CUN airport code: IATA, ICAO, terminals and traveler information

CUN is the IATA code for Cancún International Airport. The airport’s ICAO identifier is MMUN, and CUN is the main air gateway used by travelers heading to Cancún and much of the Riviera Maya.

Quick answer: use CUN when booking passenger flights, reading boarding passes or checking baggage tags. MMUN is mainly used in aviation and operational systems.

Airport codes are stable, but terminals, gates, airline assignments, immigration procedures, transport availability and construction conditions can change.
Answer first

What is the CUN airport code?

CUN is the three-letter IATA airport code for Cancún International Airport in Quintana Roo, Mexico. It is the code normally shown in passenger flight searches, airline itineraries, boarding passes, airport displays and checked-baggage routing.

The airport’s four-letter ICAO identifier is MMUN. Most leisure and business travelers do not need to type MMUN when booking a normal airline trip.

Location Quintana Roo, Mexico
Transfer-company tip: CUN alone identifies the airport, not the curb or terminal where a driver should meet you. Send the airport code together with your airline, flight number, arrival date and current terminal.
Code meaning

CUN, MMUN and common Cancún code confusion

Different travel and aviation systems can show different identifiers for the same airport. The quickest way to avoid mistakes is to match the code to the task you are completing.

Term Meaning Traveler use What to do
CUN IATA code for Cancún International Airport Flights, tickets, baggage and transfers Use this for normal passenger travel
MMUN ICAO airport identifier Aviation, operational and aeronautical data Do not substitute it for CUN in most booking forms
CAN Not Cancún A different airport code Do not use CAN when booking Cancún
Cancún shuttle code Usually a transfer-company question, not a separate official airport code Hotel or airport transfer booking Provide CUN plus flight and terminal details
Postal code Address field, not an airport identifier Forms and deliveries Use the exact address requested by the company or form
Booking rule: if your itinerary is for Cancún International Airport, the passenger-facing airport identifier should read CUN.
Terminal planning

Cancún Airport terminals: T1, T2, T3 and T4 explained

Cancún has a multi-terminal layout. The terminal matters for check-in, meeting a driver, finding the correct arrivals curb and planning a connection, so do not use the airport code as a substitute for the terminal number.

2026 construction active
Important Terminal 1 update: ASUR’s 2025 reporting originally referred to a July 2026 opening for the rebuilt Terminal 1. In its July 2026 Q2 update, management said it expected the new Terminal 1 to open during the fourth quarter of 2026. Until ASUR or your airline confirms actual passenger operations, do not treat T1 as open merely because an older planned date has passed.
Construction / verify status

Terminal 1

The previous terminal had remained closed while reconstruction and expansion work progressed. The latest verified 2026 management update points to a planned Q4 2026 opening.

Traveler action: do not go to T1 unless your airline or current airport information specifically directs you there.

Passenger terminal

Terminal 2

T2 remains part of the airport’s active passenger complex. ASUR currently lists food, shopping, banking, baggage wrapping and ADO ground transport in or from this terminal.

Traveler action: verify your individual flight rather than relying on a permanent airline list.

Passenger terminal

Terminal 3

T3 supports substantial international passenger activity. ASUR lists restaurants, retail, lounges, communications services and ADO transport here.

Mexico’s INM also lists autonomous immigration filters for eligible arriving passengers in T3.

Passenger terminal

Terminal 4

T4 is another major passenger terminal with restaurants, food courts, duty-free retail, banking/ATM services, lounges and ADO transport listed by ASUR.

INM autonomous immigration filters are also listed in T4 for eligible travelers.

Why no fixed airline-terminal chart here? A static list can age badly when an airline changes terminal or when Terminal 1 opens and traffic is redistributed. For a real trip, the operating airline’s itinerary and ASUR’s current flight information are more useful.
Terminal decision

How to confirm your CUN terminal before leaving

Find the operating airline

A codeshare itinerary can show the marketing airline prominently even when another carrier operates the aircraft. Use the operating carrier for final flight-specific checks.

Check the latest itinerary or airline app

Look for the current airport terminal beside CUN. Do not assume the terminal is unchanged because you previously flew the same route.

Cross-check close to departure

Use ASUR’s airport information and your airline before you start the trip. Construction and operational changes can make an old screenshot unreliable.

Share the terminal with your driver

If someone is collecting you, send the full flight number and terminal instead of simply writing “Cancún Airport.”

