ZRH airport code: Zurich Airport travel essentials

ZRH is the IATA code for Zurich Airport, Switzerland’s main intercontinental aviation hub. This guide explains ZRH vs LSZH and adds the practical details travelers need for check-in, gates, connections, security, rail, parking, family travel, lounges, overnight stays and airport help.

Quick answer: ZRH is Zurich Airport’s passenger-facing IATA code. LSZH is the ICAO code used in aviation operations. Zurich Airport lies north of central Zurich around Kloten and has its own railway station with frequent trains to Zürich Hauptbahnhof.
Independent guide: Airport-Guides.org is not Zurich Airport Ltd., the Swiss government, SBB, ZVV, SWISS, a ground handler, airline or parking operator. Gates, airline check-in positions, security procedures, queues, public-transport schedules and parking prices can change. Recheck the responsible official source for travel-day decisions.
Primary answer

What is the Zurich Airport code?

ZRH is the IATA airport code for Zurich Airport. It is the identifier passengers normally see on flight bookings, boarding passes, baggage tags, airline timetables and airport searches.

The airport’s ICAO identifier is LSZH. That four-letter code is primarily relevant to pilots, flight planning and operational aviation systems rather than ordinary passenger bookings.

Departure planning

How early should you arrive at Zurich Airport?

Zurich Airport currently recommends arriving approximately two to three hours before departure as a general guide. Your specific airline, destination, baggage, document checks and current passenger volume can justify more or less time.

The airport says check-in begins at 04:00 at the earliest and ends at 22:00 at the latest, but individual airline counters can have narrower opening windows.

1

Start from scheduled departure

Work backward from the flight’s scheduled departure time using the airport’s general two-to-three-hour guidance.

2

Add baggage time

Checked baggage, sports equipment, pets or special items can require airline-counter processing even when you checked in online.

3

Add document checks

Certain destinations require in-person travel-document checks. Airline-specific rules matter more than a generic airport arrival formula.

4

Check the live flight page

Zurich Airport publishes recommended arrival information with individual departures when available.

Early flight: arriving extremely early does not guarantee your airline desk will already be open. Confirm the carrier’s check-in opening time first.
Airport layout

Check-in 1, Check-in 2 and Check-in 3 explained

Zurich Airport has several check-in areas inside one connected airport complex. Check-in 1, Check-in 2 and Check-in 3 are not separate terminals or airports.

The correct location is airline-specific. Many carriers support online check-in, baggage-tag printers or self-bag-drop, but the available combination depends on the airline and baggage type.

CI 1

Check-in 1

Major check-in area closest to parking P1. SWISS and several Lufthansa Group carriers currently publish facilities here.

CI 2

Check-in 2

Large passenger check-in area near parking P2. Some carriers use staffed counters while selected airlines also provide self bag drop.

CI 3

Check-in 3

Located close to the airport railway station and Airport Shopping. Parking P3 is the recommended car park for this area.

Early check-in and self bag drop

Early check-in is airline-specific. For example, current Zurich Airport pages for SWISS, Edelweiss and Austrian show early check-in availability up to 23 hours before departure during their applicable counter opening hours.

For those carriers, self-bag-drop options are currently published in Check-in 2 and Check-in 3, subject to boarding-pass and baggage restrictions. Do not assume another airline offers the same arrangement.

United States flights: Zurich Airport’s current SWISS and Edelweiss airline pages state that all travelers on their U.S.-bound flights must be physically present at check-in for document checks.
Airside orientation

Gate areas A, B, D and E at ZRH

After security, follow your boarding pass and live airport screens to the assigned gate. Zurich Airport’s passenger system uses gate areas A, B, D and E.

A

Gates A

Part of the main passenger complex and served by airport transfer facilities.

B

Gates B

Main gate area with transfer services and connections into the wider airside complex.

D

Gates D

Gate zone used in Zurich’s Schengen/non-Schengen passenger flows depending on the flight.

E

Gates E

Satellite gate building reached airside by Skymetro from the main passenger complex.

Do not drive to “Terminal E.” Gates E are reached after airport processing using the Skymetro. They are not a separate public-road check-in terminal.
Connections

Connecting at Zurich Airport

If you already have an onward boarding pass, Zurich Airport advises checking airport screens or the live website for your next gate. The airport states that the gate will be displayed at least 60 minutes before departure.

