happened before departure, arrival may flow through the normal domestic-arrivals path instead of the International Arrivals Building. Tell your pickup driver whether your flight was precleared.
DCA to IAD transfer: there is no dedicated airport shuttle
DCA and IAD are separate airports in Virginia. An itinerary that lands at one and departs from the other is a landside inter-airport transfer, not a normal airside connection.
Metro
IAD Silver Line → Rosslyn → transfer to Blue Line → Reagan National Airport. Reverse the sequence for DCA→IAD. Check WMATA service and elevator notices before relying on a tight connection.
Taxi / rideshare
Door-to-door is simpler with luggage, but roadway conditions in Northern Virginia and Washington can vary widely. Use a current navigation estimate only after you are curb-ready.
Separate-ticket risk
Add baggage collection, airport exit, ground trip, airline bag-drop cutoff, security and boarding. Unless your ticket explicitly protects the airport change, a missed onward flight can become your responsibility.

DCA pickup: no active Cell Phone Lot
The Cell Phone Lot is currently closed. Parking 1 and 2 are free for the first 60 minutes, making them the official waiting alternative before the passenger is curb-ready.
Parking alert: DCA Economy capacity is reduced by about 40% during construction extending into 2026; reserve ahead or consider Metro.
IAD pickup & drop-off shortcuts
The Dulles Cell Phone Lot is free for up to one hour; vehicles must stay attended and there is no restroom. Wait until the passenger gives you the exact door and level. The airport station is connected by covered walkways. From Terminal 1, allow the extra indoor walk to/from the Metro connection.
Silver Line

MARC / Amtrak via airport shuttle
BWI’s free shuttle connects the terminal to BWI Rail Station, where MARC and Amtrak can take travelers toward Washington Union Station. Check both the shuttle and train schedule.

Dulles Concourse E — under construction
The first segment is planned as a 14-gate, 435,000-square-foot concourse with direct AeroTrain access and a dedicated international-arrival pathway. Until a live flight is assigned there, do not treat a rendering as your gate map.
$20B+ Dulles transformation — future phases
On July 29, 2026, MWAA announced a $20+ billion long-term transformation initiative covering more than five million square feet of new or renovated space, new/modernized concourses, expanded AeroTrain and customs facilities. Those future plans do not replace the current June 2026 terminal map today.
