Cincinnati airport code meaning

What airport is CVG, and where did the CVG code come from?

CVG is the IATA code and FAA location identifier for Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. The aviation ICAO identifier is KCVG. Passenger tickets, baggage tags and airline searches normally use CVG; pilots, dispatchers and aviation-weather systems more often use KCVG.

The commonly documented origin of CVG is Covington, Kentucky, the major nearby Northern Kentucky city associated with the airport when commercial service began. That history explains why the code is not “CIN.” The modern passenger terminal itself is in Hebron, Kentucky.

IATA / FAA

CVG — the code most travelers use.

ICAO

Serves

Cincinnati metro and the broader Ohio–Kentucky–Indiana region.

Physical terminal

Hebron, Kentucky, United States.

Search shortcut: “Cincinnati airport code,” “CVG airport code USA,” “CVG airport code city” and “CVG airport code country” all point to the same passenger airport. For driving, use the Hebron terminal address—not the word “Covington” alone.
CVG airport location, city, state and country

Why “Cincinnati Airport” is physically in Hebron, Kentucky

CVG’s passenger terminal address is 3087 Terminal Dr, Hebron, KY 41048. The airport says it is about 13 miles south of downtown Cincinnati in Northern Kentucky. So a ticket can correctly say Cincinnati while your rental-car receipt, GPS and hotel shuttle say Kentucky.

GPS

Use this for navigation

3087 Terminal Dr, Hebron, KY 41048. Search “CVG Airport” or the full official airport name rather than “Cincinnati airport” alone.

CITY

Why FAA says Covington

FAA aerodrome data associates CVG with Covington and places the reference point about eight miles southwest of Covington. This is aviation-reference geography, not the current passenger terminal street address.

MAIL

Do not confuse mailing and physical addresses

CVG’s administrative mailing address uses Cincinnati, Ohio. For driving, pickups and rental returns, use the Hebron, Kentucky terminal address.

Loading Eastern Time…

CVG uses the same clock as Cincinnati and New York: Eastern Time.

Eastern Daylight Time is UTC−4 during daylight-saving months; Eastern Standard Time is UTC−5 in standard time. The live clock on this page uses the browser’s America/New_York time-zone database so it changes automatically.

Flight-date trap: always read the departure time shown by the airline for CVG local time. This matters if you created calendar alerts in another time zone or are connecting from Arizona, Hawaii or overseas.

CVG Terminal and Concourses A/B: exact walking, train and baggage-claim logic

CVG uses one passenger Terminal. All airline ticketing and checked-bag acceptance happens on the Ticketing level. After the central TSA checkpoint, you descend into the Transportation Tunnel, where you can use the train, moving walkways or walk to Concourses A and B.

AreaCurrent layoutUseful distance / time

After baggage claim: choose the correct exit before you start walking

CURB

Private pickup

Use the front exits and the outer curb for regular passenger pickup. The curb is for active loading—not waiting.

EAST

Ground Transport East

Rideshare, taxi, TANK public transit, shared-ride vans, limos and charter buses.

WEST

Ground Transport West

Rental Car Center, hotel shuttles, ValuPark/Economy shuttles, off-airport parking and CVG Valet.

Gate-change rule: if you are already post-security, do not return to baggage claim merely to switch between A and B. Stay in the secure Transportation Tunnel unless your itinerary specifically requires landside baggage or airline assistance.
Current multiyear modernization

Elevate CVG: what 2026 terminal work means for passengers

Current program

Elevate CVG is the airport’s active multiyear terminal-modernization program. CVG says travelers will see renovated restrooms, more space for movement and refreshed passenger spaces, while behind-the-scenes operating systems are also being replaced or upgraded.

Expect temporary routing changes

Construction barriers, work zones and pedestrian paths may shift. Follow same-day airport signs even when they differ from an older screenshot or travel blog.

Do not confuse it with the 2050 Master Plan

Elevate CVG is an active terminal program. The 2050 Master Plan is long-range planning context for future facilities and campus development.

Keep a little walking margin

If you need wheelchair help, have small children or are meeting a tight connection, a few extra minutes protects against temporary detours.

Connections

Connecting between Concourse A and B

Check the onward gate firstLook for A or B on the airport/airline display. Gate assignments can change after landing.
Stay post-securityUse the Transportation Tunnel, train or moving walkways. Do not exit toward Baggage Claim unless you need landside services or bag collection.
Use the train when time or mobility mattersThe train is the easiest option for many travelers with luggage, kids or tight connections.
Add gate walkingThe tunnel time is not the full connection. CVG lists up to roughly four minutes from the center of Concourse A to its furthest gate and about three minutes in Concourse B.
Separate-ticket warning: if you must collect checked bags and check in again, you will leave the secure area and need to clear TSA again. Your second airline’s check-in cutoff still applies.