Transfer desks are located in all four major gate areas: A, B, D and E. Passengers without an onward boarding pass may be directed to a transfer desk or the departure gate depending on the airline.

1

Confirm the onward flight

Use the airport display rather than relying only on the gate printed on an older boarding pass.

2

Check whether bags are through-tagged

If your luggage is not checked to the final destination, you may have to leave transit, collect it and check in again.

3

Expect security when required

Whether transfer security is required depends partly on where the arriving flight originated.

4

Check Schengen status

Entering or leaving the Schengen area generally requires passport control.

Skymetro to Gates E

The Skymetro connects Gates A, B and D with Gates E in a few minutes without intermediate stops. Follow the airport signs; you do not need to go landside.

Separate-ticket connections: if baggage cannot be checked through, you may need enough time to enter Switzerland, collect bags, reach check-in and pass security again. A short scheduled layover can therefore be risky even at an efficient airport.
Major 2026 security change

ZRH liquid rules depend on whether your journey starts in Zurich

Since June 26, 2026, passengers whose journey begins at Zurich Airport may carry liquid containers with a capacity of up to 2 litres in hand baggage through the upgraded Security Control Building.

The new CT scanners mean liquids and electronic devices can remain inside cabin baggage at those upgraded local-departure screening lanes. Double-walled containers such as thermos bottles remain an exception and must be empty.

2L

Journey starts at ZRH

Containers up to 2 litres are currently permitted at the upgraded local-departure security checkpoints, subject to prohibited-item rules.

100ml

Transfer security

Transfer passengers clearing security at Zurich remain subject to the 100 ml container limit and resealable 1-litre bag rule until those transfer checkpoints are upgraded.

Power banks and batteries

Current Zurich Airport security guidance permits a maximum of two power banks up to 100 Wh each and up to 18 batteries up to 100 Wh each. They must be carried in hand baggage rather than checked baggage.

E-cigarettes, rechargeable batteries and spare batteries also belong in hand baggage under current airport guidance.

Connection trap: a bottle accepted when starting a trip at ZRH may not satisfy the transfer-security rule on a different itinerary or at another airport. Always consider the strictest checkpoint on your route.
Schengen

Passport control and e-gates at Zurich Airport

Switzerland participates in the Schengen area. At Zurich Airport, passengers who enter or leave Schengen generally pass passport control; passengers remaining within the Schengen travel area normally follow a different transfer flow.

Zurich Airport also uses automated passport-control e-gates for eligible passengers with biometric passports.

OUT

Automated departure

Current published eligibility includes travelers aged at least 18 who hold a biometric passport and meet the airport’s nationality or Swiss residence-permit criteria.

IN

Automated entry

Current Zurich Airport guidance sets the minimum age at 12 for eligible travelers with a biometric passport and the required nationality or Swiss residence status.

e-Gate eligibility is not entry permission. Passport-control technology does not replace visa, passport-validity or Swiss immigration requirements.
Train, tram and bus

Zurich Airport to Zürich city centre

Zurich Airport has a railway station directly beneath the airport complex. The airport states that trains toward Zürich Hauptbahnhof run about every 10 minutes and the journey takes roughly 15 minutes.

The rail station also provides direct connections deeper into Switzerland, so Zurich HB is not always the best place to change trains. Search your final destination before choosing a route.

SBB

Airport railway station

Located beneath Airport Shopping near Check-in 3. Use SBB for live platforms, ticket prices and disruption information.

10m

Frequent services

Airport guidance describes departures for Zurich Main Station about every ten minutes.

15m

City-centre journey

The published airport estimate is around 15 minutes to Zürich Hauptbahnhof.

Trams and buses

The airport is also integrated with Zurich’s regional public-transport network. The bus station sits directly above Check-in 3, and tram services connect the airport with surrounding districts and regional destinations.

Local tip: type the exact hotel, station or Swiss town into the SBB or ZVV journey planner. A direct airport train may save an unnecessary transfer through central Zurich.
Road transport

Taxi from Zurich Airport

Zurich Airport recommends official vehicles identified as Airport Taxi. Taxi ranks serve the arrival areas.

