Immediate answer

What is the Hong Kong airport code?

The airport code most passengers need is HKG. It identifies Hong Kong International Airport, the major commercial airport at Chek Lap Kok.

The four-letter aviation identifier is VHHH. Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department’s aeronautical information uses VHHH for Hong Kong International Airport; airline booking sites, baggage tags and most passenger-facing searches normally use HKG.

IATA code HKG
ICAO code VHHH
Airport name Hong Kong International Airport
Location Chek Lap Kok
Which code should you type? Use HKG in normal flight-booking, hotel-transfer, baggage and passenger travel tools. Use VHHH only when an aviation system specifically requests the ICAO identifier.

Major 2026 change

Hong Kong Airport Terminal 1 vs Terminal 2

HKIA now uses Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 for passenger departure processing. Terminal 2’s new departure facilities opened on May 27, 2026, and airlines using T2 can check passengers in, accept baggage and process security and immigration there.

The detail that matters most after check-in is that current boarding gates remain in Terminal 1. A passenger who completes departure processing in T2 takes the airside Automated People Mover to the appropriate boarding area in T1.

T1

Terminal 1

T1 remains a major check-in terminal and contains the airport’s current boarding gate areas, including the Midfield and Satellite concourses reached by the appropriate airside connection.

T2

Terminal 2

T2 handles check-in and departure processing for designated airlines. After security and immigration, passengers continue by Automated People Mover to T1 for the boarding gate.

Do not choose a terminal from memory. Check the live HKIA flight page or airline directory before arranging your drop-off. Terminal assignments and check-in arrangements can change.
Departure workflow

How to depart from HKG without getting caught by the T1/T2 change

Start with your airline’s current terminal rather than assuming every departure begins in T1. Keep your valid travel document, booking confirmation or ticket and any required visa documentation ready before check-in.

Confirm your airline and terminal

Use the HKIA departure board or airline directory. This is especially important because some airline check-in services now operate in Terminal 2.

Check in and drop baggage

HKIA offers airline counters plus participating self-service options. Follow the airline’s instructions if a kiosk cannot read your passport or booking.

Pass security screening

Prepare cabin liquids correctly, keep restricted articles out of your baggage and follow instructions at the screening channel.

Complete departure immigration

Eligible passengers may use automated channels. Assisted and Courtesy Channels are available for travellers who qualify for additional assistance.

Go to the correct boarding gate

If you processed through T2, use the airside Automated People Mover to T1. HKIA advises passengers to reach their boarding gate at least 30 minutes before scheduled departure.

Cabin baggage

HKG security: liquids, power banks and smart screening

HKIA’s published liquids, aerosols and gels rule requires each hand-baggage container to be 100 ml or less. The containers must fit in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag with a capacity of 1 litre or less, with one such bag permitted per passenger.

Medication, baby milk or food and special dietary items can have exemptions subject to verification. Airline and destination requirements can also differ, so check your carrier when carrying unusual medical, dietary or duty-free items.

100

100 ml containers

Standard cabin LAG containers must not exceed 100 ml each.

1 L

One-litre bag

Standard liquids must fit comfortably inside the permitted resealable bag.

BAT

Power banks

HKIA states that spare lithium batteries and portable power banks must not be placed in checked baggage.

T2 smart-security detail: HKIA states that passengers using T2’s smart screening channels can keep laptops and bottled liquid under 100 ml inside their carry-on baggage during screening. The underlying 100 ml liquid restriction still applies.
Arriving in Hong Kong

Immigration, baggage and customs after landing at HKG

Visitors should have a valid travel document ready for immigration. Hong Kong’s Immigration Department states that visitors are not required to complete an arrival or departure card for immigration examination.

After immigration, follow the flight-information displays to the assigned baggage carousel. After collecting baggage, proceed through customs; use the red channel when you have goods that require declaration and the green channel when you have nothing to declare.

1

Immigration

Present the required identity or travel document and follow the channel applicable to you.

2

Baggage reclaim

Use the terminal display to confirm the carousel assigned to your arriving flight.

3

Customs

Choose the correct declaration channel before entering the public arrivals area.

City transport

Airport Express from HKG to Hong Kong, Kowloon and Tsing Yi

Airport Express is the quickest rail option between HKIA and central Hong Kong. Under the MTR timetable effective September 13, 2026, the scheduled journey from Airport Station to Hong Kong Station is about 24 minutes.

Airport Express trip Scheduled journey time Planning note
Airport → Hong Kong About 24 minutes Useful for Central and Hong Kong Island connections.

BUS

Public buses

HKIA is served by public bus routes covering many districts. Check the current route that best fits your final destination.

Driving to HKIA

Parking at Hong Kong International Airport

HKIA publishes current space information for its passenger car parks, including Car Parks 1, 3 and 4. Because availability changes continuously, this article does not reproduce a supposedly live vacancy number.

If a long-term parking area is close to full, airport guidance warns that drivers may be diverted to another car park. Build extra time into a departure-day drive rather than planning to arrive at the exact minimum check-in time.

Terminal 2 driver note: Car Park 3 is connected to T2 by a short covered walkway and has more than 1,000 spaces according to Airport Authority Hong Kong’s 2026 T2 information.
Connecting flights

Transferring through Hong Kong International Airport

If you already hold your onward boarding pass, follow the airport’s transfer signs to the departures level and complete transfer security before proceeding to your boarding gate.

If you do not have an onward boarding pass, check your airline’s transfer-desk location and obtain the boarding pass before following the route to departure screening. Do not assume that the gate printed early in your journey will remain unchanged.

Already have onward boarding pass

Follow transfer/departure signs, complete the required security screening and continue to the current boarding gate.

No onward boarding pass

Go to the airline’s designated transfer desk first, obtain your boarding pass and then continue through the required screening route.

Connection warning: HKIA does not provide one universal connection-time recommendation for every itinerary. Separate tickets, baggage re-check, immigration requirements, airline changes and distant gate areas can materially change the time you need.
Passenger assistance

Accessibility and special-needs help at HKG

HKIA provides barrier-free facilities for passengers with reduced mobility and travellers with visual or hearing impairments. The airport’s published facilities include accessible routes, tactile guidance, help phones, wide immigration channels and Courtesy Channels for eligible passengers.
