Why is Kansas City airport code MCI instead of KCI?
The airport was originally known as Mid-Continent International Airport. IATA adopted MCI from that name, and the identifier remained after the airport became Kansas City International Airport. The airport also explains that U.S. airport designators do not begin with K, N or W because those letters have reserved uses in U.S. aviation and radio call signs.

Kansas City airport map: one terminal, two concourses
Departures, check-in and bag drop
Follow Departures roadway signs. The official virtual-tour transcript describes four curbside vestibules into the check-in hall. After airline check-in or bag drop, all gates are reached through the centralized security area.
Arrivals, baggage and ground transportation
Arriving passengers descend to baggage claim. Friends/family use the private Arrivals curb; rideshare, rental-car buses, economy buses, taxis, hotel shuttles and public transit use the separate commercial curb across the roadway.
Concourse A
The secure-side entrance opens near the Concourse A amenity node. The official terminal tour identifies an information desk, Quiet Room, business center and Kansas City Air Travel Experience in this side of the terminal.
A–B connector
The official transcript gives the connector length as about 635 feet and documents moving walkways. No train or inter-terminal shuttle is required between A and B.
Concourse B
Concourse B includes another amenity node, the Sensory Room and Delta Sky Club. Airline gate assignments can move, so use the current flight display or airline app rather than a static airline-to-concourse list.
How MCI departures and arrivals work
Departures are on the upper level
- Follow Departures signage on airport roadways.
- Use the curb position shown for your airline.
- Enter the check-in hall for airline counters/kiosks and bag drop.
- Continue to the centralized security checkpoint for all gates.
- After screening, follow signs to Concourse A or B.
Arrivals and baggage claim are on the lower level
- Follow baggage-claim signs from your gate.
- Use the lower Arrivals level for baggage claim.
- Private-car pickup is on the arrivals curb.
- Commercial transportation—including rental-car and economy buses—is across at the commercial curb.
- Confirm the column/door or pickup marker before calling your driver.
MCI security, TSA PreCheck, Touchless ID and CLEAR
MCI changed its security queuing layout in April 2026 after reviewing passenger-flow data. General boarding, TSA PreCheck, TSA Touchless ID and one ADA-accessible lane now enter near the midpoint of the check-in hall; CLEAR entry lanes remain at the two ends of the security queue.
Domestic departure planning
Use the airport/airline recommendation of completing check-in about two hours before a domestic departure as the baseline, then add parking or shuttle time before that target.
International departure planning
Use roughly three hours before an international departure unless your operating airline gives a different or earlier check-in/bag-drop deadline.
ID and program eligibility
PreCheck, Touchless ID and CLEAR each have their own eligibility and enrollment requirements. A short general line does not mean an expedited lane will be open or faster for every traveler.
- Confirm operating airline, flight status and gate.
- Check the airline’s bag-drop/check-in cutoff.
- Use a TSA-accepted ID; REAL ID enforcement is now in effect.
- Add 15–20 minutes for the Economy bus when using Economy Parking.

EV charging
Garage Level 4 Row E has 52 charging spaces plus 4 ADA charging spaces. Surface Lot row B2 has 6 chargers plus 1 ADA space. Economy Lot C has 24 charging spaces. A ChargePoint account is required for airport chargers.
Parking assistance

Economy bus accessibility
Blue parking buses run 24/7 and are wheelchair-accessible with kneeling capability. Board at a covered lot shelter and use the central commercial-curb stop at Arrivals.
Passenger pickup, drop-off and the MCI Cell Phone Waiting Lot
Dropping off a departing passenger
- Use upper-level Departures.
- Follow curb airline signage.
- Unload only while the driver remains with the vehicle.
- Do not wait or park at the curb.
Picking up an arriving passenger
- Track the flight before entering airport roads.
- Wait until baggage is collected.
- Ask the traveler to stand outside on the lower Arrivals curb.
- Use the passenger’s exact column/door marker for the meetup.
Cell Phone Waiting Lot: 50 Bern St
The free waiting lot is only a few minutes from the terminal and includes a public restroom. Current published rules limit waits to 45 minutes and prohibit unattended vehicles.
MCI commercial curb map: where each ride actually picks up
After baggage claim, commercial transportation is across the roadway from the private passenger curb. The most useful detail is the lettered/numbered sign range: tell your group the zone, not only “Arrivals.”
Uber, Lyft and other app-based pickup. The airport specifically tells riders to wait until bags are collected and they are at this curb before requesting.
Blue buses between the terminal and Economy lots.
Gray shuttle to the Consolidated Rental Car Facility at 1 Nassau Circle.