Airport arrivalAt least 2 hours before scheduled departureCVG travel guidance uses about 3 hours for international departures; airline rules override.
TSA PreCheck Touchless IDAvailable for eligible enrolled travelers on participating airlinesConfirm eligibility in your airline/TSA profile; it is not automatic for every PreCheck traveler.
TSA ConfirmIDFrom Feb. 1, 2026 for travelers who do not present acceptable ID, including non-REAL-ID-compliant state IDExpect extra identity-verification time; bring acceptable ID whenever possible.
TSA Cares855-787-2227Contact ahead when screening assistance is needed; TSA commonly recommends about 72 hours.
Ultra-early flight trap: an open TSA checkpoint does not mean your airline is accepting checked bags yet. CVG’s own travel tips note some carriers may not begin bag acceptance until around two hours before departure. Check both airline counter/bag-drop timing and security hours.
International arrivals and departures

What “International” means at CVG—and what happens on arrival

CVG supports scheduled international passenger service, but the code itself does not tell you the customs process. International arrivals follow U.S. Customs and Border Protection procedures and CVG’s secure routing.

CBP

Processing-area privacy

CVG’s step-by-step guide says cameras, cell phones and recording devices are not permitted in the international processing area until you are cleared.

TSA

Rescreening

The same guide states arriving international customers complete TSA screening before entering the concourse used by departing domestic flights.

3.4

Liquids after arrival

Liquids over 3.4 oz must go into checked luggage before TSA rescreening when the process applies. Follow CBP/TSA directions for duty-free items.

Connection rule: do not copy a domestic connection time estimate onto an international arrival. Immigration/customs, baggage handling and TSA rescreening can make the process materially longer.
Parking at Cincinnati Airport

CVG parking rates, reservations, EV charging and the hidden booking details

If you reserve online, know these rules before paying

$1.99 booking fee

CVG’s online booking terms say the quoted purchase price includes a $1.99 booking fee.

Use the confirmation QR code

The reservation confirmation includes a QR code used for entry and exit. Go to the facility named in the reservation before assuming the code is broken.

Cancellation/edit window

The current booking FAQ says you can edit or cancel up to 2 hours before the booked start time. Later cancellation may not be refunded.

Overstay costs extra

If you exit after the reserved end time, additional parking charges are due by credit card at exit.

A reservation protects facility access

If the facility shows full/closed to drive-up customers, CVG says a valid reservation still reserves access for the booked stay.

Shuttle tracking

CVG links BusGenius for ValuPark and Economy shuttle tracking; use it instead of guessing shelter wait time.

EV charging is slow Level 1—not a fast charger

The current parking page lists 8 stations in Terminal Garage Level D, Row 30 and 4 in ValuPark Row 1. They are 120V / 20A Level 1 chargers, first-come, not individually reservable, and the parking FAQ says a full charge can take about eight hours. There are currently no chargers in Economy Lot.

Pickup and meeting passengers

CVG pickup: outer curb, Cell Phone Lot, Meeting Point or rideshare?

Private-car curb

Regular passenger pickup uses the outer curb. Use it only when the traveler is physically ready for loading.

Cell Phone Lot

Free waiting area at 3401 Loomis Rd, Hebron, KY 41048. Wait here instead of circling the terminal.

Meeting Point

The lower Terminal level is the better choice if you want to park and greet someone indoors before they head toward baggage claim.

Uber / Lyft

Use Ground Transport East, not the regular private-car curb. Follow current app and airport signage.

Cell Phone Lot exit sequence

CVG’s current directions say to exit the lot toward Hotel Drive, turn right onto Terminal Drive, then follow Baggage Claim signs. The airport also warns that development activity around the Global Logistics Park can affect the lot entrance/exit area, so use extra caution.

Best sequence: flight lands → passenger reaches assigned carousel → bags arrive → passenger reaches the outer curb → passenger texts the exact pickup position → driver leaves the Cell Phone Lot. Scheduled landing time alone is not pickup-ready time.
Ground transportation

Ground Transport East vs West: the CVG rule worth memorizing

CVG’s transportation center is easier when you decide East or West before following signs from baggage claim.

After midnight: CVG warns that commercial ground transportation can be limited for walk-up customers after 12 a.m. A late arrival is a reason to prearrange—not a reason to assume a taxi or van queue will be staffed.
Public transit to Cincinnati

TANK Route 2X Airporter: fare, payment, pickup and schedule reality

The TANK 2X Airporter connects CVG with Cincinnati. At the airport, follow signs from Baggage Claim to Ground Transport East → Public Transit. The current timetable shows roughly 30-minute service through much of the day, but road projects and detours can change stops.

