Pearson began as Malton Airport
Pearson’s own history says the airport opened as Malton Airport on land that had been 13 farmers’ fields. The first landing was an American Airways DC-3 from Buffalo on August 29, 1938. It later became Toronto International Airport and was renamed for Lester B. Pearson.

Toronto Pearson Terminal 1 vs Terminal 3
Pearson has two active passenger terminals. Terminal 2 is not a current passenger terminal. Terminal choice is driven by the operating airline and flight, not simply by whether a trip is domestic or international.
Terminal 1
Air Canada and several Star Alliance/international carriers operate here. The UP Express station is at Terminal 1 beside the Terminal Link station.
Terminal 3
American, British Airways, Air France, Air Transat and multiple other carriers use Terminal 3. To reach UP Express, take Terminal Link to Terminal 1.
What does “IFC” mean on a Pearson gate assignment?
IFC means Infield Concourse. It is a satellite gate facility reached by airport bus from the main terminal. Pearson’s official IFC guidance says the bus journey is about 10 minutes, so an IFC assignment changes your walking/boarding plan even though you still check in and handle normal terminal formalities at Terminal 1 or Terminal 3.
Check in at your main terminal
Use the terminal shown for your flight. Complete airline check-in, baggage and required security/customs steps there before following IFC directions.
Follow the airline to the IFC bus
Pearson directs IFC passengers to a bus bay. Buses run for flights using the concourse; allow the transfer time shown by your airline and airport signs.
Do not postpone essential purchases
The renovated IFC has seating, charging, washrooms, a nursery and some food/retail, but the main terminals offer a wider choice. Get medication, special meals or other essentials before boarding the bus.
How to read Pearson’s Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 maps
Pearson’s downloadable maps separate airport functions by level. That matters because “Terminal 1” or “Terminal 3” alone is not enough to tell a driver, rideshare app or connecting traveller where to go.
T1 GGround Level = ground transportation
The official Terminal 1 ground-level PDF is specifically labelled Ground Transportation. Use this level for services that Pearson assigns to ground transportation rather than assuming the Departures curb is the right pickup point.
T1 L3Level 3 = check-in
The official Terminal 1 Level 3 PDF labels this floor Check-in and shows security gates, lounges, vertical circulation and valet-related access. For departure drop-off, follow the operating airline’s aisle/terminal information rather than an arrivals door.
T3 L1Level 1 = arrivals and baggage claim
The Terminal 3 arrivals PDF shows baggage-claim areas and gate branches on Level 1. An arriving passenger should finish baggage collection, then send the driver or rideshare app the actual door/zone.

Terminal Link train: T1, T3 and Viscount
The free, accessible Terminal Link is the standard landside connection between Terminal 1, Terminal 3 and Viscount Station. In normal operation it runs 24 hours, with travel between stations typically two to eight minutes.
Terminal 1 station
Follow train signs to the parking garage Level 5, then take the escalator or elevator to the platform.
Terminal 3 station
Follow signs toward the Sheraton Gateway pedestrian bridge, then use the escalator or elevator to the platform.
Viscount Station
Located on Level 4 of Value Park Garage, serving Value Park Garage/Lot and the ALT Hotel area.
Connecting at YYZ: customs, bags and terminal changes
Pearson connection steps depend on where you arrived from, where you are going next, the airlines involved and whether your baggage is through-checked. A single blanket “collect your bag” rule is not reliable here.
International/U.S. → Canada
You normally need Canadian customs and immigration before continuing on a domestic flight. Follow the connection signage and airline instructions for baggage handling.
Any itinerary → United States
U.S.-bound travellers may need U.S. preclearance at Pearson before the onward flight. Allow extra time for CATSA screening plus U.S. border processing.
Do I collect baggage?
It varies by route and airline. Check the airport connection guide and your operating carrier instead of relying on what happened on a previous trip.
International arrivals: CBSA, ArriveCAN and baggage
- Follow Canada Border Services Agency signs. International and U.S. arrivals entering Canada confirm identity and declare goods.
- Use a PIK/eGate if eligible. Scan the travel document, take the prompted photo, answer declaration questions and follow officer instructions.
- Use Advance Declaration when eligible. ArriveCAN can accept the declaration up to 72 hours before arrival and Pearson provides dedicated Express Lane flows.
- Collect baggage and follow customs-exit instructions. If you have goods to declare, use the clearly marked declaration lane.
- Only then tell your driver you are ready. Pearson warns that international arrivals can take roughly 1–3 hours after scheduled landing to clear customs and baggage.
How early to arrive at YYZ—and when Pearson is historically busiest
Your airline’s check-in and bag-drop deadlines are the controlling rules. Pearson’s current general rule of thumb is roughly 90 minutes for domestic and 3–4 hours for international travel. Its historical peak-time page recommends at least 2 hours for Canada and 3 hours for U.S./international when travelling during a busy window.