Leaving from CUN

CUN departure process: a practical sequence

Your exact departure flow depends on airline, destination, checked baggage and travel documents. This sequence helps you identify the decisions that matter without assuming every traveler follows an identical path.

1

Confirm CUN and the correct terminal

Check the operating airline, scheduled departure and terminal before setting out for the airport.

2

Prepare airline and destination documents

Keep your passport or acceptable travel identification, boarding information and any entry documents required by the country you are flying to accessible.

3

Complete airline check-in and baggage drop

If you have checked bags or need document verification, follow the operating airline’s counter and baggage-drop instructions.

4

Pass airport security

CUN is in Mexico, so Mexican airport-security procedures apply. Do not assume U.S.-specific screening programs determine the process here.

5

Recheck the gate

The airport code and terminal may be correct while the boarding gate still changes. Follow the airline and airport displays after security.

How early should you arrive? Follow the operating airline’s current recommendation for your specific domestic or international flight. This guide does not publish a universal fixed check-in time because airline cutoffs and document requirements differ.
Arriving in Mexico

International arrival process at CUN

An international arrival normally involves immigration processing before you complete the remaining arrival formalities. The exact sequence can vary with terminal, nationality, baggage and instructions given by Mexican authorities.

Follow signs for immigration

Have your passport and relevant entry documentation ready. Travelers eligible for INM’s autonomous filters may see a separate FMA route in Terminals 3 or 4.

Collect checked baggage

Use the carousel assigned to your flight. If a checked bag does not appear or arrives damaged, report it to your airline’s baggage service before leaving the controlled arrivals process whenever possible.

Complete customs requirements

Mexico’s customs rules apply to goods you bring into the country. Declare items when required and ask customs staff when you are unsure rather than guessing.

Enter the public arrivals area

Once you have completed the required arrival formalities, follow the terminal signs to your authorized taxi, ADO service, rental-car arrangement or pre-booked transfer meeting point.

Arrival-area warning: do not assume the first person offering transport is connected with your booking. If you pre-booked a transfer, use the meeting instructions supplied by that provider and verify the passenger name or booking reference before leaving with a driver.
Immigration technology

CUN autonomous immigration filters in Terminals 3 and 4

Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Migración lists Filtros Migratorios Autónomos (FMA) at Cancún Airport Terminals 3 and 4. These are self-service immigration filters, not a universal replacement for the staffed immigration process.

Current basic eligibility

  • An ordinary electronic passport.
  • Passport validity of more than 180 days for FMA use.
  • Age 18 or older.
  • Entry to Mexico exclusively for tourism.
  • No accompanying minor through the FMA process.
  • Nationality included in INM’s current eligible list.

Travelers who may need the traditional process

INM says FMA is not for several non-tourist categories, including certain student, employment, family-unity, humanitarian and Mexican temporary/permanent residence cases, or travelers using diplomatic, official or service passports.

Travelers with minors should use the traditional immigration filters rather than taking the minor through FMA.

Cost: INM states that using the autonomous immigration filters does not have an additional fee and does not require advance registration or membership.
After using FMA

FMA ticket and Forma Migratoria Múltiple Digital

After successful FMA processing, INM says the system provides a ticket containing a QR code and digital entry information. Foreign travelers using this process should keep the ticket and follow the QR route for their digital immigration form.

Keep the FMA ticket

Do not discard it after leaving the immigration area. INM says the ticket may be requested when you leave Mexico.

Scan the QR code

Use a phone camera or compatible QR reader to open the immigration-entry record.

Review and download the FMMD

INM says foreign travelers have up to 90 calendar days from entry to download their Forma Migratoria Múltiple Digital after entering through FMA.

Keep the digital record accessible

Save the file where it can be retrieved during your trip rather than relying only on a browser tab.

Customs

Mexico customs at CUN: baggage and passenger franchise

After international arrival, passengers may need to complete Mexican customs formalities. The National Customs Agency of Mexico distinguishes personal baggage from the separate passenger franchise for additional merchandise.

Current passenger franchise

ANAM’s current Aduana Fácil guidance states that passengers may bring merchandise worth up to US$500, or the equivalent in another currency, under the passenger franchise in addition to qualifying personal baggage.

The rule currently applies regardless of whether the passenger enters Mexico by land, air or sea.

Traveling as a family

ANAM says family members’ franchises can be combined when they arrive in Mexican territory together and by the same means of transportation.

This does not make restricted or regulated goods unrestricted.

