AMS decoded: Amsterdam Schiphol airport guide
AMS is the passenger-facing airport code for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Use this guide to confirm the airport name, country, city and ICAO code, then plan check-in, security, Schengen border control, transfers, trains, taxis, parking and airport services.
Check these official AMS pages before you travel
These cards deliberately open first-party live information instead of displaying stale “live” numbers inside this article.
What airport is AMS?
AMS is the IATA airport code for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the main international airport serving Amsterdam and the Netherlands. AMS is the three-letter identifier passengers see on tickets, boarding passes, baggage tags, flight boards and booking systems.
Airport live checks & travel tools
Use current local conditions, official live-status links and planning calculators before you travel. Airline gate, terminal and flight times can change; your carrier remains the final source for flight-specific details.
Live flight center
Check the airport's official flight board, then confirm any last-minute gate or timing change with the airline.
Current airport-area weather
Useful for planning your trip to the airport. This is model-based local weather, not an aviation METAR or an airline operational forecast.
Quick official checks
Open the source that matches the decision you are making right now.
When should I reach the airport?
A planning estimate based on flight type and common time buffers. Always increase the buffer for severe weather, major holidays, unusual airport alerts or airline instructions.
Connection-risk checker
This is a planning heuristic, not an airline minimum-connection-time rule. International arrivals that require U.S. entry processing, baggage claim and security can need substantially more time.
Parking cost estimator
Uses the airport-specific rates stored in this article's configuration. Rates can change; verify availability and final pricing on the official parking page before driving in.
Passenger pickup readiness
Landing time is not curb-ready time. Add time for taxiing, deplaning, baggage claim, customs when applicable and walking to the correct pickup zone.
The Schiphol airport code for ICAO use is EHAM. EHAM appears in aviation charts, flight plans and operational documents. The Dutch aeronautical information publication identifies the aerodrome as EHAM – AMSTERDAM/SCHIPHOL.
AMS airport code meaning, name, city, country and ICAO code
AMS is the passenger-facing IATA abbreviation for Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. It identifies Amsterdam in airline reservation, ticketing, baggage-routing and flight-information systems. It is not a phrase that passengers need to expand word-by-word; for practical travel, “AMS” means Amsterdam Schiphol.
AMS airport code city and country
The airport serves Amsterdam, Netherlands. The physical airport locality is Schiphol in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, southwest of Amsterdam.
Schiphol airport code ICAO
EHAM is the ICAO location indicator used in aeronautical charts, operational documentation and flight planning. AMS and EHAM refer to the same airport but are used by different systems.
Official AMS airport location
LVNL’s Dutch eAIP places the aerodrome reference point at 52°18′29″N 004°45′51″E, 4.9 nautical miles southwest of Amsterdam, with an elevation of 11 ft below mean sea level.
What does the name “Schiphol” mean?
Schiphol’s official history says the name appears in documents from around 1450. The airport’s preferred explanation links Schip Holl to old words for timber and low-lying land. The popular “ship grave” story is memorable, but Schiphol itself says that is not the true origin.
Schiphol in numbers: why AMS behaves like a major transfer hub
Schiphol’s 2025 Traffic Review is more useful to a traveller when the figures are translated into planning implications. The airport handled 68.8 million passengers in 2025, and 36.6% were transfer passengers. That scale explains why walking distance, live gate checks, border routing and connection buffers matter at AMS.
Schiphol has one terminal — Departures 1, 2 and 3 are not separate airports
Schiphol’s official airport facts describe seven piers in one logistically efficient terminal. Passengers move through different departure halls, lounges and piers, but there is not a separate “Terminal 1,” “Terminal 2” and “Terminal 3” building in the way many U.S. airports use terminal numbers.
| Airport zone | Typical role | Gate / lounge direction | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schiphol Plaza | Public landside area | Train station, bus depot, taxi ranks, arrivals access | Departure hall before heading to check-in |
| Lounge 1 | After security, mainly European/Schengen traffic | Gates B, C and D59–D87 | Passport-control requirement based on destination |
| Lounges 2/3 | After security, intercontinental/non-Schengen traffic | D1–D57, E, F, G, H areas | Gate and border-control route |
| M-gate area | Selected low-cost/European operations | Access can route via Lounge 3 or 4 | Exact M gate and walking route |
How Schiphol’s levels work: Arrivals below, Departures above
Official Schiphol security-layout material separates the passenger complex vertically. Knowing the level is more useful than searching for a nonexistent “Terminal 2 building.”