Security screening
Use Pearson’s live estimates and CATSA’s current carry-on/restricted-item rules. Pearson lists dedicated Trusted Traveller and Family/Special Assistance screening options.
U.S. preclearance
For U.S.-bound flights, CATSA screening currently begins at 3:00 a.m. in both terminals and U.S. CBP processing is published from 3:30 a.m.–9:00 p.m.. You clear U.S. customs before boarding.
Mobile Passport Control
Eligible U.S.-bound travellers can use the U.S. CBP Mobile Passport Control app. It can reduce data-entry friction, but it does not remove security or border inspection.
YYZ Express: when a free security time slot can help
Pearson currently promotes YYZ Express as a free way to reserve expedited access to security screening for eligible departures. It is a queue-entry reservation—not a substitute for airline check-in, bag drop, border processing or boarding time.
No paid membership required
The airport promotes YYZ Express as a free reservation option. Availability is capacity-based, so a time slot may not exist for every flight or time.
Do not plan on it for U.S. flights
Pearson’s published YYZ Express guidance says the program is not available for flights to the United States. U.S.-bound travellers must plan for CATSA and preclearance.
Still arrive for airline deadlines
A reserved screening window cannot rescue a missed baggage cutoff. Work backward from airline check-in/bag-drop and boarding deadlines first.
UP Express from Pearson to Union Station
The Pearson UP Express station is at Terminal 1 beside Terminal Link. Terminal 3 does not have its own UP Express platform, so T3 passengers first take the free Terminal Link to T1.
T1Terminal 1 arrivals → UP Express
- Exit baggage claim and locate the UP Express service counter beside the international arrivals hall.
- Go to Level 2 using the nearby escalator or the elevators along the back wall, then follow Train to City.
- Enter the walkway toward parking garage Level 5 and stay left.
- Turn left before entering the garage parking area and continue following Train to City signs.
- Take the escalator or elevator up to the Terminal Link / UP station level.
- The UP Express platform is just beyond the Terminal Link platform; have a valid fare ready.
T3Terminal 3 arrivals → UP Express
- Near Door D, use the elevator to Level 3; or near Door F, use the escalators to Level 3.
- Walk toward the end of the hall following the train icon / Train to City signs.
- Use the elevator or escalator to reach the Terminal Link platform.
- Take the free blue Terminal Link to Terminal 1; the official PDF describes the ride as roughly 2–8 minutes.
- At T1, the UP Express platform is beside Terminal Link.

TTC Route 900
Pearson lists the accessible 900 Airport Express to Kipling Station. Airport stops are T1 Ground Level, Column R4 and T3 Arrivals, Columns C8–C12. Use TTC’s current trip planner for fare and subway-transfer details.

Use signed, licensed airport taxi/limo stands and avoid unsolicited offers inside the terminal. Accessible and pre-arranged services have their own official pickup instructions.

