Chicago O’Hare (ORD): know the code, navigate the airport
A decision-first guide for U.S. and international travelers: verify ORD, find the correct terminal, judge a connection, plan security, compare parking, locate rideshare, use CTA and open official live airport information.
Check these live pages before leaving
These cards open official current information. The page does not hardcode a “live” delay, weather, customs or parking value that could become stale while you are traveling.
2026–2027 ORD flight limits and construction: what travelers should know
O’Hare is operating during a period of high demand, airfield work and terminal redevelopment. These conditions do not predict that an individual flight will be delayed, but they make same-day airline, FAA and airport checks especially important.
Daily scheduled-operation limit
The FAA’s current order limits ORD to 2,708 scheduled operations per day during designated hours. The FAA announced that the current limits will continue through October 30, 2027.
An “operation” is an arrival or departure. The limit is airport-wide and is not a status for your individual flight.
Why the limit matters
The FAA cites ongoing airspace and operational constraints, gate capacity and construction-related taxiway impacts. Airlines may adjust schedules, aircraft or departure times; the operating airline must handle ticket changes and rebooking.
Use two different status checks
Use the FAA ORD status for airport-wide traffic programs and the operating airline for your flight, gate, baggage and rebooking. One source cannot replace the other.
Large nonstop network snapshot
As of July 2026, the airport listed approximately 1,154 daily direct domestic flights and 150 daily direct international flights. Route counts and frequencies change seasonally, so verify a specific destination through the airline.
Fast answers travelers usually need at the worst possible moment
These are the details most likely to cause a missed pickup, wrong terminal, failed connection or unnecessary expense. Use the official links in the relevant section for same-day confirmation.
Standard rideshare is not at every terminal curb
Official standard app-pickup zones are listed at Terminal 2 upper level, poles 2A–2G, and Terminal 3 upper level, poles 3G, 3H, 3J and 3K. The official Terminal 5 map directs standard rideshare passengers to the ATS and Terminal 2 departures level.
Avoid a pickup mistakeTerminal 5 is not only international
Selected domestic flights also use Terminal 5, while some international departures use other terminals. “Domestic” or “international” alone cannot identify your check-in terminal.
Check operating airlineTTB does not run around the clock
The secure-side Terminal Transfer Bus runs about every 15 minutes from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Eligible passengers outside those hours use the landside ATS and may need TSA rescreening.
Connection riskInternational connectors normally collect every checked bag
Unless arriving from a U.S. preclearance airport, passengers clear CBP, claim checked baggage, complete customs and then recheck bags—even when the tag shows the final destination.
Customs sequenceThe curb is not a waiting area
Drivers should wait free in the Cell Phone Lot at 560 N. Bessie Coleman Drive until the passenger has baggage and provides the terminal and door. Curbside waiting is prohibited.
Pickup readinessSeparate tickets change the connection calculation
A separate onward ticket may require bag collection and a new check-in, and the second airline may not protect a missed flight. Build a much larger buffer than a single protected itinerary.
Ticket protectionNo acceptable ID does not mean automatic entry
Beginning February 1, 2026, TSA may offer fee-based ConfirmID identity verification to some travelers without acceptable identification. It can add time and is not guaranteed to resolve every case.
TSA ID problemMPC can be prepared before landing
Eligible international travelers may prepare a Mobile Passport Control submission up to four hours before landing, then follow current CBP instructions on arrival.
Faster CBP preparationCarry an empty bottle through TSA
Post-security water-refill stations are listed across Terminals 1–3. Empty the bottle before screening, then use the official amenity directory to find the nearest refill point.
Free airport essentialWhat airport is ORD?
ORD is Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Chicago’s primary international aviation hub. ORD appears on airline bookings, boarding passes, baggage tags, airport transfers, hotel shuttle reservations and flight-status systems.
KORD is the four-letter ICAO identifier used in aviation operations and flight-planning systems. The FAA location identifier is also ORD.
Why is O’Hare’s airport code ORD?
ORD comes from Orchard Field, the earlier name associated with the airport site. Chicago selected Orchard Field for its new airport in 1945. In 1949, the city renamed it Chicago O’Hare International Airport to honor U.S. Navy aviator Edward H. “Butch” O’Hare, while the established ORD identifier remained.
Orchard Field selected
The former aircraft-assembly site was selected for Chicago’s new airport and the Orchard-related identifier became established.