Current local cash fare

$2. Have exact fare; buses do not give cash change.

Mobile payment

Use Transit with EZFare to plan, track and pay from a phone.

Frequency

Current 2X schedule is around 30 minutes for much of the service day.

Current alert

TANK is displaying a Brent Spence Corridor Project service alert; verify downtown stops before boarding.

Tap & Save can matter if you will keep using TANK after the airport ride

TANK’s current account-based Tap & Save program automatically caps fixed-route spending at $4 per day or $70 per month when you pay through a funded Transit/EZFare account or registered EZFare smart card. Once the cap is reached, additional eligible fixed-route rides in that period are free. This is different from simply paying the $2 cash fare for one airport trip.

Cash is still accepted onboard, and TANK’s published local cash fare is $2; exact fare is required because the farebox does not make change. The regular fare page also lists a $4 TANK day pass and a $5 Metro/TANK day pass. Choose the payment method based on how much transit you will actually use after reaching Cincinnati.

Airport-use shortcut: one simple 2X ride → $2 cash can be enough. Multiple TANK rides the same day → Tap & Save can reach its $4 daily cap automatically. If you will also ride Cincinnati Metro, compare the current Metro/TANK pass rules before buying.
Rental cars

CVG rental cars are connected to the Terminal—do not wait for a shuttle

CVG’s Rental Car Center is physically connected to the passenger Terminal. After collecting baggage, follow signs to Ground Transport West and continue to the Rental Car Center. The current rental-center address is 3057 Terminal Drive, Hebron, KY 41048.

If you just landed

Collect bags first, follow Ground Transport West, then follow the rental company’s counter/garage directions in your reservation. There is no airport rental-car shuttle step.

If you are a local renter and not flying

CVG says there is no personal-vehicle parking at the Rental Car Center. Use an airport parking option first, then walk or shuttle to Ground Transport West based on that facility.

Departure planning: even without a shuttle, allow return time for fuel, vehicle inspection, elevators/walking to ticketing and any rental-company queue. “Connected to Terminal” does not mean “zero minutes.”
Accessible travel

CVG accessibility: GoodMaps, Aira, ASL, Sunflower and wheelchair help

Use the right service for the right stage: the airline handles boarding and aircraft-related wheelchair assistance; TSA Cares supports screening; CVG provides airport navigation, communication and facility-access resources.

MAP

GoodMaps indoor navigation

Turn-by-turn indoor guidance can provide audio directions, visual routing and step-free paths across the Terminal and concourses.

AIRA

Aira visual interpretation

CVG lists Aira for blind/low-vision travelers who want professional visual interpretation while navigating airport tasks.

ASL

ASL and language support

Information booths have interpreter access; CVG also lists Signapse, Aira ASL Connect and a process for requesting in-person ASL interpretation.

SUN

Hidden Disabilities Sunflower

Lanyards can be requested through CVG Customer Experience / the Baggage Claim information booth. The symbol requests patience; it is not a security fast pass.

AIR

Wheelchair before travel

Contact the operating airline in advance and describe whether you need curb-to-counter, gate transfer, boarding or aircraft-seat assistance.

NOW

Wheelchair after arriving at CVG

If you are already at the airport, Bags, Inc. provides no-cost wheelchair assistance at 513-607-3218. It is based on the first floor of the Rental Car Center and can meet you on any Terminal/Rental Center level.

The $1.2 billion five-year capital plan explains why travelers see investment

The same CVG fact sheet lists a $1.2B five-year capital plan. That figure is useful passenger context when combined with the active Elevate CVG modernization program: investment is not just a future master-plan idea; active Terminal improvements are already underway.

Why the 7,000+ acre figure does not describe your walking distance

The fact sheet lists 7,000+ acres of airport property and major cargo operations, including Amazon Air and DHL. Your passenger journey remains concentrated in the one Terminal and Concourses A/B. The enormous campus figure should not be interpreted as the size of the passenger walking route.

Dated-source rule: February’s “55+” and July’s current “60” are not contradictory when dated correctly. Route networks change. For booking, the current destination/airline page wins over the older PDF snapshot.

Official sources, PDF handling and internal-link policy

This guide prioritizes CVG Airport, FAA, TSA and TANK. Time-sensitive claims are dated and paired with the relevant live official page after the explanation. We do not invent security waits, open parking counts, gate assignments or provider availability.

Internal-link audit: the Airport-Guides.org post-sitemap endpoint did not surface reliably through the current web index during this refresh. No internal article URL is guessed. Add contextual internal links only after the live sitemap exposes a verified matching post URL.
