Tampa International (TPA): code, terminal & travel guide
TPA is Tampa International Airport in Tampa, Florida. KTPA is its ICAO identifier. If your reservation says PIE, that is a different Tampa Bay airport—St. Pete-Clearwater International in Clearwater.

What airport does TPA identify?
TPA is the passenger-facing IATA code for Tampa International Airport, the major commercial airport serving Tampa and the Tampa Bay region. It is in Tampa, Florida, United States, about five miles west of downtown Tampa.
Airport live checks & travel tools
Use current local conditions, official live-status links and planning calculators before you travel. Airline gate, terminal and flight times can change; your carrier remains the final source for flight-specific details.
Live flight center
Check the airport's official flight board, then confirm any last-minute gate or timing change with the airline.
Current airport-area weather
Useful for planning your trip to the airport. This is model-based local weather, not an aviation METAR or an airline operational forecast.
Quick official checks
Open the source that matches the decision you are making right now.
When should I reach the airport?
A planning estimate based on flight type and common time buffers. Always increase the buffer for severe weather, major holidays, unusual airport alerts or airline instructions.
Connection-risk checker
This is a planning heuristic, not an airline minimum-connection-time rule. International arrivals that require U.S. entry processing, baggage claim and security can need substantially more time.
Parking cost estimator
Uses the airport-specific rates stored in this article's configuration. Rates can change; verify availability and final pricing on the official parking page before driving in.
Passenger pickup readiness
Landing time is not curb-ready time. Add time for taxiing, deplaning, baggage claim, customs when applicable and walking to the correct pickup zone.
Use this three-letter code when booking flights, checking baggage tags, reading airport boards or searching passenger flight status.
Used by aviation weather, flight planning and air-traffic systems. It is why a METAR or pilot chart may show KTPA instead of TPA.
The U.S. FAA location identifier also matches the IATA code at this airport.
Does TPA stand for a phrase?
No special phrase needs to be decoded. TPA is the assigned IATA abbreviation for Tampa. Locals sometimes say “TIA” conversationally for Tampa International Airport, but TPA is the code that belongs on an airline reservation or baggage tag.
Where did the airport and code come from?
The site was originally known as Drew Field, named for Tampa cattleman and land developer John H. Drew. It became Drew Army Airfield during World War II. The modern terminal complex opened on April 15, 1971 with the hub-and-spoke landside/airside design and automated people movers that still shape how passengers navigate TPA today.
TPA vs PIE: make sure you drive to the airport on your ticket
TPA

What do the Red and Blue sides mean at Tampa International?
Red and Blue identify Main Terminal ticketing and baggage-claim sides. They are not separate terminals and they are not the Airside letters. Baggage Claim is Level 1: Red is the north side and Blue is the south side. Your gate is then in Airside A, C, E or F.
Red Side
Current Red-side carriers include Air Canada, Alaska, Avelo, Breeze, British Airways, Discover, Edelweiss, Frontier, Southwest, Sun Country and WestJet.
Blue Side
Current Blue-side carriers include Aeromexico, American, Avianca, Cayman, Copa, Delta, JetBlue, Porter, United and Virgin Atlantic.

How Tampa’s Main Terminal, Airsides and shuttle trains fit together
TPA separates the central Main Terminal from gate buildings called Airsides. For a typical departure, follow your Red/Blue ticketing side, check in if needed, take the short automated shuttle to the correct Airside, clear that Airside’s TSA checkpoint and continue to the gate.
Baggage Claim
Red baggage claim is north and Blue is south. Ground transportation and curb pickup are reached from this level.
Transfer level
Central circulation, parking/hotel access and Main Terminal connections.
Ticketing
Airline counters plus the central information area. Confirm Red/Blue before following roadway or elevator signage.
Airsides
A, C, E and F contain the current passenger gates and their own security checkpoints.