O’Hare name adopted
The airport was renamed to honor Butch O’Hare, but changing the familiar code would have disrupted airline and aviation systems.

Chicago O’Hare terminal guide
O’Hare currently uses passenger Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5. There is no active passenger Terminal 4. Assignments can change, and Terminal 5 also handles selected domestic flights, so confirm the operating airline and terminal before traveling.
Terminal 1
Concourses B and C. Centered on United Airlines and its connecting network, with selected partner operations.
Terminal 2
Concourses E and F. Handles a mixture of domestic, regional and connecting operations.
Terminal 3
Concourses G, H, K and L. Centered on American Airlines and also used by other carriers.
Terminal 5
Concourse M. Primary international-arrivals terminal and also used for selected domestic services.
Where key services are located inside each ORD terminal
This matrix prioritizes services that are difficult to locate during a connection: nursing, family support, lounges, quiet spaces, assistance desks and service-animal relief. Locations can shift during construction, so use the official indoor map after reaching the terminal.
Terminal 1 essentials
United-centered terminal with the underground B–C connector and the illuminated “The Sky’s the Limit” walkway.
Terminal 2 essentials
Central domestic terminal and a useful services hub between Terminals 1 and 3.
Terminal 3 essentials
American-centered terminal with the Rotunda linking services and multiple concourses.
Terminal 5 essentials
Primary international-arrivals facility, also used by selected domestic services. It has its own garage and enclosed pedestrian bridge.
Walk, ATS or Terminal Transfer Bus?
Secure-side walking between Terminals 1, 2 and 3
Connecting passengers can generally walk between the domestic terminals without leaving the secured area. O’Hare is large, so gate-to-gate distance can be much longer than the terminal numbers suggest.
Airport Transit System
The free automated ATS runs 24 hours a day and normally arrives every 3–5 minutes during peak periods. It connects Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5 with the Multi-Modal Facility for rental cars, Economy Lot F, Kiss ‘n’ Fly, Pace buses and Metra.
Airside Terminal Transfer Bus for eligible connectors
The TTB runs about every 15 minutes from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and is only for connecting passengers with a same-day boarding pass for the destination terminal.
- Terminal 1 temporary stop: Gate C18B.
- Terminal 3 stops: Gates G17 and K20.
- Terminal 5 stop: Gate M13.
Outside service hours—or when not eligible—exit security, take the ATS and pass through TSA screening at the onward terminal.
Immigration, baggage, customs and onward connections
Most international passengers arriving without U.S. preclearance enter through Terminal 5 and must complete U.S. entry procedures before continuing. Flights from certain preclearance airports can arrive more like domestic flights.
Proceed to CBP inspection
Follow the sterile corridor to passport control. Keep passports and required travel documents available.
Collect checked baggage
International connecting passengers normally collect checked bags after inspection even when the tag displays the final destination, unless officials or the airline provide a different authorized process.
Complete customs
Follow declaration and inspection instructions. Agricultural and food restrictions apply even when the items are legal in the departure country.
Recheck baggage
Use the connecting-bag facility when the airline accepts the bag. Separate tickets may require carrying the bag to the onward airline’s public check-in counter.
Transfer and clear TSA screening
Use the ATS to reach Terminals 1, 2 or 3 unless an eligible airside transfer applies. All applicable connecting passengers must complete TSA screening again.
Mobile Passport Control
Eligible travelers can use the free CBP MPC app to prepare document, photo and declaration information up to four hours before landing, then follow the current designated process after arrival.
Global Entry
Approved members can use the current Global Entry process. Conditionally approved applicants may be able to complete Enrollment on Arrival when eligible.
Wait-time planning
CBP airport wait-time data does not include baggage delivery, customs, walking, bag recheck, ATS travel or TSA rescreening.
ORD security checkpoints and arrival-time planning
A useful baseline is to reach the terminal about two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international departure. This is a planning baseline, not a promise: add time for baggage cutoff, parking, rental return, children, mobility support, holidays, construction and severe weather.

Identification and ConfirmID
Carry an acceptable physical ID. Starting February 1, 2026, TSA may offer fee-based ConfirmID alternate identity verification to some passengers without acceptable ID; expect additional time and do not treat it as guaranteed boarding.
Liquids and duty-free
Standard carry-on liquid limits apply. International connectors should review the special rules for duty-free liquids in secure tamper-evident bags before TSA rescreening.
