Chicago O’Hare (ORD): know the code, navigate the airport

A decision-first guide for U.S. and international travelers: verify ORD, find the correct terminal, judge a connection, plan security, compare parking, locate rideshare, use CTA and open official live airport information.

Quick answer: ORD is the IATA code for Chicago O’Hare International Airport. Its ICAO code is KORD, and its FAA location identifier is ORD.

Current operating context

2026–2027 ORD flight limits and construction: what travelers should know

Checked Aug. 7, 2026

O’Hare is operating during a period of high demand, airfield work and terminal redevelopment. These conditions do not predict that an individual flight will be delayed, but they make same-day airline, FAA and airport checks especially important.

2,708

Daily scheduled-operation limit

The FAA’s current order limits ORD to 2,708 scheduled operations per day during designated hours. The FAA announced that the current limits will continue through October 30, 2027.

An “operation” is an arrival or departure. The limit is airport-wide and is not a status for your individual flight.

2027

Why the limit matters

The FAA cites ongoing airspace and operational constraints, gate capacity and construction-related taxiway impacts. Airlines may adjust schedules, aircraft or departure times; the operating airline must handle ticket changes and rebooking.

24/7

Use two different status checks

Use the FAA ORD status for airport-wide traffic programs and the operating airline for your flight, gate, baggage and rebooking. One source cannot replace the other.

1,304

Large nonstop network snapshot

As of July 2026, the airport listed approximately 1,154 daily direct domestic flights and 150 daily direct international flights. Route counts and frequencies change seasonally, so verify a specific destination through the airline.

Traveler action: recheck the itinerary after booking, again 24 hours before departure and before leaving for the airport. A schedule-limit notice does not mean your flight is canceled; only the operating airline can confirm an itinerary change.
Hard-to-find ORD answers

Fast answers travelers usually need at the worst possible moment

Decision-first

These are the details most likely to cause a missed pickup, wrong terminal, failed connection or unnecessary expense. Use the official links in the relevant section for same-day confirmation.

01

Standard rideshare is not at every terminal curb

Official standard app-pickup zones are listed at Terminal 2 upper level, poles 2A–2G, and Terminal 3 upper level, poles 3G, 3H, 3J and 3K. The official Terminal 5 map directs standard rideshare passengers to the ATS and Terminal 2 departures level.

Avoid a pickup mistake
02

Terminal 5 is not only international

Selected domestic flights also use Terminal 5, while some international departures use other terminals. “Domestic” or “international” alone cannot identify your check-in terminal.

Check operating airline
03

TTB does not run around the clock

The secure-side Terminal Transfer Bus runs about every 15 minutes from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Eligible passengers outside those hours use the landside ATS and may need TSA rescreening.

Connection risk
04

International connectors normally collect every checked bag

Unless arriving from a U.S. preclearance airport, passengers clear CBP, claim checked baggage, complete customs and then recheck bags—even when the tag shows the final destination.

Customs sequence
05

The curb is not a waiting area

Drivers should wait free in the Cell Phone Lot at 560 N. Bessie Coleman Drive until the passenger has baggage and provides the terminal and door. Curbside waiting is prohibited.

Pickup readiness
06

Separate tickets change the connection calculation

A separate onward ticket may require bag collection and a new check-in, and the second airline may not protect a missed flight. Build a much larger buffer than a single protected itinerary.

Ticket protection
07

No acceptable ID does not mean automatic entry

Beginning February 1, 2026, TSA may offer fee-based ConfirmID identity verification to some travelers without acceptable identification. It can add time and is not guaranteed to resolve every case.

TSA ID problem
08

MPC can be prepared before landing

Eligible international travelers may prepare a Mobile Passport Control submission up to four hours before landing, then follow current CBP instructions on arrival.

Faster CBP preparation
09

Carry an empty bottle through TSA

Post-security water-refill stations are listed across Terminals 1–3. Empty the bottle before screening, then use the official amenity directory to find the nearest refill point.

Immediate answer

What airport is ORD?

ORD is Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Chicago’s primary international aviation hub. ORD appears on airline bookings, boarding passes, baggage tags, airport transfers, hotel shuttle reservations and flight-status systems.

KORD is the four-letter ICAO identifier used in aviation operations and flight-planning systems. The FAA location identifier is also ORD.

Do not confuse ORD with MDW. MDW is Chicago Midway International Airport, a separate airport. Verify the code before buying parking, reserving a rental car, choosing a hotel shuttle or directing a driver.
Code history

Why is O’Hare’s airport code ORD?

