ARN Airport Code: Stockholm Arlanda Travel Info
ARN is the IATA airport code for Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden’s main international gateway for the Stockholm region. This guide explains the code, terminals, security, transfers, trains, buses, taxis, parking and practical travel-day details.
What airport is ARN?
ARN identifies Stockholm Arlanda Airport in Sweden.
ARN is the three-letter IATA code for Stockholm Arlanda Airport. This is the code most passengers see in airline booking tools, boarding passes, flight-status searches and baggage labels.
Airport live checks & travel tools
Use current local conditions, official live-status links and planning calculators before you travel. Airline gate, terminal and flight times can change; your carrier remains the final source for flight-specific details.
Live flight center
Check the airport's official flight board, then confirm any last-minute gate or timing change with the airline.
Current airport-area weather
Useful for planning your trip to the airport. This is model-based local weather, not an aviation METAR or an airline operational forecast.
Quick official checks
Open the source that matches the decision you are making right now.
When should I reach the airport?
A planning estimate based on flight type and common time buffers. Always increase the buffer for severe weather, major holidays, unusual airport alerts or airline instructions.
Connection-risk checker
This is a planning heuristic, not an airline minimum-connection-time rule. International arrivals that require U.S. entry processing, baggage claim and security can need substantially more time.
Parking cost estimator
Uses the airport-specific rates stored in this article's configuration. Rates can change; verify availability and final pricing on the official parking page before driving in.
Passenger pickup readiness
Landing time is not curb-ready time. Add time for taxiing, deplaning, baggage claim, customs when applicable and walking to the correct pickup zone.
The four-letter aviation identifier is ESSA. ICAO identifiers are mainly relevant to air traffic, flight planning, aviation weather and technical aviation systems; most airline passengers only need ARN.
ARN, STO, BMA, NYO and VST: what is the difference?
Stockholm travel searches can show several codes. ARN is a specific physical airport. STO is a metropolitan code used by some booking systems to search across Stockholm-area airports rather than identify one terminal complex.
| Code | Airport or code type | What it means for travelers |
|---|---|---|
| ARN | Stockholm Arlanda Airport | The airport covered by this guide and Stockholm’s principal international gateway. |
| STO | Stockholm metropolitan code | Search code that can represent multiple Stockholm-area airports. It is not one airport building. |
| BMA | Bromma Stockholm Airport | A separate airport. Do not travel to Arlanda if your ticket says BMA. |
| NYO | Stockholm Skavsta Airport | Separate airport near Nyköping with different ground-transport planning. |
| VST | Stockholm Västerås Airport | Separate airport west of Stockholm. |
Where is Stockholm Arlanda Airport?
Stockholm Arlanda Airport is north of Stockholm. Swedavia places the airport approximately 42 km from central Stockholm and approximately 36 km from central Uppsala.
The official airport address is Stockholm Arlanda Airport, 190 45 Stockholm-Arlanda, Sweden. Drivers from central Stockholm generally use the E4 northbound and follow airport signs; from Uppsala, use the E4 southbound toward Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
From Stockholm
Approximately 42 km from central Stockholm.
From Uppsala
Approximately 36 km from central Uppsala.
Airport access
The airport itself is open 24 hours a day, although individual services have their own opening times.
Main road
The E4 is the principal road link from Stockholm and Uppsala.
Stockholm Arlanda terminals: what travelers need to know
Terminal 2 and Terminal 5 are the main passenger terminal areas in the current configuration.
Your terminal is determined by the operating airline and flight, not simply whether the trip is domestic or international. Always check the airline itinerary and Swedavia departure board before travelling.
Terminal 2
Terminal 2 has active airline check-in, baggage handling, security screening and gate facilities. Some domestic and international flights operate here.
Former Terminal 4
The former Terminal 4 passenger gate area is now Gate Area C within Terminal 5. Older transport pages and signs may still refer to Terminal 4 or Arlanda South in connection with rail and bus stops.
Terminal 5
Terminal 5 is Arlanda’s largest passenger terminal area and contains several gate zones, the Marketplace, major international facilities and the newer 5F security control.
How to verify your terminal
Find the operating airline
If the ticket is a codeshare, the airline selling the ticket may differ from the carrier operating the aircraft. Use the operating carrier when checking airport information.
Open the live departure listing
Use Swedavia’s departure page to confirm the current terminal and flight status.