Screening assistance
Contact TSA Cares at 855-787-2227, ideally at least 72 hours before travel. At the checkpoint, ask for a Passenger Support Specialist when needed.
- Confirm the operating airline and terminal.
- Check check-in and bag-drop cutoffs.
- Add garage, shuttle or ATS time.
- Review battery, medication and liquid rules.
- Keep ID and boarding pass accessible.
- Recheck the gate after screening.
CTA, taxi, rideshare, rental cars, regional buses and MDW transfer
CTA Blue Line to downtown Chicago
The Blue Line operates 24 hours between O’Hare and Chicago. Normal travel to the Loop is approximately 40–45 minutes; planned work or disruption can add time. The O’Hare single-trip fare is generally $5 under current CTA rules.
From Terminals 1–3, follow “CTA Trains” or “Trains to City” signs to the station below the main-garage area. From Terminal 5, the official map directs travelers to use ATS and continue through the pedestrian route to the Blue Line.
Licensed taxi and shared-ride option
Official taxi stands are outside baggage claim on the lower level at every terminal. Do not accept an unsolicited ride inside the terminal or on the departure level. The airport publishes an average downtown fare of about $50, subject to traffic and meter charges.
When multiple parties are available, the airport also publishes shared-ride fares of $24 per person to downtown, $24 to McCormick Place and $37 to Midway. Availability is not guaranteed.
Uber, Lyft and standard app pickup
Official standard rideshare zones are on the upper departures level at Terminal 2, orange poles 2A–2G, and Terminal 3, green poles 3G, 3H, 3J and 3K. Terminal 2 has an indoor waiting area between vestibules 2A and 2D.
The official Terminal 5 map directs standard rideshare passengers to take ATS to Terminal 2. From other terminals, follow the live app and airport signs because routing can change. Request only after baggage collection and arrival at the correct pickup zone.
Prearranged limousine or black car
Call the provider after collecting baggage. The service should provide a license plate, vehicle description and meeting door. Official guidance places livery pickup in designated lower-level commercial lanes; a vehicle may take roughly 5–20 minutes to reach the pickup point after the call.
Rental cars at the Multi-Modal Facility
All on-airport rental-car operations are centralized at the MMF, 10255 W. Zemke Blvd. Take the free 24-hour ATS from any terminal. Verify fuel, toll, return and after-hours rules directly with the rental company.
Pace, Metra and regional buses
Pace uses MMF bus bays 8 and 9; Routes 250 and 330 serve the facility. The Metra O’Hare Transfer station is behind the MMF and North Central Service is much less frequent than the CTA. Regional coach pickup is provider-specific, so confirm the MMF bay and departure time.
Hotel and off-airport parking shuttles
Official guidance states that hotel and off-airport parking shuttle pickups have moved to the Terminal 2 Arrivals curbside. Some providers may continue Terminal 5 pickup. Confirm the exact terminal, door and operating hours directly with the hotel or parking company before leaving baggage claim.
O’Hare parking rates, clearances and EV charging
Rates below are official published rates and include taxes where the airport states so. Availability can change during the drive, especially on holidays.
| Option | Best use | Published rate | Access | Clearance / EV |

EV charging
Official charging is available in Main Garage Level 1, Terminal 5 Garage and Economy Lot F. A parking space does not guarantee a charger will be open.
More than 30 days
Contact the parking office before leaving a vehicle for more than 30 days to avoid enforcement or account problems.
Vehicle assistance
The parking office handles questions about dead batteries, flat tires, booted vehicles and accessible parking.
Passenger pickup, drop-off, Cell Phone Lot and Kiss ‘n’ Fly
Dropping off
- Confirm the operating airline and terminal.
- Follow Departures and terminal signs.
- Use the upper curb for active unloading.
- Keep the driver with the vehicle.
- Do not leave a vehicle unattended.
Picking up
- Track the flight and wait for the passenger’s message.
- Ask for terminal, door and curb zone.
- Use the lower arrivals curb for active loading.
- Do not circle repeatedly or wait at the curb.
- Confirm the passenger is outside before approaching.
Cell Phone Lot
Wait free at 560 N. Bessie Coleman Drive until the passenger has reached the curb with baggage. Terminal-curb waiting is prohibited.
Kiss ‘n’ Fly
Kiss ‘n’ Fly at the Multi-Modal Facility can avoid congested terminal roads. Passengers use the ATS between the MMF and all terminals. Pickup parking is limited, so it is not a long-wait lot.
