DCA changed its public terminal naming in June 2022. Current airport signage uses Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The airport overview lists 58 passenger gates total: 9 in Terminal 1 and 49 in Terminal 2. Gate-number ranges should not be used to infer the physical gate count because numbering is not always perfectly sequential.

Can you connect between DCA terminals without TSA rescreening?
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are not connected post-security. If your itinerary switches between them, you must leave the secure side, transfer landside and clear TSA again. By contrast, Terminal 2’s B–E gate areas share a connected post-security experience.

Most B/C/D/E gate connections can remain post-security. Still account for walking distance and a gate change.

Metro to DCA: Blue and Yellow Lines, plus the Terminal 1 route
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport station
WMATA’s Blue and Yellow Lines serve the airport station. Terminal 2 has the clearest direct connection through covered/enclosed pedestrian bridges on the concourse level.
Terminal 1: do not assume the train platform is the final step
Current airport seasonal guidance describes pedestrian connections to both terminals, while airport wayfinding also provides a free shuttle option for Terminal 1. With heavy luggage, mobility needs or construction, follow the current station/airport signs rather than an old web diagram. The shuttle system runs 24/7.
Fare and service are dynamic
Metrorail fares depend on trip and time. Use WMATA’s current trip planner for the exact fare, first/last train and any Blue/Yellow Line or elevator disruption instead of a static price table.

Personal vehicles use the outside curb at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 baggage-claim level. The curb is for active loading, not waiting.
No cell lot right now
The Cell Phone Lot is currently closed. Drivers can wait in Parking 1 or 2 free for up to 60 minutes instead of circling the terminal.
Taxi
Terminal 1 taxis use the closest curb after baggage claim. Terminal 2 taxi dispatch is outside baggage claim Level 1 near Doors 5 or 6. Dispatched taxis use meters and accept cash/credit.
Kiss & Fly for Terminal 2 departures
Passengers on Alaska, American, Delta, JetBlue or United with carry-on/boarding pass can follow purple signs to the pull-off between the parking garages and Metro station. Vehicles may not wait.

Parking 1 and Parking 2 trade a higher daily maximum for terminal proximity; Economy is cheaper but shuttle-dependent and currently affected by reduced capacity during construction.

Your reservation works only for the booked product. If you enter the wrong facility by ticket, use the short exit grace and move to the correct one.
The booking terms provide a two-hour early-entry window; extra time beyond the reserved exit is charged at drive-up rates.

FlyReagan’s directions page still exposes two printable PDFs, but they are not equally useful in 2026. The parking PDF reflects the modern Terminal 1/2 naming and is valuable for understanding road/garage relationships. The linked terminal PDF is a legacy artifact whose own footer says its information was effective in October 2014.
Parking PDF: useful for the big picture
The map shows Terminal 1 beside Parking 1, Terminal 2 beside Parking 2, the Metrorail station along Terminal 2, pedestrian connectors with moving sidewalks, EV charging symbols, airport shuttle stops and the physically separate Economy lot.
Printable terminal PDF: legacy 2014 information
The PDF still shows Terminal A/B/C, gates 1–45 and airlines such as US Airways and Virgin America. Those labels conflict with current Terminal 1/2 signage and current gate ranges A1–E59. Do not use it to find a 2026 gate, airline terminal or security checkpoint.
Where rental cars are—and when walking can beat the shuttle
On-airport rental counters
Alamo, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Thrifty and Sixt are listed on airport. Counters are on the first floor of Parking 1. Avis and Budget are listed off-airport.
Walking option
The airport estimates roughly 10–15 minutes to walk from terminals toward the Parking 1 rental-car area. That can be practical with light luggage when shuttle waits are inconvenient.
Rental-car shuttle
Terminal 1 pickup is at the middle curb between Doors 1 and 2; Terminal 2 rental-car shuttles use the first curb near Doors 3 and 8. Follow current signs.
DCA baggage claim, carts, luggage storage and gate-pass help
Missing checked bag
If the bag did not arrive, contact the operating airline. The airline tracks delayed baggage and arranges pickup or delivery. Airport Lost & Found does not trace checked luggage.
Baggage carts
Smarte Carte carts are available in garages, departure curb areas and beside baggage-claim carousels. The airport currently lists the rental price as $5 per cart, payable by cash or card.
No luggage storage
Reagan National’s current FAQ states that baggage-storage service is not available. A long layover therefore requires keeping your bags with you unless your airline accepts them.
Pet pickup
Ask the operating airline where a checked pet will be delivered. The airport notes that many checked pets are hand-delivered to the airline’s baggage office.
Meeting someone at the gate
Non-ticketed gate passes are not guaranteed. The airline may issue one in special circumstances at its discretion; bring valid photo ID and ask the airline.

The airport overview lists 12 baggage claims in Terminal 2. Carousel assignments are dynamic, so follow the arrival display rather than a saved screenshot.

Charging points are distributed through gate areas, restaurants and baggage claim. Look for “power up” signage; a compliant battery bank remains useful during disruptions.
Smoking
Smoking is not an indoor terminal amenity. Airport rules permit it outside terminal buildings at least 10 feet from entrance doors unless signage says otherwise.
Why DCA has fewer long-haul routes than IAD
DCA is designed primarily around short- and medium-haul service. Federal rules generally restrict nonstop flights to destinations within a 1,250-statute-mile perimeter, with congressionally authorized beyond-perimeter exemptions. That is why a city pair that looks obvious on a map may require a connection or use IAD/BWI instead.

Most nonstop routes stay within the 1,250-mile perimeter. Selected beyond-perimeter destinations are authorized by exemption.

Published checkpoint hours begin around 4 a.m. and close in the evening. An open terminal does not guarantee access to the post-security gate area.