RideKC Route 229, rideshare, taxis and rental cars
RideKC Route 229: public transit to/from MCI
Route 229 Boardwalk–KCI operates seven days a week and connects the airport with Northland stops and the East Village/downtown area. MCI currently lists the regular fare as free. Service is roughly hourly for much of the day—not 24 hours—so early-morning and late-night flights need a backup plan.
KC Streetcar does not run to the airport
The Kansas City Streetcar serves the urban core, not MCI. Airport public-transit trips use Route 229; travelers can connect to other downtown transit after reaching the city.
United Drop and Ride from Overland Park and Lenexa
Checked Aug. 10, 2026: RideKC’s current United Drop and Ride timetable lists direct KCI Terminal trips from Overland Park Convention Center and Lenexa City Center. This service is separate from Route 229 and uses date-specific schedules, so verify your exact travel day before relying on it for a flight.
Uber, Lyft and app-based rides
Collect baggage first, cross to the Arrivals commercial curb and follow purple signs to 2K–2N. Requesting before you reach the curb can cause the vehicle to arrive while you are still inside.
Taxi
Call airport taxi dispatch at 816-243-2345 and give the exact location. The airport currently publishes a base fare of $2.50 plus $2.10 per mile; traffic and waiting can change the final total.
Rental cars
The Consolidated Rental Car Facility is at 1 Nassau Circle, Kansas City, MO 64153. Free gray buses run 24/7 from the Arrivals commercial curb, generally every 5–10 minutes.
Economy parking buses
Free blue buses run 24/7 and normally arrive about every 15–20 minutes. They are wheelchair-accessible with kneeling capability.
Customs, Mobile Passport Control and Global Entry at MCI
MCI has a dedicated federal inspection area for international arrivals. If Kansas City is your first U.S. port of entry, follow CBP instructions before entering the public terminal or continuing to another flight.
Immigration / entry inspection
Keep your passport and required entry documents accessible. CBP currently lists MCI as an airport with biometric entry and exit processing.
Baggage and customs
Follow CBP and airline instructions for checked baggage and customs. If you have an onward flight, do not assume your bag can stay checked through without following the U.S.-entry process.
Onward flight
After federal processing, follow airline instructions for any baggage recheck and security rescreening before returning to the secure concourses.
Mobile Passport Control (MPC) is supported at MCI
CBP’s current MPC list includes Kansas City International. Eligible travelers can prepare a submission up to four hours before landing or after arrival, then follow the designated MPC line with the physical passport. MPC does not replace required passports, ESTA or visas.
Global Entry Enrollment on Arrival
Conditionally approved Global Entry applicants arriving internationally can currently use Enrollment on Arrival at MCI. CBP lists the location as 1 Kansas City Blvd., Suite 30 with published hours of 12:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Bring the passport(s), proof of residency and permanent-resident card when applicable. Hours can change, so confirm before relying on the interview.

Three restroom cores per concourse
Each concourse was designed with three restroom cores: two gender-specific cores and one multi-user all-gender facility.
Nursing and baby-changing
Each restroom core includes a family restroom, nursing room, bottle-refill station and baby-changing table regardless of gender.
Universal-size changing
The multi-user all-gender facility includes additional family restrooms and a family room with a universal-size changing table.
More room for luggage
Stall doors swing outward, and stalls include hooks and shelving—small details that matter when traveling with bags, coats or a caregiver.
Occupancy indicators
Fully enclosed stalls use red/green occupancy indicators, with availability information visible before entering the stall area.
Service-animal relief
The terminal was designed with one post-security service-animal relief room on each concourse, plus other airport-listed relief options for international/public areas.

Free Wi-Fi
Free airport Wi-Fi is available; the airport’s Wi-Fi landing page also provides shortcuts to flight status, maps and terminal information.

Four 24-hour food/retail options
The current concessions page lists four 24-hour options: &Go near Gate 58 post-security plus Aeguna, Costa Coffee vending and another &Go on the Arrivals level outside security.
Premium lounge
A Delta Sky Club operates in the secure terminal. Admission depends on Delta’s current eligibility rules; do not change concourses solely on an old lounge-hours listing.
Military USO
The new terminal includes a USO facility on the arrivals/baggage-claim level for eligible military community members.
Local food and art
The terminal was designed around Kansas City restaurants, retail and public art. Use the official directory for current hours instead of a static business-hours table.
MCI Guest Pass: who can go through security without a flight?
The free MCI Guest Pass lets approved non-ticketed visitors enter public post-security areas—for example to meet a domestic arrival at the gate, spend time with a departing traveler, use restaurants or practice airport navigation.
Apply 1–7 days before the visit
Same-day applications can be accepted when capacity remains. Each visitor, including a minor, needs a separate application; minors must remain with an approved adult.
Use the digital approval
Approved visitors present the pass on a device with acceptable government photo ID. Printed Guest Passes are not accepted.
Go through standard screening
The pass does not provide PreCheck or CLEAR access. Visitors use the general security line and may bring only one personal item such as a purse or laptop bag.

Small MCI details that prevent big travel-day mistakes
One terminal does not mean one gate area
You still need the A or B gate letter. Use the 635-ft connector if your gate is in the other concourse; there is no terminal train.
Baggage claim is downstairs
The public Arrivals level contains the main baggage-claim area; international arrivals have a separate federal-processing/baggage sequence before public exit.
Private curb ≠ rideshare curb
Friends/family use the private Arrivals curb. App rideshare is across the roadway at commercial-curb signs 2K–2N.
Economy bus drops on Arrivals
After the blue bus reaches the lower commercial curb, departing travelers take an elevator, escalator or stairs up to check-in/security.
Late-night food is limited
The current official directory lists four 24-hour options, not an all-night terminal-wide restaurant lineup. Check the directory before walking to a closed concession.
Gate seats are power-friendly
The terminal tour documents USB-A, USB-C and 110V charging at gate seating, plus wireless charging at selected high-top workstations.