SkyConnect is not the gate shuttle
SkyConnect links the Main Terminal, Economy Parking and Rental Car Center. It is separate from the short shuttles that connect the Main Terminal to Airsides A, C, E and F. TPA currently warns that SkyConnect runs at reduced frequency nightly from 12:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., when waits may be about 10 minutes for maintenance.
Changing Airsides at TPA: when you must clear security again
TPA’s four current Airsides are separate secure gate areas. If an onward flight departs from a different Airside, return by shuttle to the Main Terminal and go through security again at the new Airside. This also applies if you deliberately leave your Airside to visit a restaurant or lounge in another one.
Stay within the secure Airside and walk to the next gate unless airline staff direct otherwise.
Shuttle back to Main Terminal → walk to new Airside shuttle lobby → ride shuttle → clear that Airside’s TSA checkpoint.
Add extra time for baggage collection, new bag drop and the second security screening; protection after a missed connection may differ.
Official walking maps for a long connection
TPA publishes dedicated walking maps for the Main Terminal and Airsides A, C, E and F. They are useful for estimating how much walking you can do without leaving your current area and for planning accessible routes.
Before a TPA departure: airline, side, Airside, bag cutoff and curb choice
A scheduled departure time alone is not enough. On travel day, confirm the operating airline, Red/Blue ticketing side, Airside/gate, bag-drop deadline and flight status. Airline cutoffs can be earlier than the airport’s general arrival guidance.
1. Confirm the operating carrier
This determines the current Red/Blue side and usually the Airside. Codeshare passengers should look for “operated by.”
2. Check status before driving
Use the airport/airline live status, then check again after TSA because a gate can change while you are in transit.
3. Check baggage deadline
Bag-drop and check-in cutoffs are airline-specific. Do not assume arriving before TSA closes is enough to accept a checked bag.
Remote bag check at the Rental Car Center
Most eligible domestic passengers can use the airport’s remote bag-check service at the Rental Car Center, currently operating roughly 5 a.m.–5 p.m.. TPA says users must check in there at least 90 minutes before scheduled departure. Airline eligibility can vary, so verify before relying on it.
Curbside check-in
TPA’s airline directory currently lists BAGS curbside check-in with general hours of about 4:30 a.m.–6 p.m.; eligibility is airline-specific. If you require full-service ticketing, special-document checks or assistance, use the airline counter instead.
Airport arrival-time planner
TPA TSA checkpoints: Airside opening times and realistic buffers
Each current Airside has its own TSA checkpoint. TPA advises passengers to arrive at least two hours before scheduled departure and be at the gate about 30 minutes before departure. The airport says its busiest checkpoint period is typically 6–9 a.m. and around holiday travel days.
| Airside | eGates open | TSA opens | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3:30 a.m. | 3:45 a.m. | Verify very early airline check-in/bag-drop separately. |
| C | 3:15 a.m. | 3:30 a.m. | Southwest commonly uses Airside C. |
| E | 3:15 a.m. | 3:30 a.m. | Current Air Canada/Delta/Frontier flights use E. |
| F | 3:45 a.m. | 4:00 a.m. | American and many international carriers use F. |
Typical screening guidance
TPA says travelers should allow roughly 20 minutes in non-peak periods and 45 minutes at peak times. These are planning figures, not a live wait-time promise.
TSA PreCheck
TPA states TSA PreCheck is available at all four current Airsides. Lane availability and operating hours can vary by checkpoint and day.
TSA Cares
Travelers who need screening assistance should contact TSA Cares before travel and explain the accommodation needed; airline wheelchair service is a separate request.
Can a non-ticketed caregiver or parent go to the gate?
Normally only ticketed passengers may pass the Main Terminal shuttle-lobby entrances. An airline may issue a gate pass for an adult accompanying a minor or a traveler who needs assistance. Ask the airline ticket counter; approval is not automatic.
International travel at TPA: customs, baggage, MPC and meeting arrivals
Yes, Tampa International handles international flights. Current international-arrivals processing is associated with Airside F. TPA warns people meeting an international arrival that it can take an hour or longer after landing before the traveler reaches the Main Terminal.
