Washington airport codes decoded: DCA, IAD, WAS and BWI

Washington does not have one passenger airport code that works for every trip. DCA is Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, IAD is Washington Dulles International Airport, and WAS is a metropolitan-area search code rather than a single airport. BWI is a separate Maryland airport that also serves many Washington travelers.

Quick answer: use DCA for Reagan National and IAD for Washington Dulles. If a booking site displays WAS, inspect the actual flight because WAS represents the Washington area, not one terminal or runway.
Independent traveler guide: Airport-Guides.org is not Reagan National Airport, Washington Dulles, BWI Marshall, MWAA, WMATA, TSA, FAA, an airline or a transit operator. Gates, security waits, parking availability, road conditions and transit service can change. Check the responsible official source before same-day travel.

First identify the actual airport, then check live information

A Washington-area search can display several airports. Before checking parking, security or transportation, confirm the three-letter code printed beside the actual flight segment.

The main answer

There is no single Washington airport code

Washington, D.C. is served by multiple airports, so the correct code depends on the actual airport. The FAA currently identifies Reagan National as DCA / KDCA and Washington Dulles as IAD / KIAD.

Code What it identifies ICAO Traveler meaning
DCA Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport KDCA Physical airport in Arlington, Virginia, directly connected to Blue and Yellow Line Metro service.
IAD Washington Dulles International Airport KIAD Physical airport in Northern Virginia with extensive international and long-haul service; Silver Line Metro.
WAS Washington metropolitan-area code — Search/reservation code for the city area, not one airport. Inspect the resulting DCA/IAD/BWI flight.
BWI Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport KBWI Separate airport in Maryland serving Baltimore and the broader Washington region.
Booking trap: never book a hotel shuttle, rental-car return, parking space or pickup using only “Washington airport.” Match the three-letter code on the confirmed ticket.
Reagan National

DCA: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport

DCA is the IATA code for Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Although it primarily serves Washington, D.C., the airport is physically located at 2401 Smith Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia 22202.

METRO

Direct Metrorail access

The Reagan National Metro station is served by the Blue and Yellow Lines. Covered walkways connect the station with the airport.

T1

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 is a separate passenger area. Current MWAA parking information lists airlines including Air Canada, Frontier and Southwest in connection with Terminal 1 parking guidance.

T2

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 handles airlines including American, Alaska, Delta, JetBlue and United under current MWAA parking guidance.

Ride-app pickup

At Terminal 1, current MWAA instructions direct Uber and Lyft passengers to the third outer curb. At Terminal 2, ride-app pickup is on the Baggage Claim/Arrivals Level outer curb, using Zones 1 through 4.

Useful DCA distinction: the airport is physically in Virginia even though “Washington” is part of the airport name. This matters when entering a rideshare, rental-car or hotel-transfer destination.
Washington Dulles

IAD: Washington Dulles International Airport

IAD is the IATA code for Washington Dulles International Airport. The FAA identifier is IAD and the ICAO code is KIAD. WMATA lists the airport at 1 Saarinen Circle, Dulles, Virginia 20166.

SL

Silver Line

The Dulles Airport Metrorail station connects to the main terminal through an indoor pedestrian tunnel with moving sidewalks.

AIR

AeroTrain

AeroTrain moves passengers between parts of the airport after security. Gate location determines whether AeroTrain, walking or a mobile-lounge route is used.

NEW

Airport transformation

IAD is undergoing a major modernization program. Current plans include new and replacement concourses, expanded AeroTrain connections and a larger international-arrivals pathway.

IAD rideshare

Uber and Lyft use the third curb on the ground level outside Baggage Claim. Current Dulles guidance directs passengers through Doors 2, 4 or 6 to numbered pickup zones 3A–3H.

International-flight planning: Dulles advises passengers to arrive about three hours before international departures and about two hours before domestic departures. Airline-specific deadlines can require more time.
Metro-area booking code

What does WAS mean on a Washington flight search?

WAS is not a physical airport. It is used in travel reservation and fare-search contexts to represent the broader Washington metropolitan area.

A search using WAS can therefore produce flights at different airports. Before paying for the ticket, open each itinerary and identify the airport code assigned to the actual flight segment.

1

Search Washington or WAS

Use the metropolitan search only to compare schedules and fares across the region.

2

Open the exact flight

Find DCA, IAD or BWI next to the departure or arrival airport.

3

Book ground travel using that airport

Match parking, Metro, rail, rideshare, rental cars and hotel transportation to the physical airport code rather than WAS.

Never enter “WAS Airport” into a driver or parking reservation. There is no single WAS terminal, runway or airport address.
Regional alternative

BWI: Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport

BWI is a separate airport in Maryland, not another terminal at DCA or IAD. The FAA ICAO identifier is KBWI, and the airport lists its passenger address as 7050 Friendship Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21240.

