Philadelphia Airport code PHL: identify it, then plan the trip
PHL is Philadelphia International Airport. This guide goes beyond the three-letter code with terminal transfers, SEPTA, parking, security, customs, pickup zones, accessibility, current Philadelphia time and practical trip tools.
Check these official pages before leaving
A static guide can explain what to do, but it cannot safely promise a live gate, open garage, security queue or train arrival. Use these official sources for the part of the trip that can change after this page is published.
What is the Philadelphia airport code?
PHL is the IATA and FAA location code for Philadelphia International Airport. It is the three-letter identifier travelers see on boarding passes, baggage tags, airline apps, airport displays and reservation confirmations. The four-letter ICAO identifier is KPHL, used in aviation systems and flight planning. The airport is in the United States and uses the America/New_York time zone.
Airport live checks & travel tools
Use current local conditions, official live-status links and planning calculators before you travel. Airline gate, terminal and flight times can change; your carrier remains the final source for flight-specific details.
Live flight center
Check the airport's official flight board, then confirm any last-minute gate or timing change with the airline.
Current airport-area weather
Useful for planning your trip to the airport. This is model-based local weather, not an aviation METAR or an airline operational forecast.
Quick official checks
Open the source that matches the decision you are making right now.
When should I reach the airport?
A planning estimate based on flight type and common time buffers. Always increase the buffer for severe weather, major holidays, unusual airport alerts or airline instructions.
Connection-risk checker
This is a planning heuristic, not an airline minimum-connection-time rule. International arrivals that require U.S. entry processing, baggage claim and security can need substantially more time.
Parking cost estimator
Uses the airport-specific rates stored in this article's configuration. Rates can change; verify availability and final pricing on the official parking page before driving in.
Passenger pickup readiness
Landing time is not curb-ready time. Add time for taxiing, deplaning, baggage claim, customs when applicable and walking to the correct pickup zone.
Why is the airport called Philadelphia International?
The airport formally opened as Philadelphia Municipal Airport on June 20, 1940. Later in 1945 it became Philadelphia International Airport after American Overseas Airlines inaugurated transatlantic service. The passenger airport code used today is PHL.
PHL at a glance: terminals, gates, airlines and destinations
These figures are useful for understanding why connections, parking and checkpoint time can vary so much at PHL. Network counts are dated because airline schedules change seasonally.
Build a practical PHL travel plan
Departure-time planner
Calculate a baseline terminal-arrival time. Always obey an earlier airline cutoff.
Connection-risk checker
Useful because all terminals connect airside, but international arrivals and separate tickets change the process.
Parking cost estimator
Uses current published 2026 daily maximums for a quick estimate.
Airport-code checker
Use this when a reservation shows an unfamiliar Philadelphia code.
Philadelphia Airport terminal guide
PHL has seven terminal buildings. Once screened, passengers can walk between all terminals without leaving the secure area. The operating airline and live gate—not a generic “domestic/international” label—should decide where you start.
Terminal A-West
International-focused terminal with Gates A14–A26 and premium lounges. International arrivals use the International Arrivals Hall and CBP processing unless they arrive from a U.S. preclearance airport.
Terminal A-East
Used by American and multiple international carriers. It has a TSA PreCheck-capable checkpoint and connects directly toward Terminal B.
Terminal B
American Airlines domestic operations and easy walking access to the busy B/C Connector food and shopping area.
Terminal C
American Airlines operations. The Terminal C checkpoint is TSA PreCheck only, so standard-screening passengers should use another open checkpoint.
Terminal D
Serves multiple airlines and connects directly with Terminal E; the D/E checkpoint is one of PHL’s key screening areas.
Terminal E
Serves several domestic carriers. Terminal F passengers use the E/F SEPTA station for airport rail service.
Terminal F
Primarily regional American Eagle service. Free airside shuttle stops connect Terminal F with Gate C-16 and Gate A-1.
Which terminal does your airline use at PHL?