Do not use the US$500 amount as permission for every product. Quantity limits, restricted goods, medications, food, plants, animals, cash and other categories can have separate requirements. Use current ANAM guidance or ask customs personnel if your item is unusual.
Travel documents

Passport, visa and Mexico entry checks

Airport-code guidance cannot determine whether a traveler has the right documents to enter Mexico. Entry requirements depend on nationality, passport, visa or residence status, travel purpose and other circumstances.

  • Check that your passport meets the requirements applicable to your trip.
  • Confirm whether your nationality requires a Mexican visa or qualifies under another documented exemption.
  • Carry evidence requested for your travel circumstances rather than relying on an airline booking alone.
  • For FMA use, separately check the stricter INM FMA eligibility rules.
  • Recheck official guidance before departure if your immigration status is unusual or has recently changed.
Ground transportation

Getting from CUN Airport to Cancún and the Riviera Maya

ASUR’s current ground-transport directory lists ADO transport, taxis and car rental among the airport options. Your best choice depends on final destination, group size, luggage and whether you want a fixed pre-booked meeting arrangement.

ADO

ADO bus

ASUR currently lists ADO city transport at Terminals 2, 3 and 4.

Check ADO’s current timetable and destination before travel because departure times are operational information.

TAXI

Airport taxi

ASUR lists taxi service as an airport ground-transport option. Follow the current authorized airport process and confirm the destination and fare arrangement before departure.

CAR

Rental car

Car-rental service is available at the airport. If you book in advance, confirm whether the company uses a counter, meeting point or shuttle arrangement for your terminal.

Pre-booked transfer: save the provider’s meeting instructions before your flight. Send CUN, airline, flight number, scheduled arrival, terminal, lead passenger name and final hotel or destination.
Pickup planning

What to send a CUN shuttle or private-transfer company

Send these details

  • Airport: CUN
  • Operating airline
  • Full flight number
  • Arrival date
  • Scheduled arrival time
  • Current terminal
  • Lead passenger name
  • Hotel, resort or final destination

Avoid these incomplete messages

  • “Cancún Airport” with no flight number
  • “CUN” with no terminal
  • Hotel name with no arrival flight
  • A screenshot taken weeks earlier with no recheck
  • An airline name without specifying the actual flight
Destination planning

CUN to Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Akumal and Tulum

Cancún International Airport is the principal air gateway for Cancún and also serves a large share of travelers continuing south through the Riviera Maya. The airport itself is not the same thing as Cancún’s Hotel Zone, Playa del Carmen or Tulum, so ground transport needs to be planned separately.

CUN → Cancún

Confirm whether you are going to downtown Cancún, the Hotel Zone or another address. “Cancún” alone may be too broad for a driver.

CUN → Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is south of the airport. Check current bus or transfer arrangements rather than assuming a city taxi fare or travel time.

CUN → Akumal

For resort areas between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, use the full resort name and address when reserving transport.

CUN → Tulum area

Do not assume CUN is the only airport that can appear for a Tulum trip. Check the actual airport code on the ticket before booking airport transport.

Airport location

Where is Cancún International Airport?

CUN is in Quintana Roo on Mexico’s Caribbean side. ASUR’s recent corporate reporting places the airport approximately 16 km, or about 10 miles, from the city of Cancún.

Road travel time should not be inferred from distance alone. Traffic, construction, destination within Cancún and the final Riviera Maya location can materially change the journey.

Driving to CUN

Parking and private-car planning

ASUR’s current corporate reporting confirms public automobile parking at its Mexican airports, including the Cancún airport system. Parking is separate from airline terminal information, so drivers should confirm the correct terminal approach and current parking conditions before travel.

Dropping someone off

Get the terminal from the passenger’s current itinerary before entering the airport road system. A CUN booking alone does not tell you which terminal curb to use.

Picking someone up

Wait until the passenger has completed immigration, baggage and customs where applicable. A plane’s landing time is not the same as the time the traveler will reach the public arrivals area.

Parking charges

Do not rely on an old tariff screenshot. Published airport parking tariffs can change, so confirm the current amount before using a price in a travel budget.

Terminal 1 construction

Road and curb planning may evolve as Terminal 1 construction reaches completion. Follow current airport signage instead of an older map.

Inside the airport

Food, shopping, ATMs, baggage services and lounges

ASUR’s current passenger directory shows a substantial range of services across Terminals 2, 3 and 4. Individual businesses and opening hours can change, so use this as a service-category guide rather than a promise that a specific outlet will be open when you arrive.

FOOD

Restaurants and fast food

ASUR lists restaurants, cafés and food-court options across T2, T3 and T4.