Check again before leaving
Terminal and gate assignments can change. Airline messages and airport displays on travel day take priority over an older screenshot or guide.
What to do when departing from ARN
There is no single arrival-at-airport time that is correct for every flight. Airline check-in and bag-drop deadlines, passport control, baggage, security, time of day and terminal walking distance all affect how early you should arrive.
Confirm the flight and terminal
Check the operating airline, terminal, flight number and current departure status before travelling to the airport.
Complete check-in
Use your airline’s online check-in where available. If online or self-service check-in does not work, use the airline’s staffed counter.
Print and attach bag tags if required
Self-service machines in departure areas and SkyCity can print baggage tags for participating airlines. Attach the tag securely and keep the baggage receipt.
Use the correct Bag Drop
Follow the airline or screen instructions to the correct Bag Drop zone. Special baggage normally requires additional handling.
Go through security
Security preparation differs between Terminal 2 and Terminal 5, so follow the rules displayed for your checkpoint.
Allow for border control where applicable
Flights leaving the Schengen Area may require passport control after security. Do not treat the security queue as the final time requirement before reaching the gate.
Go to the gate early
Boarding closes before the scheduled departure time. Follow the airline’s boarding time rather than waiting for the published departure time.
ARN security rules: Terminal 2 vs Terminal 5
Arlanda uses different screening technology in Terminal 2 and Terminal 5. This affects how liquids and electronic devices are presented at security.
| Security rule | Terminal 2 | Terminal 5 New 5F |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid container size | Maximum 100 ml per container. | Maximum 100 ml per container. |
| Liquid bag | Liquids are presented separately in the required one-litre transparent bag. | 100 ml containers can remain in hand baggage and do not need to be placed in a one-litre bag. |
| Electronics | Follow checkpoint instructions; larger electronics may need separate presentation. | Electronic devices can remain inside hand baggage at the newer checkpoint. |
| Outerwear / pockets | Remove outer clothing and empty loose metal items as directed. | Remove outer clothing and empty loose metal items as directed. |
| Fast Track | Available for eligible passengers. | Available for eligible passengers. |
Terminal 2 security hours
Swedavia currently lists the Terminal 2 security checkpoint as open daily 04:00–21:00.
Terminal 5 New 5F hours
Swedavia currently lists New 5F as open daily 03:45–22:00. For flights before 05:00, the checkpoint opens two hours before departure.
Passport, ID, visas and Schengen travel at ARN
Your document requirements depend on nationality, destination, airline rules and whether your journey crosses a Schengen external border. Airport staff cannot replace an embassy, immigration authority or airline when deciding whether your documentation is sufficient.
Travel within Schengen
There is normally no routine border check in connection with travel between Schengen countries, but an airline can still require a valid passport or accepted national ID.
Travel outside Schengen / EU
Passport control applies where required. For travel outside the EU, Swedavia advises passengers to be able to present a valid passport.
Visa requirements
Visa rules depend on your nationality and destination. Confirm requirements with the destination country’s embassy or responsible immigration authority before travel.
EU Entry/Exit System
Swedavia states that the EU Entry/Exit System was introduced at external EU/Schengen borders beginning October 12, 2025. It does not apply in the same way to EU citizens. Non-EU travelers crossing applicable external borders should allow for the border process and follow Swedish Police and EU guidance.
Checked bags, hand baggage and special baggage at ARN
Hand-baggage size and weight limits are set by the airline, not by Arlanda. Check your carrier’s allowance before travel, especially if your fare includes only a small personal item.
Self-service bag tags
For participating airlines, machines in SkyCity or departure halls can print baggage tags. Attach the tag securely and keep the baggage receipt until your trip is complete.
Bag Drop
After tagging a checked bag, use the Bag Drop zone shown by your airline or airport screens. A staffed desk may be required when self-service is unavailable.
Special baggage
Examples include skis, golf bags, bicycles, musical instruments, wheelchairs and bags with unusual dimensions or loose straps.
Swedavia notes that some special baggage may need to be pre-booked with the airline at least 24 hours before the flight. The exact rule depends on the airline, so confirm before arrival.
Delayed or missing checked baggage
If a checked bag does not arrive, contact the airline’s baggage service or the ground-handling company acting for the airline. Swedavia does not have access to individual airline baggage-tracing records.
How transfers between Terminal 2 and Terminal 5 work
Transfers depend on whether you are before or after security, whether your journey is within Schengen, and whether you need passport control or baggage collection.