PHL’s official airline directory is more useful than a generic terminal list because some carriers use one terminal for ticketing and another for gates or baggage claim. Always confirm the operating carrier and live gate before departure.
| Airline | Published PHL location | Traveler note |
|---|---|---|
| Aer Lingus | A-West | Baggage, gates and ticketing listed together. |
| Aeromexico | A-East | Baggage, gates and ticketing listed together. |
| Air Canada | D | Confirm live gate on travel day. |
| Alaska Airlines | D gates/baggage; E ticketing | Do not walk to D expecting the ticket counter. |
| Allegiant | E | Baggage, gates and ticketing listed together. |
| American Airlines | A-East and B/C | Curbside check-in is listed at B/C ticketing and A-East. |
| American Eagle | F | Regional operation; allow time for the F walk or shuttle. |
| British Airways | A-West | International operation; confirm document/check-in cutoff. |
| Delta | D | Baggage, gates and ticketing listed together. |
| Frontier | E | Verify bag-drop cutoff in the airline app. |
| JetBlue | D gates/baggage; E ticketing | Ticketing and gate terminal differ. |
| Lufthansa / Discover | A-West | International check-in rules apply. |
| Southwest | E | Baggage, gates and ticketing listed together. |
| Sun Country | D gates/baggage; E ticketing | Ticketing and gate terminal differ. |
| United | D | United Club is listed on the C/D walkway. |
Walk or use the Terminal F shuttle?
All terminals are connected after security
PHL allows post-security walking from Terminal A through Terminal F. This is especially useful when a checkpoint near your ticketing area is busy or closed, because a screened passenger can continue to another terminal without being screened again.
Free Terminal F shuttle
Current PHL guidance lists service from Terminal F Gate F-14 to Gate C-16 and Gate A-1. Shuttles at C-16 and A-1 run toward Terminal F. Airport guidance has described roughly 10-minute intervals and a 5–7 minute ride; recheck signs and airline instructions on travel day.
A-West to F is a long walk
PHL has published an approximate 45-minute walk from A-West to Terminal F. A connection that looks close on a terminal list can therefore require a meaningful walking buffer.
PHL security checkpoints, TSA PreCheck and 2026 ID changes
PHL recommends at least two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international departure. During the heavy summer 2026 travel season, airport guidance also told some domestic travelers to allow about 2½–3 hours before boarding. Your airline’s check-in or bag-drop cutoff can be earlier than the time you personally need to clear TSA.
| Checkpoint | Published public hours | PreCheck / important note |
|---|---|---|
| A-West 1 | 3:00 p.m.–5:30 p.m. when operating | PHL homepage lists limited operating days; confirm live. |
| A-West 2 | 5:00 a.m.–10:15 p.m. | Standard screening. |
| A-East | 4:15 a.m.–8:15 p.m. | PreCheck 4:15 a.m.–6:30 p.m. |
| B | 3:30 a.m.–9:15 p.m. | Standard screening. |
| C | 4:15 a.m.–8:00 p.m. | PreCheck only. Standard-screening passengers use another checkpoint. |
| D/E | 3:00 a.m.–11:25 p.m. | PreCheck 3:45 a.m.–8:00 p.m. |
| F | 4:30 a.m.–9:15 p.m. | Operational changes can occur; all gates are accessible from other open checkpoints after screening. |
TSA PreCheck Touchless ID
Eligible PreCheck travelers can opt in through participating airlines and use facial comparison at A-West, A-East, C and D/E. PHL currently lists American, Delta, United, Southwest and Alaska among participating airlines. Carry an acceptable physical ID anyway in case it is requested.
TSA ConfirmID
PHL states that beginning February 1, 2026, travelers who arrive without an acceptable form of ID may have to use TSA ConfirmID and pay a $45 fee. This is not a reason to travel without ID—bring an acceptable document whenever possible.
Any open checkpoint can reach any gate
After screening, PHL’s terminals connect airside. If your nearest checkpoint is closed or Terminal C is unusable because you do not have PreCheck, use another open checkpoint and walk to the gate.
Customs, baggage, biometrics and international connections at PHL
Most passengers arriving from outside the United States without U.S. preclearance enter the federal-inspection process at PHL before they can leave the airport or continue to a domestic connection.
Proceed to CBP inspection
Keep passports and required entry documents accessible. If your departure airport provided U.S. preclearance, the arrival process can differ because federal entry inspection was completed before takeoff.
Collect checked baggage
International connectors normally claim checked bags after passport processing even when the baggage tag displays the final U.S. destination.
Complete customs and recheck bags
After the customs step, follow airline signs for connecting-bag recheck. A separate ticket can require a longer route to the airline’s normal bag-drop counter.