SHOP

Duty free and retail

Duty-free, convenience, cosmetics, boutiques, destination shops and other retail categories are listed in the official directory.

ATM

Banking and ATMs

ASUR lists bank and ATM services in the passenger-terminal complex, with locations varying by terminal.

BAG

Baggage wrapping

ASUR lists Secure Wrap services in Terminals 2, 3 and 4.

Passenger lounges

ASUR’s current lounge directory lists Mera lounge locations in T2, T3 and T4, as well as Global Lounge listings. Lounge access is controlled by the lounge or access program, not by this guide.

  • Mera: Terminal 2 Gates A
  • Mera: Terminal 3 near C16
  • Mera: Terminal 4 around Gates 54 and 60

Tourist and communications services

ASUR lists tourist-information and telephone-related services in the active passenger terminals. Locations can be useful if you need local information after clearing arrivals.

Accessibility

Wheelchair and special-assistance planning

If you need wheelchair assistance, boarding support or another passenger-specific accommodation, arrange it with the operating airline before travel and reconfirm it if the itinerary changes.

  • Tell the airline what assistance is needed instead of requesting only “special assistance.”
  • Check that the request appears on the current booking.
  • Confirm the terminal before arranging a separate caregiver, driver or pickup.
  • Allow additional time if mobility makes long terminal movements difficult.
  • Ask the airline who is responsible if assistance does not appear at the expected point.
Why the airline matters: assistance involving check-in, boarding, aircraft access or baggage is closely tied to the operating flight. A general airport article cannot confirm an individual passenger’s service request.
Baggage help

Missing bag vs item lost inside the airport

Checked bag did not arrive

Start with the operating airline’s baggage service because the airline controls the checked-baggage record and tracing process.

Keep the baggage-tag receipt, boarding pass and any baggage report number.

Personal item lost in the terminal

If the item was not checked baggage and you believe it was left in the terminal, use the airport’s current information or contact route for the relevant terminal.

Describe where and approximately when you last had the item.

Do not leave the airport without reporting a missing checked bag if airline staff can take the report there. A later online claim may still be possible, but an airport report creates a clearer record of the problem.
Connecting flights

Connections at CUN: terminal and baggage questions to answer first

Do not plan a connection based only on the fact that both flights use CUN. A workable connection depends on whether you must change terminals, collect and recheck baggage, complete immigration/customs, or obtain a new boarding pass.

Same ticket

Ask the operating airline whether your bag is checked through and whether any terminal change is required. Airline protection and rebooking rules can differ from a self-made connection.

Separate tickets

Treat the transfer more conservatively. You may have to retrieve baggage, complete arrival requirements and check in again with another airline.

  • Check both terminal numbers.
  • Ask where checked bags are tagged to.
  • Confirm whether immigration/customs occurs at CUN.
  • Check the second airline’s check-in and baggage cutoffs.
  • Do not rely on a minimum time from an unrelated itinerary.
Troubleshooting

Common CUN travel problems and what to do

Problem Likely issue What to do
Booking site rejects MMUN You are using the ICAO identifier in a passenger booking field. Search with CUN.
Driver cannot find you The provider has CUN but not the current terminal or flight number. Send airline, full flight number, terminal and passenger name.
Old website says T1 is open It may be using the superseded July 2026 planning date. Use current ASUR/airline information; ASUR later moved the planned opening to Q4 2026.
FMA gate will not apply to you Age, passport, travel purpose, nationality or immigration category may not qualify. Use the staffed immigration process and follow INM instructions.
FMMD not downloaded The FMA ticket QR process has not been completed. Keep the ticket and follow INM’s current FMMD download instructions.
Checked bag missing Airline baggage irregularity. Report it to the operating airline and retain the case number.
Unsure whether goods need declaration Customs rules can depend on product, quantity and value. Check ANAM guidance or ask customs personnel.
Travel-day checklist

What to verify before a CUN trip

  • Your itinerary says CUN, not a different airport code.
  • The operating airline and flight number are correct.
  • You have the current terminal, not an old terminal from a previous trip.
  • Your passport and destination-specific travel documents are ready.
  • If entering Mexico, you have checked current immigration requirements.
  • If planning to use FMA, you meet INM’s current eligibility conditions.
  • Your transfer provider has your terminal and flight number.
  • You know whether checked baggage is through-checked on a connection.
  • You have an offline copy of essential booking and pickup information.
  • You have rechecked flight status before leaving for the airport.