What the official international-arrivals PDF is actually useful for
TPA’s downloadable “What to Expect: International Arrivals” sheet emphasizes two practical actions: determine which CBP processing option you are eligible to use and then follow the airport signs to that lane. The PDF shows APC, Mobile Passport Control, Global Entry, NEXUS and standard CBP processing as examples. Because the sheet is an older document and program eligibility changes, use current CBP rules—not the old chart alone—to decide which program you can use.
Mobile Passport Control
CBP’s current MPC guidance allows eligible travelers to prepare arrival information and submit a selfie/questions up to four hours before landing or after landing. MPC is free and different from Global Entry. Use only the current CBP MPC app and keep the physical travel document available.
Enhanced Passenger Processing for U.S. passport holders
In 2026, TPA and CBP introduced biometric Enhanced Passenger Processing in Airside F with two dedicated lanes for returning U.S. passport holders. It is an optional current processing path; follow CBP signage on arrival rather than assuming a particular lane before landing.
Global Entry Enrollment on Arrival
Conditionally approved Global Entry applicants can currently use Enrollment on Arrival at Airside F, Booth 14; CBP lists hours of 9 a.m.–10 p.m.. Hours can change, so verify before depending on the interview opportunity.
Meeting an international passenger
Do not wait at the baggage-claim curb while the traveler is still being processed. Use the free Cell Phone Lot, or park in Short Term where the first hour is free and meet inside after the traveler reaches the Main Terminal.
International departure and duty-free planning
TPA’s international page asks departing international passengers to arrive at least two hours before departure. It currently lists duty-free shopping in Airside E across from Gate 74 and Airside F near the screening checkpoint. Airline document checks can make international check-in slower, so a larger personal buffer may still be wise.
TPA parking rates, clearances, carts, EV charging and best-use cases
Parking cost depends on duration and how close you want to be to the Main Terminal. These are the current published drive-up maximums; online reservations can price differently.
| Option | Current rate | 24-hour max | Clearance | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short Term | 0–60 min free; 60–80 min $4; +$2 each 20 min | $28 | 6 ft 8 in | Meet someone inside, short stays, closest access |
| Long Term | 0–60 min free; 60–80 min $4; +$2 each 20 min | $22 | 7 ft 10 in | Walk/moving walkway to Main Terminal |
| Economy | 0–15 min free; 15–20 min $1; +$1 each 20 min | $18 | 8 ft Levels 2–6; 13 ft Level 1/surface | Longer trips / taller vehicles; SkyConnect required |
| Cell Phone Lot | Free | Free while waiting | Surface lot | Wait until arriving passenger is curb-ready |
Maximum stay
Airport parking facilities have a 45-day limit. For anything longer, contact parking operations before leaving the vehicle.
EV charging
TPA currently provides free EV charging at most airport parking facilities. A parking fee still applies; charger availability is first-come unless the airport says otherwise.
Payment
Except for separately booked online parking, TPA lists cash, major cards, SunPass Plus, Apple Pay and Google Pay as accepted options.
Where to find Smarte Carte luggage carts
- Short TermArmstrong/Sikorsky elevator areas on Levels 4, 6 and 7.
- Long TermLevel 4 at the Main Terminal entrance.
- EconomyLevel 1 gold and green sections near SkyConnect elevators.
- Main TerminalAdditional cart stations; current rental fee is $6 with a 25¢ return refund.
Simple parking-cost planner
Pickup, drop-off, Express Curbside and the free Cell Phone Lot
Standard drop-off
Use Red or Blue Departures for the operating airline and unload only while the vehicle is attended. For a longer goodbye, park in Short Term; the first hour is free.
Standard pickup
Arrivals curbs are active loading only. Wait in the Cell Phone Lot until the passenger has bags and is physically outside, then drive to the correct Red/Blue curb.