The airport currently gives an approximate price of around CHF 65 for a taxi to Zurich city centre. This is an estimate rather than a guaranteed flat fare for every address or traffic condition.

If price matters: confirm the destination and estimated cost with the driver before departure. Rail is generally the more predictable option for Zürich HB when you are traveling light.
Car parks

Zurich Airport parking: P1, P2, P3 and P4

The best car park depends on where you are going inside the airport. Zurich Airport recommends P1 for Check-in/Arrival 1, P2 for Check-in/Arrival 2, P3 for Check-in 3 and Airport Shopping, and P4 for The Circle.

Parking Best for Current visitor tariff Traveler note
P1 Check-in 1 / Arrival 1 Same standard P1–P4 short-stay tariff Good choice when meeting or accompanying someone in Arrival/Check-in 1.
P2 Check-in 2 / Arrival 2 Same standard P1–P4 short-stay tariff Useful for longer pickup/drop-off near Arrival/Check-in 2.
P3 Check-in 3 / Airport Shopping Same standard P1–P4 short-stay tariff Convenient for the railway-station side of the airport.
P4 The Circle Same standard P1–P4 short-stay tariff Airport recommendation for visitors to The Circle.

Published P1–P4 visitor prices

Current airport pricing lists CHF 2 for up to 15 minutes, CHF 4 up to 30 minutes, CHF 6 up to one hour, CHF 10 up to two hours and a one-day maximum of CHF 56. For passenger trips over 24 hours, check the dedicated passenger-parking booking products rather than applying the short-stay table indefinitely.

Rates can change. Zurich Airport explicitly reserves the right to change parking prices. Recheck the booking page before your trip.
Curbside rules

Zurich Airport pickup and drop-off fees

DROP

Departure drop-off

At Check-in 1 and 2, the Departure curbside lane currently gives the first 5 minutes free. After five minutes, the published charge is CHF 1 per minute.

If you need longer, the airport recommends P1 for Check-in 1 or P2 for Check-in 2. For Check-in 3, use P3.

PICK

Arrival pickup

Arrival 1 and Arrival 2 curbside access is charged from the start. The current price is CHF 4 for up to 5 minutes, CHF 8 up to 10 minutes and CHF 12 up to 15 minutes.

More than two entries into the arrival zones within two hours can trigger an additional CHF 50 charge plus the per-minute fee.

Avoid waiting at the curb. If the arriving passenger has not collected baggage yet, P1 or P2 is normally more practical than building up curbside charges.
Traveling with children

Family services at Zurich Airport

Zurich Airport provides dedicated family facilities for passengers traveling with children. The main Family Services room is in Passenger Area A and is free for families regardless of airline.

The airport makes clear that this is not a childcare service: children must remain with an accompanying adult.

BABY

Baby care

Changing tables, selected baby-care supplies, a quiet breastfeeding room, baby beds and a dining area with microwave are provided.

PLAY

Play space

Playrooms include toys, computer games and table football for older children.

5×

Kids Corners

The airport also lists five Kids Corner locations around the passenger areas.

The Gates A Family Services room currently publishes daily opening of approximately 06:00–20:30. Recheck before relying on staffed facilities for a very early or late flight.

Long layovers & overnight stays

Lounges, Transit Hotel, dayrooms and showers

Zurich Airport has several options for passengers who need more than a seat at the gate. The right choice depends on whether you are landside or airside, your gate area, airline status and whether you want a room, lounge or only a shower.

HOTEL

Transit Hotel & Dayrooms

Located in the Gates D passenger area. Rooms can be used overnight or by the hour, and a separate rest area offers loungers and lockers.

SHWR

Transit Hotel showers

Current published shower-only price is CHF 25, including a towel and body-care products. A hotel or lounger booking is not required.

CHF35

Radisson Blu showers

The Radisson Blu currently publishes shower-room access for CHF 35, with towel, hairdryer and toiletries included.

Airport lounges

Zurich Airport lists multiple lounge choices, including SWISS lounges, Aspire lounges, the Emirates Lounge, marhaba Lounge and Prime Class Lounge. Access conditions vary by airline cabin, status, membership or walk-in purchase.