Change or cancel before the deadline
Pearson says online changes can be made up to 24 hours before arrival. Less than 24 hours can trigger a product-specific cancellation fee.
Reservation grace period
The airport publishes a one-hour grace window around reservation start/end. Time outside the booking can create additional charges.
Use your reservation barcode
For prepaid parking, follow the confirmation instructions and scan the booking barcode. Pearson specifically warns reservation customers not to take a normal ticket at the barrier.
Cell Phone Lot, Express Pass and international-arrival timing
Cell Phone Waiting Area
Wait free for up to 45 minutes. Pearson requires the driver to stay with the vehicle and switch the engine off. Leave only after the passenger has collected baggage and gives an exact terminal + door/zone.
Express Pass
Pearson’s dedicated pickup page currently says a reserved Express Pass can provide up to 20 minutes free in T1/T3 covered garages. A current departures promo displays 18 minutes. Because Pearson is showing both figures, your live booking confirmation is the source of truth.
International arrivals
Pearson tells pickup drivers that international passengers may need roughly 1–3 hours after scheduled landing for customs and baggage. “Landed” does not mean “ready at curb.”
- Check live arrival status.
- Wait off-curb in the Cell Phone Waiting Area or use a booked garage option.
- Ask the passenger to message only after baggage/customs are complete.
- Get terminal, level and exact door/zone before moving.
- Keep curbside stops brief; do not idle waiting for a passenger.
Wheelchair assistance, Changing Places, Aira, Sunflower and in-terminal shuttles
Pearson provides accessible infrastructure and navigation services, while the operating airline handles wheelchair/boarding/connection mobility assistance. Pearson advises contacting the airline at least 48 hours before travel for mobility requests.
Changing Places rooms
Two assisted changerooms are before security: T1 Domestic Arrivals Hall and T3 Domestic Arrivals. They include a wall-mounted changing table (about 250 lb max), hoist, accessible toilet/sink, support rails, privacy screen and shower. Bring your own compatible sling.
Aira Explorer
Pearson offers Aira Explorer free for travellers who are blind or have low vision. A remote agent can visually describe and guide through the airport; it does not replace airline mobility assistance.

Hard-to-find Pearson services that can save a trip
Luggage storage exists in both terminals
T1: Excess Baggage before security in Domestic Arrivals, currently 5 a.m.–11 p.m. T3: before security at Check-In, currently 5 a.m.–10 p.m. Both advertise bag/coat storage for hours or weeks plus some baggage-transfer services.
Nursing rooms and Mamava pods
Post-security locations include T1 D37, E78, F67 and F87/F88 plus Mamava pods near D22, E80/81 and F59. T3 has a nursing room near B1 and pods near B22, C30/31 and A12/A13. Current individual room pages list 24-hour access for the nursing rooms checked.
New T3 arrivals Family Zone
Opened in June 2026, the T3 Family Zone has dedicated Primary Inspection Kiosks configured for families and sensory boards to keep children engaged while guardians complete processing.
24-hour landside pet relief
Easy-to-find examples are T1 Ground Level Door S and T3 Arrivals Door A, both currently listed 24 hours. Pearson says there are additional pre/post-security relief areas; search the map for the closest to your gate.
Pharmacy / medication essentials
DrugSmart is listed in Terminal 1 before security on Level 2 and carries prescription/OTC medication and travel essentials. Pharmacist availability is narrower than store hours, so call/check before relying on a prescription service.
Porter assistance
Pearson lists Ambassador Porter Services in both terminals. Pre-arranged porter requests are recommended 24 hours ahead; fees apply. This is baggage help, not airline wheelchair service.
Pearson LIFT: what current terminal modernization means for travellers
Pearson launched its long-term LIFT infrastructure program in May 2026 with an initial CAD 3-billion airfield/baggage investment. In July 2026 it announced a further CAD 1.5-billion Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 revitalization program covering terminal spaces, lounges, charging, baggage processing, check-in and advanced security screening.
What it means today
The airport remains operating. Construction may change local walking routes, temporary hoarding, curb capacity or service locations, so follow same-day signage and the interactive map.