Clear TSA again for an onward flight
PHL’s current visitor guidance confirms that a connecting passenger who leaves the customs area must pass security again to reach the next gate.
Continue airside to any terminal
Once rescreened, all PHL terminals are connected on the secure side; use the live gate rather than the original booking screenshot.
Enhanced Passenger Processing
PHL rolled out CBP Enhanced Passenger Processing in January 2026 for U.S. citizens. Facial comparison can confirm identity at the inspection area; PHL says CBP can operate up to six EPP stations based on passenger load.
You can request standard inspection
PHL’s EPP guidance says travelers who prefer not to use EPP can tell a CBP officer and use the standard inspection process instead.
Biometric international boarding
PHL also uses biometric exit screening at selected A-East and A-West international gates. Treat the airline and CBP instructions at your gate as the current source.
Watch the official PHL customs walkthrough
For an international arrival, this official PHL video is more useful than a generic airport tour because it shows the U.S. arrival and connecting process that can affect your connection time.
SEPTA Airport Line: terminal stations, schedule pattern and payment
Direct rail to Center City
SEPTA’s Airport Line connects PHL directly with Center City in less than 30 minutes under normal conditions. In 2026 SEPTA says trains operate every 30 minutes from about 5 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and weekends.
Which airport station should I use?
Airport platforms serve the major terminals. The common sequence includes Terminal E/F, Terminal C/D, Terminal B and Terminal A-East before Eastwick and Center City. Terminal F passengers use the E/F station. Follow baggage-claim signs for trains rather than walking to a different terminal first.
Contactless payment works on the Airport Line
SEPTA accepts contactless payment across its modes, including Regional Rail and the Airport Line. Because fares and service alerts can change, use the current SEPTA page instead of an old fare image.
Routes 37, 108 and 115 use the airport
PHL also lists SEPTA buses 37, 108 and 115. Ground-transport signage identifies SEPTA bus pickup as Zone 1. These routes serve different areas, so do not board based only on the route number being a “city bus.”
Driving to PHL: I-95 Exit 15 closure and the airport detour
A major road detail missing from many generic airport guides is now important for southbound drivers: PennDOT has closed the I-95 South ramp to Enterprise Avenue/Island Avenue (Exit 15) through 2027 as part of the Girard Point Bridge project.
If you normally use Exit 15
Do not wait until the last mile to discover the ramp is closed. Navigation apps may update dynamically, but saved directions or an old screenshot can still send you toward the unavailable exit.
PennDOT’s published detour
Use Exit 14 Bartram Avenue/Essington Avenue, follow Bartram Avenue, turn left onto Island Avenue, then left onto Enterprise Avenue.
PHL parking rates, Garage C closure, Economy rules and vehicle limits
On-airport parking is managed by the Philadelphia Parking Authority. Garage C is currently closed for upgrades, so the closest open garage to your terminal may fill sooner than expected.
| Time parked | Short-Term ground level | Garage upper levels |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ½ hour | $5 | $5 |
| Up to 1 hour | $7 | $7 |
| Up to 1½ hours | $9 | $9 |
| Up to 2 hours | $12 | $12 |
| Up to 2½ hours | $14 | $14 |
| Up to 3 hours | $17 | $17 |
| Up to 3½ hours | $20 | $20 |
| Up to 4 hours | $28 | $28 |
| Up to 24 hours | $54 | $32 |
Economy Lot
Economy is $18 per 24 hours, includes 4,200 spaces, and is first come, first served unless you use an eligible PHL Reserve option. The entrance is 4400 Island Ave.
Economy shuttle
Complimentary wheelchair-accessible shuttle buses run 24 hours every day, including holidays, and serve all terminals.
Free vehicle help
Economy parking lists jump starts, flat-tire service, lockout help and a lost-vehicle locator. PPA airport parking assistance: 215-683-9842.
EV charging
The Economy Lot has three charging stations capable of charging six vehicles at once. Garage charging availability can be affected by Garage C construction.
Large vehicles
Buses, trailers, semis and vehicles over 9,000 pounds GVW are not permitted in the Economy Lot.
PHL Reserve
PHL’s summer 2026 guidance says eligible parking can be reserved up to one year before travel and cancelled up to two hours before arrival. Check the current product and terms before paying.