AIR

Airside Center lounges

Options include SWISS lounges, Aspire and marhaba, depending on access eligibility and operating hours.

E

Gates E lounges

Gates E currently includes SWISS, Aspire, Emirates and Prime Class lounge options. Check location before purchasing access because changing gate areas can involve passport or transit routing.

Useful facilities

Wi-Fi, medical help, pharmacy and other useful services

WiFi

8 hours free Wi-Fi

Zurich Airport currently provides eight hours of free Wi-Fi. The eight-hour period runs continuously from first login.

MED

Medical services

Medical, dental and other health-related services are available in the airport area, including Airport Medical Center services and healthcare facilities at The Circle.

RX

Pharmacies

Amavita pharmacy locations are listed in Airport Shopping, the Airside Center and Check-in 1, with airport guidance indicating pharmacy service seven days a week.

How to connect to airport Wi-Fi

  1. Select the “Zurich Airport” Wi-Fi network.
  2. Register by SMS, or obtain an access code using your boarding pass and ID at a Wi-Fi station or information desk.
  3. Accept the terms and open the internet connection.

Wi-Fi registration stations are available in both landside and airside locations, including check-in areas, arrivals, gate areas and baggage claim.

Accessibility

Reduced-mobility travel at Zurich Airport

Zurich Airport publishes dedicated facilities for passengers with reduced mobility. Routes between the airport railway station, check-in and arrival halls are barrier-free and include tactile guidance for visually impaired travelers.

If you require assistance through the airport or to the aircraft, arrange it through your airline in advance and follow the airport’s designated assistance meeting-point instructions.

RAIL

Barrier-free station access

The route from the airport railway station to check-in and arrivals is published as barrier-free.

P

Accessible parking

Dedicated accessible spaces are currently listed in P1, P2, P3, P4 and P6.

BUS

Bus station access

The airport bus station is directly above Check-in 3 with tactile route markings for visually impaired passengers.

Regular caregivers and drivers: Zurich Airport offers an application-based electronic parking permit for people who regularly drop off or collect disabled passengers, allowing eligible 30-minute curbside use under the published scheme.
Lost bags & belongings

Who to contact when something is missing

Zurich Airport makes an important distinction between checked baggage or items left on an aircraft and property lost inside the airport.

What happened? First contact What to prepare
Checked bag did not arrive Airline / its ground-handling company Boarding pass, baggage-tag receipt and flight number.
Checked bag was damaged Airline / baggage handler Bag tag, flight details and photographs where useful.
Item left on aircraft Airline Seat number, flight number and detailed item description.
Item lost inside airport Zurich Airport Lost & Found Location, approximate time and identifying detail.
Item lost on train / station SBB Lost and Found Train, route, time and item description.
Troubleshooting

Common ZRH travel problems and what to do

Your booking form rejects LSZH

Use ZRH. LSZH is the ICAO identifier, while commercial passenger booking systems normally expect the IATA code.

You do not know whether to use Check-in 1, 2 or 3

Open Zurich Airport’s airline directory or the live departure. Check-in assignments are airline-specific.

You arrived more than three hours early

Check the airline counter opening time. Zurich Airport’s general arrival recommendation does not mean every check-in desk operates all day.

Your gate says E

Follow airside signs to Skymetro. Gates E are not reached from a separate public-road terminal.

Your transfer liquid is larger than 100 ml

Do not rely on the local ZRH 2-litre rule. Transfer security currently retains the 100 ml / 1-litre-bag restriction.

Your checked bag is missing

Contact your airline or baggage handler, not the general airport Lost & Found office.

You are collecting someone whose flight is delayed

Do not wait at the charged arrivals curb. Use P1 or P2 until the passenger is actually ready for pickup.

You have a long overnight connection

Check Transit Hotel & Dayrooms availability rather than assuming unrestricted sleeping arrangements around gate seating.

You lost something on the airport train

Use SBB Lost and Found rather than Zurich Airport Lost & Found because rail property is handled separately.

Your destination is outside Zurich

Search the final city in SBB before automatically traveling to Zürich HB; direct airport trains may be available.
