London Heathrow terminal guide: T2, T3, T4 and T5
Terminal 1 closed in 2015. Heathrow now uses Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. Do not assign yourself a terminal from route, nationality or “international flight” status; use the operating airline and Heathrow terminal finder because airline moves and codeshares happen.

Connecting at LHR: protected ticket, terminal change or self-transfer?
One protected itinerary
Follow purple Flight Connections signs. Heathrow says all passengers boarding a new flight go through security again. Most checked bags on normal through-ticket connections are transferred automatically, but confirm the tag and airline instructions.
When the onward flight is in another terminal, the protected connections route can use a free shuttle bus about every 10 minutes.
Separate tickets / self-connect
Heathrow does not treat separately booked flights as a normal protected connection. If you must reclaim baggage, you generally leave the airside connection route, meet any UK border requirement, travel to the correct departure terminal, check in/bag drop and clear security again.
The second airline may not protect a missed flight when the first ticket is delayed.

Clear security again
Have the onward boarding pass and compliant hand baggage ready. International-to-UK/Ireland connection flows can include additional border/biometric steps.
Heathrow security: 2-litre liquids, electronics and destination exceptions
Heathrow’s current main hand-baggage page states that passengers at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 can leave liquids in containers up to 2 litres and large electronics inside cabin baggage during security screening.
Liquids
Containers up to 2 litres can remain in the bag. A reusable metal or insulated bottle must be empty before security; refill it after screening.
Laptops and tablets
Large electronic devices can remain inside cabin baggage under Heathrow’s current upgraded-scanner process.
Security bag-size ceiling
Heathrow’s security limit is two hand-baggage items, each no larger than 56 × 45 × 25 cm. Your airline may allow less, so airline rules still control boarding.
Flying to the United States
Heathrow says powders over 350g / 350ml are not allowed in cabin baggage on U.S.-bound flights, with listed exceptions such as medicines, baby powder and human ashes that may still receive extra screening.
Flying to Australia
Heathrow states that liquids in containers over 100ml cannot be taken on flights to Australia. Destination-specific rules can therefore be stricter than the normal Heathrow screening allowance.
How early should you arrive?
Heathrow’s general planning guidance is at least 2 hours before short-haul and 3 hours before long-haul. Airline check-in and bag-drop cutoffs can be earlier, and long gate walks can occur after security.
Heathrow Express, Elizabeth line, Piccadilly line or taxi?
The best choice depends on your final London neighborhood, budget, luggage and onward connection. A 15-minute train to Paddington is not automatically the fastest door-to-door route if your hotel is on the Elizabeth or Piccadilly line.

Heathrow Express
Non-stop trains run every 15 minutes to Paddington. T2/3 to Paddington takes 15 minutes; Terminal 5 is about five minutes more. Terminal 4 passengers connect via the free terminal rail transfer.
Elizabeth line
Serves T2/3, T4 and T5 and continues through central London. Heathrow currently publishes a Zone 1 fare of £13.90. Oyster and contactless are accepted.
Piccadilly line
Serves T2/3, T4 and T5. Normal operating hours are roughly 05:00–23:30; Night Tube runs through the night on Friday and Saturday, but does not serve Terminal 4.
Free travel between Heathrow terminals
Heathrow provides free inter-terminal rail travel. Follow the station instructions for the correct free-transfer ticket or accepted Oyster/contactless procedure; flight-connection buses are separate airside services.
Located in the central terminal area, reached by pedestrian routes from Terminals 2 and 3.
Terminal 4 has its own Elizabeth line and Piccadilly line station.
Heathrow Express, Elizabeth line and Piccadilly line serve Terminal 5.
Coaches serve T4, T5 and Heathrow Central Bus Station near T2/T3; provider times and stands vary.
Heathrow parking, £7 drop-off, ULEZ and Terminal 4 changes
Terminal drop-off
A £7 charge applies per entry to the terminal drop-off forecourts, 24/7. No payment machine exists in the zone; pay online/phone before or by midnight the following day.
Free Park & Ride pickup/drop-off
Most Heathrow Park & Ride areas allow 0–29 minutes free; 30 minutes–1 hour 59 minutes is £9.40 at current drive-up pricing. Terminal 4 Zone A has a special 2026 two-hour-free arrangement.
ULEZ and electric cars
Heathrow is inside London’s ULEZ; non-compliant vehicles can owe the current £12.50 daily ULEZ charge. Heathrow currently states that its car parks do not provide EV charging, so charge before arrival.

Terminal 4 parking and Priority Pick-Up changed on 23 June 2026
The old Terminal 4 multi-storey passenger car park closed for redevelopment. Passenger parking moved to Zone A of T4 Park & Ride; the first two hours are free there, with accessible shuttle buses that Heathrow says run every five minutes and can take as little as six minutes.

Where to meet an arriving passenger at Heathrow
For an indoor meeting, send the arriving passenger the terminal plus the named meeting point, not “meet me outside.” Immigration and baggage delivery can vary, so drivers should track the live arrival before entering paid parking.

Is LHR airport code in India? Heathrow transit rules for Indian travelers
The useful question for an Indian passport holder is not simply “Do I leave the airport?” UK rules distinguish airside transit (no UK border control) from landside transit (you apply to enter the UK, for example to collect/recheck bags or change airports).
Airside transit
The March 2026 Home Office transit guidance explicitly uses a Heathrow example: arriving at Terminal 3 and departing Terminal 5 can still be airside when the passenger does not pass UK border control.
However, the same official guidance lists India among nationalities that can require a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV), unless a specified exemption applies.
Landside transit
Going through UK border control—often because of baggage collection, a self-transfer, overnight plans or an airport change—is landside transit. The UK has Transit Visitor and Transit Without Visa (TWOV) rules, but eligibility depends on the exact documents and itinerary.
Under the current TWOV guidance, eligible passengers must meet all conditions; a confirmed onward flight must depart before 11:59 p.m. on the day after arrival.
The Home Office guidance says the March 2026 removal of the TWOV appendix was an error and that UK transit policy did not change as a result. It also defines airside/landside transit and lists India in the DATV nationality schedule. This page summarizes traveler-relevant implications only; it is not legal advice.
LHR airport code time now: London versus India
India remains on IST (UTC+5:30). London uses GMT in winter and BST in summer, so India is normally 5 hours 30 minutes ahead during GMT and 4 hours 30 minutes ahead during BST. The live tool on this page calculates the current difference automatically.

Airport hotels: choose by terminal, not just “Heathrow”
T2/T3 area
Several hotels serve the central terminal area, but “airport hotel” does not always mean walkable. Verify the pedestrian/rail/shuttle route from the actual terminal.
Terminal 4
Terminal 4 has hotels connected by pedestrian links; check the exact bridge and current access during the 2026 forecourt/car-park redevelopment.
Terminal 5
Sofitel London Heathrow is directly connected to Terminal 5, useful for very early departures and overnight stays.
Heathrow to Gatwick, London City, Luton or Stansted
A flight arriving at LHR and departing from another London airport is not an airside connection. You must enter the UK when required, collect baggage, travel across/around London, check in at the second airport and clear security again.
Heathrow ↔ Gatwick
Heathrow’s inter-airport guide describes the road distance as roughly 42 miles / 68 km. Direct coach travel can be around 70 minutes under normal conditions, but road traffic makes a large buffer essential.
Heathrow ↔ London City
No direct train runs airport-to-airport. Common rail routes use Elizabeth line plus Jubilee/DLR or other London changes. Include walking and check-in time at LCY.