Express Curbside
Best for travelers who do not need a ticket counter or baggage claim. Approach Red/Blue Arrivals or Departures and follow the left-lane Express signage.
Where Uber/Lyft, taxi, bus, hotel shuttles and rental cars actually pick up
Uber, Lyft and Wridz
Official ride-app pickup is at Red Express Curbside, Blue Express Curbside or the SkyCenter One remote curb. TPA currently adds a $5 service fee to app fares. Follow the app’s exact pickup pin before requesting.
Yellow Cab
Taxi stands are at Ground Transportation Red 1 and Blue 2. Current airport pricing lists $3.50 for the first 1/5 mile, $2.50 per mile after that, a $20 airport minimum and a $35 maximum flat fare to downtown Tampa or the cruise terminal.
HART / PSTA public bus
The public-bus stop is at the Rental Car Center remote curb. Take SkyConnect, then follow remote-curb signs. The current route map and schedule are posted at the stop.
Rental cars
On-airport rental companies are centralized at the Rental Car Center, reached by SkyConnect. If returning a vehicle before a flight, add train and bag-check time rather than treating the car return as terminal arrival.
Hotel and charter buses
TPA directs these services to the four Level 1 Ground Transportation quad lots: Blue 1, Blue 2, Red 1 and Red 2. The west crossover drives on Departures are closed to buses, so a hotel’s instructions may differ from passenger-car curb directions.
Turo and other peer-to-peer vehicles
Peer-to-peer vehicle sharing is permitted in the Economy Parking Garage. The Rental Car Center remote curb is for quick pickup/drop-off only; waiting there is not allowed.
Wheelchair, hidden-disability, service-animal and accessible-parking help
The operating airline provides wheelchair assistance from curb/check-in through boarding and gate transfers. Request the specific help needed in advance and reconfirm before travel. Airport Guest Experience, TSA and rental-car providers handle different parts of the journey.
Hidden Disabilities Sunflower
Free Sunflower lanyards are available at the information desk in the center of Main Terminal Level 3. The symbol indicates a non-visible disability but does not replace an airline or TSA accommodation request.
TPA 360
The airport’s familiarization program helps travelers with physical, intellectual or developmental needs practice key parts of the trip. Request ahead because tours are scheduled and group size is limited.
Wheelchair curb choice
Do not use Blue Express Departures if you need airline wheelchair service; TPA specifically says wheelchair assistance is not available at that curb.
Accessible parking
Accessible spaces are available throughout airport parking. Florida-law free-parking eligibility applies only to qualifying vehicles/placards; read the airport’s current rules before assuming the fee is waived.
Service-animal relief
Relief areas are available outside the Main Terminal and after security at each current Airside. Use the airport map for the closest route from your gate.
Rental-car assistance
Contact the rental company before arrival if wheelchair help is required between the Rental Car Center and Main Terminal; service arrangements are provider-specific.
Wi-Fi, lounges, nursing, pet relief, hotel, luggage storage and 24-hour basics
Free Wi-Fi
Connect to the official network named TPA in the Main Terminal and Airsides.
Nursing rooms
Private nursing rooms are provided in the Main Terminal and current Airsides. Use the live map for the closest room because gate-area routing matters.
Pet / service-animal relief
TPA provides post-security relief areas at each current Airside plus pre-security outdoor options around the Main Terminal baggage level.
Water refill
Post-security bottle-filling stations are available across the Airsides. Take an empty reusable bottle through screening and refill afterward.
No airport-run luggage storage
TPA itself does not provide luggage storage. The connected Tampa Airport Marriott sells Day Pass options that can include luggage storage; verify current availability with the hotel.
Information help
Official TPA pages currently conflict on the exact Guest Experience kiosk staffing schedule—one says 24/7, another says 4 a.m.–11:30 p.m. For urgent around-the-clock airport help, use Airport Operations.