Baggage reclaim, arrival halls, Schiphol Plaza, access to the underground train station, and routes toward buses/taxis are primarily on the public arrivals level.
Departure halls, check-in, security access, departure lounges and most pier/gate routes are above the arrivals/public transport level.
Some lounges, hotel/service areas and passenger facilities sit on upper floors. Always follow the yellow overhead signs rather than assuming everything is on the main departure level.
Where do I check in at AMS?
Schiphol divides airport check-in into numbered rows. The official guide currently places rows 1–8 in Departures 1, 9–16 in Departures 2 and 17–32 in Departures 3; row 1A is in Departures 1A. The Schiphol app or flight page is the right source for your exact row because airline assignments can move.
Departures 1
Rows 1–8. Current self-service bag-drop users include selected airlines such as KLM, Lufthansa-group carriers, SAS, TAP, Transavia and others.
Departures 2
Rows 9–16. KLM currently uses self-service bag drop here as well as in Departures 1.
Departures 3
Rows 17–32. Current self-service bag-drop users include selected airlines such as American, Cathay Pacific, Corendon, easyJet, Norwegian and TUI.

AMS security: free timeslots, CT scanners and the 100 ml liquids rule
Free 15-minute security timeslot
Book from three days before departure. The reservation gives a dedicated queue and a guaranteed 15-minute arrival window; groups of up to 10 can be included in one booking.
Electronics can generally stay packed
Schiphol’s CT scanners allow permitted liquids and electronics to remain in hand baggage during normal screening. Follow the officer’s instructions if a bag needs additional inspection.
100 ml container limit still applies
Since September 2024, carry-on liquids are limited to containers of no more than 100 ml, subject to medical and baby-food exceptions.
What the security timeslot does — and does not — reserve
| Step | Covered by timeslot? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Airline check-in / bag drop | No | Complete check-in first and respect the airline’s bag-drop closing time. |
| Security queue | Yes | Arrive at the “Reserved for timeslots” lane inside your 15-minute window and scan the QR code. |
| Security screening itself | Normal process | The screening rules do not change; only the queue is planned. |
| Passport control | No | For non-Schengen travel, leave a separate buffer for border control. |
- Search your flight for the current departure hall.
- Check airline check-in and bag-drop opening/closing times.
- Book the free security slot when offered.
- Keep carry-on liquid containers at 100 ml or less.
- Bring an empty bottle and refill after security.
- Monitor screens/app because Schiphol is a silent airport.
Passport control at Schiphol: Schengen vs non-Schengen in 2026
Within the Schengen area
Flights between Schiphol and another Schengen country normally do not require airport border control. You still need the valid passport/identity document required by the airline and destination.
Crossing the Schengen external border
Travellers to or from a non-Schengen country pass passport control performed by the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.
Entry/Exit System (EES) for non-EU short-stay travellers
Schiphol states that the EU Entry/Exit System has been in force since 10 April 2026. Eligible non-EU short-stay travellers are digitally registered when crossing the Schengen external border; passport data and entry/exit dates are recorded, with facial images and fingerprints increasingly included.
eGate eligibility: do not assume “EU only”
Current border-authority rules allow eligible biometric-passport holders aged 14+ to use eGates. Besides EU/Schengen passports, selected non-EU nationalities can be eligible under current EES arrangements. An identity card is not a substitute for a biometric passport at the eGate.
Emergency travel documents
The emergency-document desk is between Departures 1 and 2. Issuance and eligibility are handled by the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, not by Schiphol customer service.
Travelling alone with a child
Check Dutch consent-document guidance plus airline and destination-country requirements before airport day. Keep supporting documents accessible at passport control.
Security vs passport control vs customs: three different checks
Many Schiphol guides use these words interchangeably. The official airport separates them clearly, and knowing the difference prevents wrong assumptions about a connection.
Security checks what goes on the aircraft
Your person and cabin baggage are screened before entering the secure departure area. This applies regardless of whether the destination is Schengen or non-Schengen.
Passport control checks the person crossing the border
The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee performs border control when you cross the Schengen external border. It is not the same thing as security.