ORD comes from Orchard Field, the earlier name associated with the airport site. Chicago selected Orchard Field for its new airport in 1945. In 1949, the city renamed it Chicago O’Hare International Airport to honor U.S. Navy aviator Edward H. “Butch” O’Hare, while the established ORD identifier remained.

1945

Orchard Field selected

The former aircraft-assembly site was selected for Chicago’s new airport and the Orchard-related identifier became established.

1949

O’Hare name adopted

The airport was renamed to honor Butch O’Hare, but changing the familiar code would have disrupted airline and aviation systems.

Walk, ATS or Terminal Transfer Bus?

Stops and hours verified
1–3

Secure-side walking between Terminals 1, 2 and 3

Connecting passengers can generally walk between the domestic terminals without leaving the secured area. O’Hare is large, so gate-to-gate distance can be much longer than the terminal numbers suggest.

ATS

Airport Transit System

The free automated ATS runs 24 hours a day and normally arrives every 3–5 minutes during peak periods. It connects Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5 with the Multi-Modal Facility for rental cars, Economy Lot F, Kiss ‘n’ Fly, Pace buses and Metra.

Free24/7All terminalsLandside
TTB

Airside Terminal Transfer Bus for eligible connectors

The TTB runs about every 15 minutes from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and is only for connecting passengers with a same-day boarding pass for the destination terminal.

  • Terminal 1 temporary stop: Gate C18B.
  • Terminal 3 stops: Gates G17 and K20.
  • Terminal 5 stop: Gate M13.

Outside service hours—or when not eligible—exit security, take the ATS and pass through TSA screening at the onward terminal.

Construction-sensitive: the Terminal 1 TTB stop moved from Gate B1 to Gate C18B. Temporary routes and stops may move again as O’Hare redevelopment progresses.
International arrivals

Immigration, baggage, customs and onward connections

Most international passengers arriving without U.S. preclearance enter through Terminal 5 and must complete U.S. entry procedures before continuing. Flights from certain preclearance airports can arrive more like domestic flights.

1

Proceed to CBP inspection

Follow the sterile corridor to passport control. Keep passports and required travel documents available.

2

Collect checked baggage

International connecting passengers normally collect checked bags after inspection even when the tag displays the final destination, unless officials or the airline provide a different authorized process.

3

Complete customs

Follow declaration and inspection instructions. Agricultural and food restrictions apply even when the items are legal in the departure country.

4

Recheck baggage

Use the connecting-bag facility when the airline accepts the bag. Separate tickets may require carrying the bag to the onward airline’s public check-in counter.

5

Transfer and clear TSA screening

Use the ATS to reach Terminals 1, 2 or 3 unless an eligible airside transfer applies. All applicable connecting passengers must complete TSA screening again.

MPC

Mobile Passport Control

Eligible travelers can use the free CBP MPC app to prepare document, photo and declaration information up to four hours before landing, then follow the current designated process after arrival.

GE

Global Entry

Approved members can use the current Global Entry process. Conditionally approved applicants may be able to complete Enrollment on Arrival when eligible.

WAIT

Wait-time planning

CBP airport wait-time data does not include baggage delivery, customs, walking, bag recheck, ATS travel or TSA rescreening.

Separate-ticket risk: the onward airline may not protect a missed flight or transfer the bag. Confirm the check-in deadline and leave a much larger connection buffer.
Check-in and screening

ORD security checkpoints and arrival-time planning

Official schedule checked Aug. 6, 2026

A useful baseline is to reach the terminal about two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international departure. This is a planning baseline, not a promise: add time for baggage cutoff, parking, rental return, children, mobility support, holidays, construction and severe weather.

Same-day confirmation is essential: the airport states checkpoint hours can be affected by day-to-day operations. A checkpoint being open does not guarantee your airline’s check-in counter or baggage drop is open.
ID

Identification and ConfirmID

Carry an acceptable physical ID. Starting February 1, 2026, TSA may offer fee-based ConfirmID alternate identity verification to some passengers without acceptable ID; expect additional time and do not treat it as guaranteed boarding.

3-1-1

Liquids and duty-free

Standard carry-on liquid limits apply. International connectors should review the special rules for duty-free liquids in secure tamper-evident bags before TSA rescreening.

CARE

Screening assistance

Contact TSA Cares at 855-787-2227, ideally at least 72 hours before travel. At the checkpoint, ask for a Passenger Support Specialist when needed.