Before security
Arlanda Express runs between Arlanda South and Arlanda North. Swedavia states that the terminal-to-terminal train journey takes about one minute and is free when used between the airport terminal stations.
After security
Swedavia provides transfer buses for qualifying connections between Terminal 2 and Terminal 5. Schengen and non-Schengen transfers use different stops, so follow the signs for your itinerary.
Schengen airside transfer
Swedavia currently lists the Schengen transfer bus stops at Gate 61C in Terminal 2, Transfer Gate T11 in the corridor connecting Gate Area C with the rest of Terminal 5, and Gate F5 in Terminal 5. The service is manned daily, and passengers request pickup using the button at the transfer stop.
Non-Schengen transfer
For relevant non-Schengen connections, different transfer-bus stops are used. Swedavia currently describes routes between Terminal 5 gate areas and Terminal 2, including a Terminal 2 stop around Gate 70. Follow current airport signs because operating stops and times can change.
How to get from ARN to Stockholm, Uppsala and beyond
Arlanda has express rail, commuter rail, long-distance trains, airport buses, local buses, taxis and rental cars. The right option depends on destination, departure time, baggage, price and how much walking or transferring you want.
Arlanda Express
Swedavia describes the non-stop Arlanda Express journey between Stockholm Central and Arlanda as approximately 18 minutes.
Airport stations are Arlanda South and Arlanda North.
Commuter trains
SL commuter services connect Arlanda Central with Stockholm and Uppsala. Arlanda Central is in SkyCity.
Long-distance rail
Long-distance trains operated by rail companies such as SJ or Vy also serve Arlanda Central, useful for destinations beyond Stockholm.
Which station should you use?
| Service | Airport station / stop | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Arlanda Express | Arlanda South and Arlanda North | Fast non-stop connection to Stockholm Central. |
| SL commuter train | Arlanda Central, SkyCity | Stockholm and Uppsala public-transport connections. |
| Long-distance train | Arlanda Central, SkyCity | Direct or connecting journeys to regional Swedish destinations. |
| Airport buses | Stops vary by operator, including Terminal 5 and SkyCity | Alternative central Stockholm and regional connections. |
| Taxi | Approved taxi ranks at Terminals 2 and 5 | Door-to-door travel, groups, heavy baggage or late arrivals. |
Airport buses
Several bus companies serve Arlanda, including airport-coach and regional services. Exact stops and timetables vary by operator, so check the current airport bus page and the operator before travel.
Taxis
Taxis operate from Terminal 2 and Terminal 5. Swedavia strongly recommends using signs for Approved Taxi and choosing a taxi company contracted with the airport.
Taxi pricing in Sweden is not universally fixed. Swedavia-contracted airport taxis operate under specific airport conditions, while journeys beyond defined fare zones can use meter pricing. Ask the driver what price applies before the trip and keep the taxi-meter receipt.
Parking, pickup and drop-off at Stockholm Arlanda
Swedavia provides short-term, express and long-term airport parking. Parking prices can vary by parking product, booking period and demand, so use the official booking tool for the dates of your trip rather than relying on an old quoted rate.
Pre-book parking
Advance booking can be useful for comparing airport parking products and securing the option you want. Pre-book rates are not necessarily the same as drive-up prices.
Terminal 2 pickup
Follow road signs for Terminal 2 Pick up & Drop off. Nearby short-stay parking is also available.
Terminal 5 pickup
Follow signs for Terminal 5 Pick up & Drop off. Swedavia says the pickup car park is approximately 50–100 metres from Terminal 5.
When should a driver arrive for pickup?
Swedavia advises drivers not to arrive too early. Its current pickup guidance suggests approximately 30 minutes after landing for flights arriving from within Europe and around 45 minutes after landing for flights arriving from outside Europe as planning guidance, because baggage and border formalities take time.
This is not a guarantee that a passenger will be outside at that exact time. Track the flight and communicate with the arriving passenger before entering paid pickup parking.
Rental-car pickup and return at ARN
The main Arlanda rental-car area is at P2 Long Term Beta. Unless the rental company tells you otherwise, vehicle collection and return take place at the rental company’s office in that area.
Swedavia’s P2 Beta airport bus links the rental-car area with airport terminal stops. Current rental companies listed by Swedavia include major international brands and local operators, but availability can change.