Customs checks goods entering the country
Dutch Customs is normally encountered on arrival after baggage reclaim. Use the green channel for nothing to declare and the red channel when goods must be declared.
Connecting at Schiphol: baggage, border control and transfer desks
Schiphol’s one-terminal concept means most connections are made by walking inside the same integrated terminal, but border-control and baggage steps depend on the itinerary.
Check the onward gate
Use airport monitors, your airline or the Schiphol app. Gate changes matter because walking distances can be substantial.
Confirm whether bags are through-checked
On a protected through itinerary, baggage is usually transferred automatically. On two separate tickets, Schiphol warns that baggage may be delivered to reclaim and must be checked in again.
Cross passport control if your zone changes
A Schengen-to-non-Schengen or non-Schengen-to-Schengen connection includes border control. Schengen-to-Schengen connections normally avoid this border step.
Get a boarding pass if you do not have one
Use the relevant transfer desk or airline self-service option. Transfer desks are located at several points including T2, T3, T4, T5, T6 and T9.
Schiphol to Amsterdam: train, bus 397/N97, taxi, Uber or Bolt
Train to Amsterdam Centraal: 14–17 minutes
The NS station is directly below Schiphol Plaza. Schiphol currently publishes up to 8 trains per hour to Amsterdam Centraal and a normal journey of about 14–17 minutes. The airport page currently lists track 3 for the regular Amsterdam connection, but always verify the departure screens because disruptions can change platforms.
Pay with a contactless bank card or phone
For most Dutch public transport, visitors do not need a separate transport card. Tap the same contactless debit/credit card or phone at the yellow reader when you check in and again when you check out. This does not cover every international/special service, so verify when using Eurostar or coach products.
Amsterdam Airport Express 397 and night bus N97
Bus 397 is the direct airport express toward Amsterdam; at night the service is the N97 Niteliner. Current Schiphol guidance lists online single/return tickets from €6.50 and also allows contactless bank-card check-in on the bus. Bus stops are outside Schiphol Plaza.
Official taxi rank
Use the official rank in front of Schiphol Plaza. Official taxis are metered, accept contactless/credit-card payment and provide a printed receipt. Do not accept unsolicited taxi offers inside the terminal.
Uber and Bolt
App taxis use Schiphol’s dedicated App pick-up point, not the ordinary taxi rank. Request after baggage collection, follow the app plus airport signs, and use Schiphol’s free Wi-Fi if mobile service is unreliable.
AMS parking: P1, P3, P6 and P12 compared
Schiphol parking prices and inventory vary by date. This guide focuses on the decision factors that remain useful: walking/shuttle time, vehicle height, charging and whether a reservation is mandatory.
| Official product | Best fit | Terminal access | Charging | Height / reservation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P1 Parking | Close short or longer stay | 2–6 min covered walk | Yes | 2.00 m; reservation advised |
| P1 Pick-up & Drop-off | Meet an arriving passenger | 2–6 min covered walk | Yes | 2.00 m; reservation advised |
| P3 Sheltered | Long stay, covered vehicle | About 5 min by free shuttle | Temporarily unavailable on current comparison | 2.10 m; reservation advised |
| P3 Unsheltered | Long stay / tall vehicle | About 5 min by free shuttle | No | No height restriction; reservation advised |
| P6 Valet | Maximum convenience | About 2 min walk | Yes | 2.00 m; reservation required |
| P12 | Short trip / city break, light luggage | 10–15 min mostly covered walk; no shuttle | Limited | 2.00 m; reservation required |
Vehicle higher than 2 metres?
Use P3 Unsheltered; Schiphol lists no height restriction there. P3 Sheltered allows up to 2.10 m, while P1, P6 and P12 are generally 2.00 m.
P12 accessibility warning
P12 is a walking product with no shuttle, no lift and no toilet. Schiphol explicitly says it is best suited to travellers who can walk well. Choose another facility if you need closer step-free support.
Where should a driver pick someone up at Schiphol?
Picking up
Schiphol recommends P1 Pick-up & Drop-off when meeting an arriving passenger. It is a short covered walk from Schiphol Plaza and the arrival halls, so the driver can park rather than circle the curb.
Dropping off
Kiss & Ride is intended for a very short departure drop-off. For a longer goodbye or when helping with luggage, use P1 instead of waiting at the curb.