  • Confirm the operating airline and terminal.
  • Check check-in and bag-drop cutoffs.
  • Add garage, shuttle or ATS time.
  • Review battery, medication and liquid rules.
  • Keep ID and boarding pass accessible.
  • Recheck the gate after screening.

CTA, taxi, rideshare, rental cars, regional buses and MDW transfer

CTA

CTA Blue Line to downtown Chicago

The Blue Line operates 24 hours between O’Hare and Chicago. Normal travel to the Loop is approximately 40–45 minutes; planned work or disruption can add time. The O’Hare single-trip fare is generally $5 under current CTA rules.

From Terminals 1–3, follow “CTA Trains” or “Trains to City” signs to the station below the main-garage area. From Terminal 5, the official map directs travelers to use ATS and continue through the pedestrian route to the Blue Line.

24-hour serviceAbout 40–45 minUsually $5 from ORD
TAXI

Licensed taxi and shared-ride option

Official taxi stands are outside baggage claim on the lower level at every terminal. Do not accept an unsolicited ride inside the terminal or on the departure level. The airport publishes an average downtown fare of about $50, subject to traffic and meter charges.

When multiple parties are available, the airport also publishes shared-ride fares of $24 per person to downtown, $24 to McCormick Place and $37 to Midway. Availability is not guaranteed.

APP

Uber, Lyft and standard app pickup

Official standard rideshare zones are on the upper departures level at Terminal 2, orange poles 2A–2G, and Terminal 3, green poles 3G, 3H, 3J and 3K. Terminal 2 has an indoor waiting area between vestibules 2A and 2D.

The official Terminal 5 map directs standard rideshare passengers to take ATS to Terminal 2. From other terminals, follow the live app and airport signs because routing can change. Request only after baggage collection and arrival at the correct pickup zone.

WAV pickup differs: accessible rideshare services can use lower-level terminal locations and Kiss ‘n’ Fly. Select UberWAV or the Lyft accessibility mode and follow the app’s exact zone.
LIMO

Prearranged limousine or black car

Call the provider after collecting baggage. The service should provide a license plate, vehicle description and meeting door. Official guidance places livery pickup in designated lower-level commercial lanes; a vehicle may take roughly 5–20 minutes to reach the pickup point after the call.

CAR

Rental cars at the Multi-Modal Facility

All on-airport rental-car operations are centralized at the MMF, 10255 W. Zemke Blvd. Take the free 24-hour ATS from any terminal. Verify fuel, toll, return and after-hours rules directly with the rental company.

BUS

Pace, Metra and regional buses

Pace uses MMF bus bays 8 and 9; Routes 250 and 330 serve the facility. The Metra O’Hare Transfer station is behind the MMF and North Central Service is much less frequent than the CTA. Regional coach pickup is provider-specific, so confirm the MMF bay and departure time.

HTL

Hotel and off-airport parking shuttles

Official guidance states that hotel and off-airport parking shuttle pickups have moved to the Terminal 2 Arrivals curbside. Some providers may continue Terminal 5 pickup. Confirm the exact terminal, door and operating hours directly with the hotel or parking company before leaving baggage claim.

Primary pickup: T2 ArrivalsProvider confirmation required
ORD to Midway (MDW): there is no airside airport transfer. Official guidance says CTA travel can take up to two hours: Blue Line to Clark/Lake, then a free transfer to the Orange Line. Add airline check-in and security time at MDW on top of the ground trip.

Airside stayDo not assume an overnight boarding pass guarantees that you can remain beyond security.
HotelThe Hilton is physically connected to Terminals 1–3; nearby hotels may use shuttle arrangements.
CancellationAsk the operating airline about meal, hotel and rebooking eligibility before paying.
Separate ticketProtect time for new check-in, bag drop and security the next morning.
Late-night reality: the airport stays operational, but a terminal being open does not mean the airline counter, lounge, restaurant or preferred checkpoint is open. Confirm each service separately.

