Hong Kong airport code: HKG, VHHH and travel info
Use HKG when booking normal passenger flights to Hong Kong International Airport. This guide also explains VHHH, Terminal 1 versus Terminal 2, Airport Express travel, security, immigration, parking and transfers.
What is the Hong Kong airport code?
The airport code most passengers need is HKG. It identifies Hong Kong International Airport, the major commercial airport at Chek Lap Kok.
The four-letter aviation identifier is VHHH. Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department’s aeronautical information uses VHHH for Hong Kong International Airport; airline booking sites, baggage tags and most passenger-facing searches normally use HKG.
Airport live checks & travel tools
Use current local conditions, official live-status links and planning calculators before you travel. Airline gate, terminal and flight times can change; your carrier remains the final source for flight-specific details.
Live flight center
Check the airport's official flight board, then confirm any last-minute gate or timing change with the airline.
Current airport-area weather
Useful for planning your trip to the airport. This is model-based local weather, not an aviation METAR or an airline operational forecast.
Quick official checks
Open the source that matches the decision you are making right now.
When should I reach the airport?
A planning estimate based on flight type and common time buffers. Always increase the buffer for severe weather, major holidays, unusual airport alerts or airline instructions.
Connection-risk checker
This is a planning heuristic, not an airline minimum-connection-time rule. International arrivals that require U.S. entry processing, baggage claim and security can need substantially more time.
Parking cost estimator
Uses the airport-specific rates stored in this article's configuration. Rates can change; verify availability and final pricing on the official parking page before driving in.
Passenger pickup readiness
Landing time is not curb-ready time. Add time for taxiing, deplaning, baggage claim, customs when applicable and walking to the correct pickup zone.
Check these official HKIA pages before leaving
HKG and VHHH are stable identifiers, but the operational details that affect your trip are not. Check the operating airline, departure terminal, check-in aisle, gate and flight status again on travel day.
Hong Kong Airport Terminal 1 vs Terminal 2
HKIA now uses Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 for passenger departure processing. Terminal 2’s new departure facilities opened on May 27, 2026, and airlines using T2 can check passengers in, accept baggage and process security and immigration there.
The detail that matters most after check-in is that current boarding gates remain in Terminal 1. A passenger who completes departure processing in T2 takes the airside Automated People Mover to the appropriate boarding area in T1.
Terminal 1
T1 remains a major check-in terminal and contains the airport’s current boarding gate areas, including the Midfield and Satellite concourses reached by the appropriate airside connection.
Terminal 2
T2 handles check-in and departure processing for designated airlines. After security and immigration, passengers continue by Automated People Mover to T1 for the boarding gate.
How to depart from HKG without getting caught by the T1/T2 change
Start with your airline’s current terminal rather than assuming every departure begins in T1. Keep your valid travel document, booking confirmation or ticket and any required visa documentation ready before check-in.
Confirm your airline and terminal
Use the HKIA departure board or airline directory. This is especially important because some airline check-in services now operate in Terminal 2.
Check in and drop baggage
HKIA offers airline counters plus participating self-service options. Follow the airline’s instructions if a kiosk cannot read your passport or booking.
Pass security screening
Prepare cabin liquids correctly, keep restricted articles out of your baggage and follow instructions at the screening channel.
Complete departure immigration
Eligible passengers may use automated channels. Assisted and Courtesy Channels are available for travellers who qualify for additional assistance.
Go to the correct boarding gate
If you processed through T2, use the airside Automated People Mover to T1. HKIA advises passengers to reach their boarding gate at least 30 minutes before scheduled departure.
HKG security: liquids, power banks and smart screening
HKIA’s published liquids, aerosols and gels rule requires each hand-baggage container to be 100 ml or less. The containers must fit in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of 1 litre or less, with one such bag permitted per passenger.
Medication, baby milk or food and special dietary items can have exemptions subject to verification. Airline and destination requirements can also differ, so check your carrier when carrying unusual medical, dietary or duty-free items.
100 ml containers
Standard cabin LAG containers must not exceed 100 ml each.
One-litre bag
Standard liquids must fit comfortably inside the permitted resealable bag.