Current airline lounges
| Lounge | Location | Who should verify access |
|---|---|---|
| Delta Sky Club | Airside E, near Gate E68 | Eligible Delta / partner / membership travelers |
| American Admirals Club | Airside F, near Gate 85 | Eligible American / oneworld / membership travelers |
| USO Central Florida | Main Terminal Level 2 near British Airways ticketing | Eligible military community; not a general public lounge |
Long layover or late-night TPA: what is actually available
Changing Airsides
Return to Main Terminal and clear TSA again if you want to enter a different Airside. Do not plan a lounge/restaurant visit in another Airside on a tight connection.
Showers
TPA’s current layover guide says airport lounges do not have shower facilities. The connected Tampa Airport Marriott is the practical option to check for a day-use room.
Luggage storage
The airport does not run baggage storage. Marriott Day Pass offerings may include storage, but availability and conditions should be confirmed with the hotel.
24-hour basics
TPA currently lists free Wi-Fi, water-refill access, ATMs/currency services and a Main Terminal Starbucks among useful overnight services. Individual concessions can change hours.
SkyConnect overnight
SkyConnect continues to connect Main Terminal, Economy and Rental Car Center, but the airport warns of reduced frequency from 12:30–4:30 a.m. with waits around 10 minutes.
Cancellation strategy
Ask the operating airline about rebooking, hotel or meal assistance before paying. Keep medication, chargers, ID and one change of clothes in carry-on baggage.
TPA All Access is for visitors—not a connection shortcut
Non-flying visitors can register in advance for TPA All Access to enter one Airside during designated pass-pickup/security windows. It does not let a connecting passenger bypass security or move airside-to-airside without rescreening.
Lost bag, phone, ID or rental-car item: contact the right place first
The correct owner of the claim depends on where the item disappeared. Filing with every department can slow the process, so start with the location below.
| Where / what happened | Who owns the case | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Terminal, Airside, parking, restroom or common area | TPA Lost & Found | Submit the airport online lost-item claim. |
| Item left on aircraft | Operating airline | Use the airline’s lost-item form/service desk. |
| Checked bag delayed, missing or damaged | Operating airline baggage service | Report it before leaving baggage claim when possible. |
| Item at TSA checkpoint | Start with TPA/TSA guidance | Note checkpoint/Airside and screening time; use official lost-item instructions. |
| Rental car | Rental company | Contact that company’s Rental Car Center location. |
What the KTPA airport diagram can—and cannot—tell a passenger
The downloadable airfield diagram shows runways, taxiways, Airside locations, U.S. Customs areas and the control-tower/field layout. It is not a passenger terminal map: it does not replace Red/Blue wayfinding, gate maps or ground-transport directions.
Runway 1L/19R
The airport-hosted diagram labels the west runway at roughly 11,002 × 150 ft.
Runway 1R/19L
The parallel east runway is shown at roughly 8,300 × 150 ft.
Runway 10/28
The east-west runway is shown at roughly 6,999 × 150 ft.
Why runway information can matter to a passenger
Wind shifts, thunderstorms, runway configuration and taxi traffic can change how long an aircraft spends between pushback and takeoff or between landing and the gate. That explains why an airline can still show an “on-time” schedule while ground movement is slower than usual.
Airside D and shuttle replacement: what is current vs future
Do not navigate to Airside D for a 2026 flight. It is under construction and is scheduled to open to passengers in 2029. Current commercial passenger Airsides remain A, C, E and F.
What Airside D will add
16 gates, its own TSA checkpoint, international-arrivals CBP facility, concessions and two lounge spaces. Delta has been announced as the anchor tenant.
What travelers may see now
Steel/guideway work near George J. Bean Parkway and temporary overnight roadway construction can change traffic patterns. Follow same-day airport signs over old screenshots.
Airside shuttle replacements
TPA is replacing shuttle vehicles at Airsides A, C and E during 2026. The passenger route remains Main Terminal ↔ assigned Airside, but maintenance/testing can create temporary operational changes.