Pickup, rideshare, taxi and ground-transport zones at PHL
PHL uses a numbered zone system outside baggage claim. The fastest way to avoid a pickup mistake is to identify the service type first, then follow that zone’s signs rather than asking a driver to meet at an arbitrary terminal door.
| Zone | Service | What the traveler should do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | SEPTA bus | Follow public-transit signs outside baggage claim. |
| 2 | Rental-car shuttles | Use the shuttle for your booked rental company. |
| 3 | Parking courtesy shuttles | Confirm the parking operator before boarding. |
| 4 | Hotel courtesy shuttles | Call the hotel first if pickup is on demand. |
| 5 | Taxicabs | Use the official cabstand/Zone 5. |
| 6 | Limousine / van service | Use the commercial transportation roadway. |
| 7 | Uber, Lyft and ride apps | Exit baggage claim to South Commercial Road and follow Ride App/Zone 7 signs. |
| 8 | Charter bus / couriers | Use Zone 8 rather than the rideshare curb. |
Center City taxi flat rate
PHL publishes a $32 one-way flat rate between the airport and its defined Center City Zone. Airport-to-Center-City trips add $1 for each additional passenger over age 12 after the first. Tips are not included.
Current metered-airport minimum
The Philadelphia Parking Authority increased the minimum fare for a trip starting at an airport cabstand to $13 including the airport egress fee, effective November 1, 2025. Its mileage and waiting increments also increased to $0.30.
Request rideshare after you reach Zone 7
Collect bags, follow Ride App/Zone 7 signs and then match the app’s driver, plate and vehicle. This avoids cancellation while you are still walking through baggage claim.
Cell Phone Waiting Lot
Use the free Cell Phone Waiting Lot while the passenger is still at the gate or baggage carousel. Drivers must remain with the vehicle and should enter the terminal roadway only after the traveler is ready.
Pickup message that actually works
Ask the traveler to text terminal + baggage-claim door/zone + “bags in hand”. A “landed” text is too early for most checked-bag pickups and especially unreliable after an international arrival.
Accessibility, sensory, language and caregiver support at PHL
AccessPHL now centralizes airport accessibility programs. The most important distinction is who provides what: your operating airline handles flight-related wheelchair/boarding assistance; TSA Cares supports the checkpoint; PHL provides airport navigation, accessibility facilities, communication and sensory resources.
Wheelchair and boarding assistance
Request assistance through the operating airline before travel. Specify whether you need curb-to-counter, counter-to-gate, gate-transfer, aircraft-seat or baggage-claim help.
Aira visual interpretation
PHL lists complimentary Aira support for blind and low-vision travelers who need real-time visual interpretation and navigation help.
Aira ASL
Deaf and hard-of-hearing travelers can use PHL’s listed ASL interpretation resource for communication support.
Hidden Disabilities Sunflower
Free Sunflower lanyards are available at airport information counters to discreetly indicate that a traveler may need more time, patience or support.
24/7 Quiet Room
AccessPHL lists a private Quiet Room open 24/7 for passengers who benefit from a lower-stimulation environment.
Language access
PHL lists GLOBO interpretation in more than 250 languages plus “I Speak” language pins worn by multilingual staff.
Travelers age 75+
AccessPHL notes that travelers age 75 and older may qualify for modified TSA screening procedures. Screening decisions remain with TSA.
Companion-care restrooms
Private companion-care restrooms provide additional space for travelers and caregivers. Every PHL restroom is also listed as including a diaper-changing table.
Service-animal relief
PHL’s 2026 visitor guidance lists seven pet/service-animal relief areas ranging from about 250 to 600 square feet. Use the airport map for the closest current location.
What PHL’s Access for All guide recommends by travel stage
PHL’s accessibility archive describes an in-depth 65-page Access for All guide designed for travelers with disabilities who are new to flying or do not fly often. Rather than sending readers straight to a long document, the practical structure is summarized below so you know which part matters to your trip.