Washington rail linkMARC / Amtrak

BWI to Washington by rail

BWI’s MARC/Amtrak station is not inside the passenger terminal. The airport operates a free shuttle between the terminal and rail station. Current BWI guidance says the shuttle normally runs about every 10–15 minutes, with less frequent service in the overnight 1 a.m.–5 a.m. period.

Amtrak travelers from Washington use Union Station for trains to BWI’s rail station. MARC service can also connect Washington and the BWI area depending on the operating schedule.

Ride-app pickup

BWI currently directs app-based rideshare pickup to the outer curb of the Departures/Upper Level between Doors 5 and 12.

Ground-time comparison matters: a low airfare at BWI can still produce a longer total trip to Washington if you must add a rail-station shuttle, train wait and onward city transportation.
Getting into Washington

Metro and rail options from DCA, IAD and BWI

The airports do not share one ground-transport system. DCA and IAD have direct Washington Metrorail stations, while BWI uses a separate rail station linked to the airport by shuttle.

Airport Primary rail option Airport connection Important detail
DCA Blue / Yellow Line Metro Covered walkway to airport Station connects directly with Terminal 2 area.
IAD Silver Line Metro Indoor pedestrian tunnel Moving sidewalks connect station and main terminal.
BWI MARC / Amtrak Free airport shuttle Allow time for shuttle transfer between terminal and rail station.
Metro fares and schedules change. Check WMATA immediately before using DCA or IAD rail service, especially for late-night, weekend or maintenance-period trips.
Airport layout

Terminals and gate areas are different at each Washington-area airport

DCA

Terminal 1 + Terminal 2

DCA has two passenger terminals. Check your airline before choosing parking, Metro walking directions or a pickup point.

IAD

Main terminal + gate areas

Dulles uses a main terminal and multiple gate areas, including Z, A, B, C and D. Post-security transportation varies by gate.

BWI

Concourses A–E

BWI’s main terminal connects with Concourses A, B, C, D and E. International-arrival facilities are associated with the E side of the complex.

Do not use the airport code alone to find your gate. The code identifies the airport; your airline and current boarding pass identify the terminal, concourse and gate.
TSA preparation

Security and ID rules at Washington-area airports

DCA, IAD and BWI use TSA passenger screening. As of May 7, 2025, TSA no longer accepts non-REAL-ID-compliant state driver’s licenses or state IDs as standard checkpoint identification. Travelers can instead use another acceptable document such as a passport when applicable.

Check your ID

Verify that your driver’s license is REAL ID compliant or carry another TSA-accepted form of identification.

Use live checkpoint information

Airport checkpoint waits change throughout the day. DCA, IAD and BWI provide current security information through their official airport websites.

Follow airline timing

Airport arrival recommendations do not override an airline’s baggage cutoff, international-document check or boarding deadline.

Driving

Parking differs significantly between DCA, IAD and BWI

All three airports provide official airport parking, but the products and shuttle requirements differ. Do not choose a parking facility until you know the physical airport.

DCA

Parking 1, Parking 2 and Economy

MWAA operates terminal-oriented garages and an economy option. Current DCA guidance includes 24/7 parking shuttle service.

IAD

Terminal, Garage and Economy options

Dulles provides Terminal Parking, Garages 1 and 2 and Economy parking. Reservations are useful during high-demand periods.

BWI

Hourly, Daily, Express and Long Term

BWI currently publishes four main parking categories, with shuttle service from Daily, Express and Long Term facilities.

Do not copy an old parking price into a reservation decision. Availability, advance-booking discounts and standard rates can change. Open the airport’s parking page for your exact dates.
Separate-airport connections

DCA, IAD and BWI are not interchangeable terminals

A ticket that arrives at one Washington-area airport and departs from another creates a ground transfer between separate airports. You may need to collect baggage, leave the airport, travel across the region and complete check-in and TSA screening again.

1

Check whether the airports differ

Look at both flight segments. DCA→IAD, IAD→BWI and BWI→DCA all require an inter-airport ground transfer.

2

Confirm baggage handling

Ask the airlines whether checked baggage must be collected. Separate tickets make through-checking less likely.

3

Calculate door-to-door transfer time

Include baggage reclaim, walking, Metro/train wait, traffic, station transfers and time required to enter the next airport.

4

Add a new security and check-in buffer

Arriving at the second airport is not the same as reaching the gate. Airline cutoff times and TSA screening still apply.

Short connection warning: do not evaluate DCA↔IAD or any BWI transfer using driving time alone. Traffic and public-transport conditions can change substantially.
Troubleshooting

What to do if you go to the wrong Washington airport

1

Confirm the code on the current itinerary

Find DCA, IAD or BWI. Do not rely on the word “Washington.”

2

Contact the operating airline if departure is close

The airline can explain your actual check-in or rebooking options. The airport itself normally cannot change an airline ticket.

3

Recalculate the entire ground journey

Choose Metro, rail, taxi or rideshare based on the two physical airports involved and current traffic or service conditions.

4

Correct related reservations

Parking, rental cars, hotel shuttles and pickup instructions may also be booked for the wrong airport.