Power banks
HKIA states that spare lithium batteries and portable power banks must not be placed in checked baggage.
Immigration, baggage and customs after landing at HKG
Visitors should have a valid travel document ready for immigration. Hong Kong’s Immigration Department states that visitors are not required to complete an arrival or departure card for immigration examination.
After immigration, follow the flight-information displays to the assigned baggage carousel. After collecting baggage, proceed through customs; use the red channel when you have goods that require declaration and the green channel when you have nothing to declare.
Immigration
Present the required identity or travel document and follow the channel applicable to you.
Baggage reclaim
Use the terminal display to confirm the carousel assigned to your arriving flight.
Customs
Choose the correct declaration channel before entering the public arrivals area.
Airport Express from HKG to Hong Kong, Kowloon and Tsing Yi
Airport Express is the quickest rail option between HKIA and central Hong Kong. Under the MTR timetable effective September 13, 2026, the scheduled journey from Airport Station to Hong Kong Station is about 24 minutes.
| Airport Express trip | Scheduled journey time | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Airport → Hong Kong | About 24 minutes | Useful for Central and Hong Kong Island connections. |
| Airport → Kowloon | About 22 minutes | Useful for Kowloon-side destinations and onward transport. |
| Airport → Tsing Yi | About 14 minutes | Useful for interchange with other MTR routes. |
The same timetable lists the first Airport Express train from the airport toward the city at 05:54 and the last at 00:48. Treat these as current published times, not permanent promises; check MTR again on the day you travel.

Fast rail link to Tsing Yi, Kowloon and Hong Kong stations.
Public buses
HKIA is served by public bus routes covering many districts. Check the current route that best fits your final destination.
Taxis
Taxi service is available from the airport. Follow HKIA signage to the official taxi pickup area rather than accepting unsolicited rides.
Parking at Hong Kong International Airport
HKIA publishes current space information for its passenger car parks, including Car Parks 1, 3 and 4. Because availability changes continuously, this article does not reproduce a supposedly live vacancy number.
If a long-term parking area is close to full, airport guidance warns that drivers may be diverted to another car park. Build extra time into a departure-day drive rather than planning to arrive at the exact minimum check-in time.
Transferring through Hong Kong International Airport
If you already hold your onward boarding pass, follow the airport’s transfer signs to the departures level and complete transfer security before proceeding to your boarding gate.
If you do not have an onward boarding pass, check your airline’s transfer-desk location and obtain the boarding pass before following the route to departure screening. Do not assume that the gate printed early in your journey will remain unchanged.
Already have onward boarding pass
Follow transfer/departure signs, complete the required security screening and continue to the current boarding gate.
No onward boarding pass
Go to the airline’s designated transfer desk first, obtain your boarding pass and then continue through the required screening route.
Accessibility and special-needs help at HKG
HKIA provides barrier-free facilities for passengers with reduced mobility and travellers with visual or hearing impairments. The airport’s published facilities include accessible routes, tactile guidance, help phones, wide immigration channels and Courtesy Channels for eligible passengers.
Passengers who need wheelchair assistance can pre-book the complimentary service through their airline or travel agent. With advance arrangements, assistance can begin at an agreed airport location such as the terminal kerbside, Airport Express platform or check-in counter.
Wheelchair assistance
Arrange it with the airline or travel agent before travel where possible.
Accessible routing
Tactile guidance, ramps, lifts and accessible service points are available in relevant terminal areas.
Courtesy Channel
Dedicated security and immigration routing is available for qualifying passengers with special needs.

Official sources used for this HKG airport guide
The airport-code and aerodrome facts were checked against Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department aeronautical information. Passenger procedures, Terminal 2 routing, security, accessibility, transfers and parking were checked against Airport Authority Hong Kong. Immigration guidance was checked against the Hong Kong Immigration Department, while Airport Express timings were checked against MTR.
Use HKG for the airport, then verify the live trip details
For normal passenger travel, remember the simple answer: HKG is Hong Kong International Airport and VHHH is its ICAO identifier. The part that needs a fresh check is everything operational around that code—your T1 or T2 check-in point, boarding gate, flight status, transport service and parking conditions.