Passenger questions

Frequently asked questions about ORD

What airport is ORD?
ORD is the IATA airport code for Chicago O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois.
What does ORD stand for?
ORD comes from Orchard Field, the earlier name associated with the airport site before it was renamed for Butch O’Hare.
What is O’Hare’s ICAO code?
The ICAO code is KORD. The IATA code and FAA location identifier are ORD.
Is ORD the same airport as MDW?
No. ORD is Chicago O’Hare. MDW is Chicago Midway, a separate airport with different roads, parking and CTA service.
How many passenger terminals does ORD have?
O’Hare has four numbered passenger terminals: 1, 2, 3 and 5. There is no active passenger Terminal 4.
Which terminal is international at O’Hare?
Terminal 5 is the primary international-arrivals terminal, but it also handles selected domestic flights and some international departures can use another terminal. Confirm with the operating airline.
Can I walk between O’Hare terminals?
Passengers can generally walk on the secured side between Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Travel involving Terminal 5 may require the airside TTB or landside ATS.
Does the ATS run all night?
Yes. The free Airport Transit System runs 24 hours and connects all passenger terminals with the Multi-Modal Facility.
What are the Terminal Transfer Bus hours?
The TTB is currently published as running about every 15 minutes from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. for eligible same-day connecting passengers.
How long is the Blue Line from ORD to downtown?
Normal travel is approximately 40–45 minutes. Check CTA alerts because planned work and disruptions can increase the journey.
How much is the Blue Line from O’Hare?
CTA lists a $5 O’Hare single-trip fare. Check current fare rules and ticket options before travel.
How early should I arrive at ORD?
A practical baseline is about two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international flight, subject to airline instructions and trip conditions.
What is the cheapest official O’Hare parking?
Economy Lots G and H were listed at $16 per 24 hours when checked on August 7, 2026. Confirm live availability and rates before driving.
Where should I wait when picking up a passenger?
Use the free Cell Phone Lot at 560 N. Bessie Coleman Drive until the passenger has baggage and is ready at the arrivals curb.
Where are Uber and Lyft pickups?
Standard rideshare pickup zones are currently on the upper departures level at Terminal 2, poles 2A–2G, and Terminal 3, poles 3G, 3H, 3J and 3K. Follow the app and official signs because zones can change.
Is there a hotel connected to ORD?
The Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport is directly across from Terminals 1, 2 and 3 through underground walkways. Terminal 5 passengers can use the ATS.
Where do I get Uber or Lyft after arriving at Terminal 5?
The official Terminal 5 map directs standard rideshare passengers to take the ATS to the Terminal 2 departures-level pickup area. Follow the app and airport signs because routing can change. Accessible WAV pickup follows different lower-level instructions.
Can I stay airside at O’Hare overnight?
Do not assume an overnight boarding pass guarantees airside access. Checkpoints and airline counters have different hours, and security operations can require passengers to remain landside or re-enter later. Terminal 5 CP10 is the only checkpoint currently listed as open 24 hours.
Do I collect checked baggage during an international connection at ORD?
Most passengers arriving without U.S. preclearance must collect all checked baggage after immigration, complete customs, recheck bags and pass TSA screening for the onward flight, even when the baggage tag shows the final destination.
Where is the Companion Plus Restroom at ORD?
It is in Terminal 2 across from the Family Lounge. It includes an adult-size changing table, powered ceiling lift, accessible showers, emergency pull cords and caregiver space.
Where can I obtain a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard?
Sunflower items are available at airport information desks in each terminal and at the Multi-Modal Facility. Locations and staffed hours are listed in the accessibility section of this guide and should be confirmed on the official accessibility page.
What happens if I arrive at TSA without acceptable ID?
Starting February 1, 2026, TSA may offer fee-based ConfirmID alternate identity verification to some travelers without acceptable identification. It can require extra time and does not guarantee that every traveler can be verified or board.
Can I prepare Mobile Passport Control before landing at ORD?
Eligible travelers can prepare an MPC submission up to four hours before landing, then follow current CBP instructions after arrival. The app does not replace inspection by a CBP officer.
Does O’Hare have water-bottle refill stations?
Yes. Official post-security refill stations are listed throughout Terminals 1, 2 and 3. Carry an empty bottle through TSA and use the official amenity directory or indoor map to locate the nearest station.
Can Travelers Aid store my luggage at ORD?
No. Travelers Aid states that it cannot assist with or store luggage. Do not leave bags unattended; ask the airline or connected hotel whether a lawful option is available for your itinerary.
Are FAA flight limits currently in effect at O’Hare?
Yes. The FAA currently limits ORD to 2,708 scheduled operations per day during designated hours and has announced that the current limits will continue through October 30, 2027. This airport-wide rule does not by itself show whether a specific flight is delayed or canceled; check the operating airline.
Where do hotel shuttles pick up at O’Hare?
Official guidance states that hotel and off-airport parking shuttle pickups have moved to the Terminal 2 Arrivals curbside. Some providers may still serve Terminal 5, so confirm the terminal, door and hours directly with the shuttle provider.