Specific needs the official guide is designed to address
| Traveler need | What to pre-plan | Useful PHL resource |
|---|---|---|
| Wheelchair / physical disability | Airline assistance scope, mobility-device handling, accessible parking and connection time. | Airline assistance + AccessPHL elevator/access maps. |
| Blind / low vision | Wayfinding, gate changes and curb-to-gate navigation. | Aira visual interpretation. |
| Deaf / hard of hearing | Announcements, gate changes and communication support. | Aira ASL and visual paging. |
| Autism / sensory needs | Checkpoint expectations, quiet breaks and practice visits. | Quiet Room, short stories, Airport Access Program / Wingmate where appropriate. |
| Hidden / medical condition | Medication, screening accommodations, extra time and discreet support. | Sunflower lanyard + TSA Cares. |
Short visual stories can be easier than a full PDF
PHL says the Access for All program also includes easy-to-read stories covering planning, airport programs, ticketing, security, the secure side, getting to the gate, baggage, service animals, animals on aircraft, wheelchair services, hidden disabilities, physical disabilities, hearing/vision/communication, a PHL self-tour and international travel. For a first-time flyer, using only the story that matches the next step can be less overwhelming than reading the whole guide.
Wingmate Pass, family facilities, food, lounges and overnight planning
Wingmate Pass
A non-ticketed visitor can apply 1–7 days before the visit; same-day applications are not permitted. PHL limits the program to 100 visitors per day. If approved, the digital pass can be used for security entry between 4 a.m. and 9 p.m.; participants must exit by 10 p.m., and a visit is limited to six hours.
Wingmate security rules
Bring the approved digital pass plus REAL ID or passport. Use standard lanes at A-East, A-West, B, D, E or F. Terminal C is not an entry point for Wingmate and TSA PreCheck cannot be used.
Wingmate bag and re-entry rules
PHL limits participants to one personal item. There is no re-entry after exiting security, and international arriving passengers must be met in the designated hall rather than at an international arrival gate.
Food and retail
PHL’s 2026 visitor guide lists more than 160 local and national food, beverage and retail options. Hours vary; use the current directory when “open now” matters.
Lactation and diaper changing
PHL provides lactation facilities across the terminal system, and AccessPHL says every restroom includes a diaper-changing table.
Lounges
PHL’s airline directory lists American lounges, British Airways, Centurion, United and other carrier/card facilities. Access depends on airline, cabin, status, membership or eligible card—not simply the terminal.
Airport Marriott
PHL Fast Facts list the Philadelphia Airport Marriott with 419 rooms. For weather disruption, ask the airline about any accommodation eligibility before making a nonrefundable booking.
Wayfinding kiosks and indoor map
PHL’s newer digital wayfinding units and online map can search gates, restaurants, lounges, stores, art, restrooms and baggage claim. Use them after a gate change instead of retracing the original route.
Overnight reality
Airport operations continue overnight, but airline counters, checkpoints, lounges, restaurants and shops follow separate schedules. A late arrival does not guarantee that a preferred service is still open.
Who handles a lost item at PHL?
| Where item was lost | Contact | What to include |
|---|---|---|
| Aircraft or gate area | Operating airline | Flight, date, seat/gate, item description |
| TSA checkpoint | TSA Lost & Found | Checkpoint, date, time, item details |
| Taxi, bus, rental car or shuttle | Transportation company | Vehicle/company, route, receipt, pickup time |
| Other terminal/public airport area | PHL Lost & Found — 215-937-6888 | Terminal, location, time, distinctive details |
PHL travel-day checklist
- Confirm the ticket says PHL, not another Philadelphia-area airport.
- Check the operating airline and live gate.
- Verify the checkpoint status before an early or late flight.
- Add parking or rental-shuttle time.
- Check Garage C status before driving.
- Review baggage and TSA rules.
- Use Zone 7 only for standard ride-app pickup.
- Use Zone 2 for rental-car shuttles.
- Check SEPTA service alerts before relying on the train.
- Keep medication, documents and valuables in cabin baggage.
- Request wheelchair or accessibility help in advance.
- For international connections, budget for bags, customs and rescreening.

How this Philadelphia Airport guide was checked
This page was refreshed on August 11, 2026 against live search results and current first-party sources from Philadelphia International Airport, FAA, SEPTA, CBP/TSA guidance, PennDOT and the Philadelphia Parking Authority. Operational facts that can change—flight status, checkpoint status, parking availability, airline locations, road work and transit service—are paired with official confirmation links after the explanation.
Official source/PDF audit
The accessibility section incorporates the structure and traveler needs described by PHL’s 65-page Access for All guide landing source, then converts those details into travel-stage H2/H3 guidance rather than hiding them behind a PDF link.
Why official links appear after the answer
Each section first explains what the traveler should do, then links to the agency that controls live operational details. This keeps the page useful even when a gate, parking space, road pattern or checkpoint changes.