Luggage storage, lockers, missing bags and lost items at Schiphol
After-security lockers
Locations: Lounge 1, Lounge 2 and Holland Boulevard. They are listed 24/7, measure about 40 × 40 × 70 cm, allow storage for up to 7 days, and currently cost €8.50 per locker.
Landside Baggage Storage
Level -1 between Arrivals 1 and 2, open 24/7, for larger items or storage up to 30 days. Collect stored baggage before re-entering security.
Current Baggage Storage day rates
| Item | Published daily price | Useful limit |
|---|---|---|
| Hand baggage | €7 per item | Max. 55 × 35 × 25 cm |
| Hold baggage | €9.50 per item | Larger checked-bag size |
| Odd-size baggage | €12 per item | Special/oversize items |
| Wardrobe | €2.50 per item | Clothing storage |
Lost item or missing checked suitcase? Use the right desk
| Problem | First contact | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Checked bag missing from reclaim | Airline / baggage handler | Airline tracing systems handle delayed checked baggage; airport Lost & Found cannot trace it. |
| Loose item left in terminal | Schiphol Lost & Found | Airport loose property is handled through the Schiphol lost-item process. |
| Passport / identity document | Royal Netherlands Marechaussee | Identity documents are transferred to the border-police process. |
Wheelchair, hidden-disability, hearing and vision assistance at AMS
For flight-related PRM assistance, notify the airline or travel agent at least 48 hours before departure where possible. A timely request receives priority; assistance can still be requested later, but waiting may be longer.
27 airport call points
If help is needed before check-in, use a call point. Assistance can collect a passenger from the train station, bus stop, taxi stand or airport car park and guide them to check-in.
Free self-service wheelchairs
Loan wheelchairs are available at several points including departure halls, Schiphol Plaza/train station, bus station and Arrival Hall 3. A loan chair is not the same as guided PRM assistance.
Hidden Disabilities Sunflower
The lanyard signals that someone may need more time, patience or understanding. It does not create automatic priority or replace an assistance request.
Blind or low-vision traveller
Request airline assistance and specify the exact help required. Schiphol is a silent airport, so flight information is primarily on screens; do not rely on general audio announcements.
Deaf or hard-of-hearing traveller
Request assistance if needed and monitor the airline/Schiphol app plus flight-information displays. Schiphol customer contact also lists Teletolk support in Dutch.
Showers, pharmacy, quiet space, family facilities, smoking and overnight help
Free 24/7 showers
Near the EF filter after security, reached by following First Aid signs from Lounge 2/Holland Boulevard. Bring your own towel and toiletries.
24/7 Airport Medical Services pharmacy
Before security: Departures 2 above check-in desks near desk 16/First Aid. After security: Lounge 2. A doctor’s post is next to the pharmacy if a prescription is required.
Meditation Centre
After security in Lounge 2, open 24/7. The interfaith space is useful for prayer, reflection and a quieter break.
Baby Care Lounge
After security on Holland Boulevard between Lounges 2 and 3. Verify eligibility and current hours on the airport map for your route.
Smoke-free terminal
Smoking is prohibited throughout the terminal before and after security and in the parking garages. The official outdoor smoking area is at Jan Dellaertplein.

What is changing at Schiphol in 2026–27?
Schiphol is actively rebuilding passenger infrastructure. These projects matter because an old map, bus-stop screenshot or “Pier A is open” article can send a traveller the wrong way.
Schiphol expects Pier A to enter passenger operation in April 2027. Construction is targeted for completion in December 2026, followed by operational testing and staff training.
The new covered bus station is expected in 2027. During construction, stops can be relocated. Follow live signs rather than an old bay number.
The multimodal-hub project is renewing station access and will add direct stairs between the new bus station and train platforms. Temporary walking routes can change during work.
Watch Schiphol’s official eGate and airport video guidance
Best visual help: passport-control and airport walkthroughs
Schiphol’s official passport page includes an eGate explainer video, and the airport publishes additional travel guidance through its official channels. This is useful for first-time international travellers who want to see the process before arrival.
Why there is no fake embedded VideoObject here: a specific official video URL with independently verified upload date, thumbnail and duration was not exposed reliably in the source audit. Linking the official video-bearing page is more accurate than inventing metadata.
